Author: asutherland74 Surnames: Fenwick and Orange Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.ayr.general/14373/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Looking for information about William and Sarah Fenwick, birthdates, parents, siblings etc. William was born ca 1849 in Morpeth, Northumberland, he was a gardener. Together with Sarah, he had a daughter called Hannah Orange Fenwick (unsure where the Orange name comes from), born in 1872. In the Census of 1881, William was a widower, so Sarah died sometime between 1872 and 1881. I do not know anything more about Sarah. I have found William and Hannah in the 1891 Census also, but have not found him after that. Any help is greatly appreciated. 1. Re: [AYR] Boyd ancestry controversy - John Boyd Maltster Irvine, Ayrshire early 1700's
    2. Mike Boyd
    3. Robert I will reply to this by coping it to both the Boyd and Ayrshire net lists. This document CLEARLY PROVES that this John Boyd born in 1738 is not the son of James Boyd who became the 15th Earl of Erroll. While I have been to the North Ayrshire Local Studies library several times, I have never tried to look for any "occupations" such as Maltster's. So I am not sure if any such records might exist that could help find this John Boyd. I do not think that I copied any Burgess list for Irvine that I could look at. So it maybe worth asking the Local Studies Library if there are any Malster Burgess before 1738. I do list of Boyds in the Parish of Irvine who are on the 1691 Hearth Tax List. Parish of Irvine List within Town and parish of Irvine James Boyd (1) Robert Boyd (1) John Boyd (3) Thomas Boyd (4) Hugh Boyd (1) Lady Montfode (2) [what surname? - see ch 8/4??] Janet Boyd (2) Baillie Boyd (6) [what first name - need to check Irvine town history or lists of Bailles] James Boyd (5) - East side of the Towne Barbara Boyd (1) Josias Boyd (2) Thomas Boyd, merchant (3) Margaret Boyd (1) - Stonslands Hellen Boyd (1) The entries with more than one hearth could be the father of this John Boyd who married Janet Dunlop and had a son John Boyd in 1738. That gives you 7 families to pick from. I will add your note to Chapter 5/262. Oh from the booklet written by Edger Boyd in 1913, it said that John Boyd, the son, came to America with his mother, so it may be interesting to see if her death can be found - along with any newspaper article about her death. Are there any Boyd researchers looking into this family. Or are there any Dunlop researchers that may be bale to tell us more about John Boyd, the father's family. Thank you Mike Boyd Historical Committee, HBS -----Original Message----- From: Robert Boyd Sent: Saturday, May 18, 2013 1:16 AM To: [email protected] Cc: [email protected] Subject: Boyd ancestry controversy Hi Mike: My son Andy has located some documents related to the John Boyd born in Scotland in 1738. This is probably old stuff to you. Andy got some papers from the collection of William Hart Boyd on Monroe, Michigan, a son of William Augustus Boyd and grandson of John Boyd. The papers are held in the Bentley Historical Library at the University of Michigan. They include a copy of John Boyd's certification as a "Notary Publick" dated June 24, 1761, in Edinburgh. According to this document, John Boyd was a "Writer" (meaning lawyer) and the "Son Lawfull of John Boyd Maltster" (meaning brewer) in Irvine. The younger John Boyd emigrated to America and died in Philadelphia in the Yellow Fever epidemic of 1798, according to probate papers from Philadelphia. This bit of history casts more doubt on the Kilmarnock ancestry. I doubt a son of a Laird would be a brewer (unless, or course, he was illegitimate or a scalawag cast out by his father). Cheers, Robert Boyd [email protected]

    3. Hello List, Please does anyone know anything about Dunbar Cottage(s) in Mauchline Road, Auchinleck? Members of my Dunbar family were living there in 1851 and I was told that it had been built by someone in the family - but I'd love to know when and by whom. I don't even know how old the cottage is. It appears now to be two cottages but I don't know whether it originated as a single dwelling. I'd be delighted with any information. Best regards, Mary

    1. [AYR] Fw: [BOYD] Lynn Boyd of KY
    2. Mike Boyd
