    1. [AYR] McKINNA/McKENZIE from 1854
    2. Goldstraw
    3. Hi all, I am trying to find information regarding my ancestral family. I have a death certificate of a James McKenzie born at sea, a widower died 1907, buried at Boroondara Cemetery Melbourne, Victoria. No further information is on the certificate. Also Jane born Dunkeld in 1858 Victoria. I have no information after 1869 when she was 11 yrs old and was signatory to the birth of her brother William. Parents were Ann CAMPBELL and John (either McKinna or McKenzie) at some point the surname changed to McKenzie but when they married in Scotland it was McKinna. The children were James (born at sea abt 1853/54) George b Dunkeld 1856 Victoria ( my great grandfather), Jane 1858, John b ?, William b 1869 Brunswick, Victoria John's parents were Elizabeth and William McKinna living Sorn Ayrshire, Scotland. I think they lived at Ford Street, Catrine. Any help gratefully appreciated. Cheers Chris

    3. Hi Kerry the Free Church of Scotland didnt come into being until around May 1843 and as they had to start from scratch with buildings etc it may have been a while before they had records. Have you tried the Free Church of Scotland itself, they have a website, just put Free Church Scotland in Google. This information came from the book" In Search of Scottish Ancestry " by Gerald Hamilton-Edwards I have ancestors in Kilmarnock around the same time and they were a bit remiss in getting the children baptised, they were all entered in the register together which was handy but not in the place I would expect them to be. Hope this helps Margaret NZ ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kerrie" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, April 14, 2013 11:55 AM Subject: [AYR] Free Church of Ireland Registers My great grandfather Hugh PARKER was born in 1842 in Kilmarnock but he does not appear in the Church of Scotland baptismal register for Kilmarnock. I had a pretty good idea that the family were adherents of the Free Church of Scotland so I recently wrote to the National Records of Scotland enquiring about some Free Church of Scotland records for Kilmarnock that I had found on their catalogue. Although the records I found start too late for me I thought that it may interest folk on this list to know that there are other church records existing where their missing families may be found. I don't believe these registers have been filmed by the LDS or are available on ScotlandsPeople. For your information I have cut and pasted some of the reply I received from the NRS. There was more in the email regarding copyright and ordering and if anyone would like a copy of the full email from NRS I'd be happy to send it. Regards Kerrie Australia Dear Mrs Alexander I have located the reference numbers CH3/1003 and CH3/1021 that you provided us with in our catalogue. CH3/1003 unfortunately holds no baptismal records in this collection. The catalogue reference CH3/1021 for Kilmarnock, St Andrew's Free Church, holds the following survivng records: Baptismal register 1844-53 Baptismal register 1869-1916 Baptismal register 1852-61 If you visit our historical search room directly you can view these records on our virtual volumes catalogue under the reference CH3/1021/7. CH3/1021/12 relates to Baptismal registers 1919-1984 for the Free Church of Scotland in Kilmarnock. These are stored outside of our building so if you do wish to come in to view them, please allow us 24 hours notice via telephone, or 48 hours advance order via email at [email protected] If you cannot visit us in person we can provide a copy service. Standard charges for copies of documents (paper or digital) are 50 pence per page. There is a minimum charge of £2.50 per reference number, so this covers the first 5 pages then additional pages are charged at 50 pence per page. We are able to supply digital copies of documents saved to compact disc, but cannot send digital images by email attachment. Please note that there are restrictions on supplying digital images of some documents (these are mostly Gift and Deposit documents). Once you have emailed us with the reference numbers of which you would like copies we will confirm if digital copies can be supplied. Paper copies may be offered instead. Postage and packing costs will depend on the size of your order. Standard costs for delivery within the UK are £2.00 per 50 pages. If all your copies are saved to one compact disc this is the amount you will be charged. Full details of our revised scale of fees and charges can be downloaded from our website at: http://www.nas.gov.uk/searchRooms/copyingServices.asp Before preparing an estimate for copies, we require a non-refundable search and estimate fee of £15. 1. [AYR] Entry in 1841 census help please
    2. Kerrie
    3. Hi I have found what I think could be my ancestor's entry in the 1841 census for Galston. He is Robert Reid (Ancestry, com have him indexed as Reed) aged 70, lived at Strath Mill and his occupation is "Paperm J". I have obtained a copy of the original entry from Scotlandspeople in the hope that the occupation may have been clearer but it is just "Paperm J". Could this be Papermaker Journeyman? My Robert was a papermaker and it would be great if I could get help to interpret this entry correctly. Many thanks Kerrie

    2. Mike Boyd
    3. You may find that Mrs/Miss Young died will giving birth and as the Stevens lived nearby, next door or were friends, they "took" in the new baby. So you may need to also look for any Young's in or around Galston. I have one branch of my family where this happened and even today they still call themselves Boyd and many of the daughters have called sons Boyd as a first name. Mike Boyd Brisbane -----Original Message----- From: Jo Ann Croft Sent: Thursday, April 11, 2013 12:04 AM To: Ayrshire List Subject: Re: [AYR] Marion Kay Young Stevens familysearch.org only has births indexed up to about 1872 in most areas of Scotland. They did most of their original indexing in the 1950s and the laws in various countries relating to the age of records that could be made public restrict what you can view online. I have found her on scotlandspeople. She was born in 1881 as Marion Kay Young in Galston, Ayrshire. Stevens was not her birth surname. There was no official adoption procedures or records in Scotland until the 20th century, so if her father is not named on the record you will be at a dead end. Just do a search on scotlandspeople for Marion Young, b 1881 in Galston. You will be able to purchase and view/download the birth registration image immediately.