    3. Can any of the Ayrshire list tell me who this Abraham Boyd is a blood relative of Poet Robert Burns? Even though it is mid morning, I must be still half a sleep, as I have just noticed that his mother was a Burns. So the question still stands and I will be able to do an article that this part of Clan Boyd might have a “good turn of phrase”. This Boyd family appears to have come from Ireland – most likely Ulster – and his grandfather is said to be born about 1700 which would mean that Martha Burns and Robert Burns might be cousins or Aunty and nephew or even a more distant relative. Thank you Mike Boyd Historical committee, HBS From: Lauren Boyd McLachlan Sent: Tuesday, April 30, 2013 9:47 PM To: Mike Boyd Subject: Re: [BOYD] Lynn Boyd of KY Abraham Boyd (b. 01 Oct 1765, d. 01 Apr 1839) Abraham Boyd (son of James Boyd and Martha Burns)10 was born 01 Oct 1765 in Bedford Co., VA, and died 01 Apr 1839 in Canton, Trigg Co., KY11. He married Nancy Agnes Linn on 01 Apr 1794 in Nashville, Davidson, TN, daughter of Adam Linn and Sidney Ann Ewing. Notes for Abraham Boyd: >From Boyd Trees ABRAHAM (or Abram) BOYD married Nancy/Agnes Linn/Lynn and had five sons and one daughter that lived to be grown: John, Martha, Lynn, Alfred and Rufus, and Putnam. Rufus died when about twenty-two years of age. The others all lived to be from fifty-nine to seventy-five years of age. The sons, like the father, were all over six feet in height, broad shouldered, well made, strong, blond and handsome, every one. (Source: Kris Oleson, P.O. Box 1113, Monroe, WA 98272) Abraham moved from NC to Nashville, TN. In 1800, he settled in Trigg County, KY, at what is now Canton. John Boyd, the eldest son went to Texas while it was still a Mexican province and was several times elected to the lower House of Congress in the Republic of Texas before it was annexed to the United States. He fought in the war for Mexican Independence. Linn Boyd served sixteen consecutive years in the lower House of Congress from the 1st Congressional District in Kentucky, the last four of which he was speaker of the house. Alfred Boyd served in the legislature of Kentucky one or two terms, and also was a member of the state convention to amend or frame a new constitution. (THE UNITED STATES BIOGRAPHICAL DICTIONARY on William A. Gordon, M.D.) Abraham Boyd, of Scotch descent, came from North Carolina and settled on the banks of the Cumberland River in West Kentucky, in 1785. His wife Nancy Agnes Lynn was of Irish extraction. Her mother was a Mill Ewing who ran away and married against her parents wishes to an Irishman named Lynn. The Ewings were a fine family, from which have sprung many distinguished men. They settled in Tennessee and Ohio. ABRAHAM/ABRAM had Boyd's Landing on the Cumberland River in Kentucky, and donated the land for the town of Canton, Trigg County, KY, and was original settler of Canton. He also served as Magistrate on 15 May, 1820, in the Kentucky Court of Appeals. "The settlement of CANTON Precinct dates back prior to the dawning of the present Century, though at what year the first pioneers made their appearance is a matter of mere conjecture. Traces of rude log cabins were found in many places along the Cumberland River when the first permanent settlers came, and the belief is current that families of trappers and adventurers made this a rendezvous many years before any effort was made to open up and improve the country. 'As early as 1799, a party of emigrants called a halt on the river at a point where now is situated the town of Canton, who were destined to leave a record in the public archives of this Commonwealth that has been and will continue to be read from the beginning to the ending of the present Century. We allude to the family of ABRAHAM BOYD -- he was a native of North Carolina but had been a resident of Tennessee in the neighborhood of Nashville for a number of years, and removed thence to the point above stated. The trip must have been made in flat-boats, for there were no roads, and an old settler remarked that he assisted them in cutting a road through and it took several days to complete it. He erected his first dwelling on the ground where the present church stands. His father-in-law, ADAM LINN, accompanied him and made a settlement three miles out from the river on the Luster place. He (ABRAHAM) was a native of Scotland, and a blood relation to the Poet Robert Burns. Abrham Boyd was a man of remarkably fine intellect, and for that day a man of considerable culture. He represented the people a number of times in the Legislature when this was a portion of Christian County and afterward when Trigg was formed into a distinct division. He has been represented as the superior of his afterward distinguished son, HONORABLE LINN BOYD, upon the stump, was a man of very thorough business training, and the presiding Justice of the County Court in the organization and formation of the County . . . . . Abraham Boyd fought in the Revolutionary War; crossed the mountains into Tennessee with Andrew Jackson. He died April 1839 (no stone) and is buried in Atwood Cemetery, Trigg Co., KY, with his wife Nancy Agnes (Linn) Boyd where there is no stone. Abraham and Nancy Linn had marriage license issued but not returned April 1, 1794. Would any list members might know of this “Mr Boyd” and where he may be living today? Thank you. Mike Boyd Historical Committee, HBS From: Carolyn Vosburg Sent: Wednesday, May 08, 2013 5:11 PM To: Mike Boyd Cc: [email protected] Subject: Re: [BOYD] George Boyd of Compass, PA You wrote: It is known that George Boyd of Compass, PA died in 1731 and was buried at St. John's Episcopal Churchyard, Compass, Lancaster Co., PA. It is said that he was a founder of this Church when it was founded in 1729. So HOW DO members of this family know that he was born in 1691? Where does that information come from? It is commonly said that he came from County Antrim, while some say that he was born in Airth, Stirlingshire. So his place of birth is still uncertain. One ISSUE that has always puzzled me is that why would an Episcopalian or Church of Ireland member want to leave Ireland in the 1720’s when they were the official Church of Ireland – and as far as I understand did not face the same religious troubles as the Presbyterians and Catholics. I can understand the movement from Scotland in 1700-1710, or even earlier, because his family were Episcopalian as they were being persecuted in Scotland. Thank you Mike Boyd Historical Committee, hBS And I sent: rootsweb.com http://virts.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~kmparker/gen/Surname%20Reports/boyd.htm BOYD I am indebted to Walter Boyd for sharing his experience in Ayrshire, where he met another Mr. Boyd, who was an employee of the company Walter was visiting. This gentleman had done considerable research on the Boyds in the area and was convinced that our George Boyd was the same one who was christened in Airth Parish in Sterling, Scotland, on May 31, 1691, the son of George Boyd and Elizabeth Johnston, and turned up later in County Antrim, Ireland. Walter believes that the family, along with numerous cousins, probably moved to County Antrim, Ireland, before 1700. Thereafter the economic conditions in northern Ireland became so bad that it seems unlikely they would have moved there after that time. Walter thinks George's wife Isabella Boyd was probably a cousin. They last appeared in the County Antrim records in 1723. Then, you sent: Carolyn thank you for finding this information. Unfortunately, it does not tell us who Walter Boyd is or who the “Mr Boyd of Ayrshire” is. I would certainly like to know, as I will put him on my list of people to see when I go to Ayrshire next year. Nor could I see any contact details for this family tree on who wrote the artilce/tree, which I have copied. MY GUESS is that a date of “May 31, 1691”, this would suggest that the entry has come from the Old Parish Register. So is anyone able to search those records to see if they can find this entry. I can’t think of any sources in County Antrim, that might tell us if George Boyd and Elizabeth Johnston went to live in Antrim and where? This will be necessary to “prove” the link between the George Boyd of compass, PA and born in Airth, Stirlingshire in 1691. Thank you Mike Boyd Mike, The person who posted this family tree on rootsweb is a K.M. Parker. I don't know what the K.M. stands for or if this is a man or a woman! But, here is the email address if you'd like to try to contact them directly about your questions and concerns! [email protected] Best wishes, Carolyn

Ref to this thread: McKELVIE,MUIR http://boards.ancestry.com/localities.britisles.scotland.ayr.general/13348.2/mb.ashx 2nd post refs the 1841 census for Riccarton, and in the household there is "Margaret Cowan female 1 b Ayrshire" I also believe it would be a good bet the father of John McKelvie (m. Agnes Muir McKelvie) would likely have been named "Francis." - He's married to this Cowan/Cowsa. In turn, I'm thinking, this Francis' father and mother may have been the John & Janet (Buntine) McKelvie's of Dundonald, Scotland. And in step with the 1st born son named after every other generation, my grandfather (J.Ward MacKelvie b. 1890, youngest of 5) - his oldest brother is John Robert McKelvie. So, looking at 1st sons born going backwards: John Robert McKelvie b.1876-1948 Francis McKelvie b. Ayr ~ 1840-1891 John (& Agnes) McKelvie b. Riccarton 1807-? (possible) Francis (& ? Cowan/Cowsa) McKelvie b. Dundonald 1779 (possible) John (Janet Buntine) McKelvie of Dundonald(?), Scotland. I still can't figure out if Thomas (Janet Muir) and John (Agnes Muir) were brothers though. I suspect there may have been more children of the John (Janet Buntine) McKelvie's and they maybe were cousins instead.
