    2. There is a Titwood in the eastern end of Dreghorn, close by both Stewarton and Kilmaurs. The poet Burns's uncle, also Robert Burns, worked there at one point. 3. None of the four names is rare and two (or more) couples with matching names is not unlikely. I would start by ordering the children by Date of Birth and looking for approximately 2 year intervals. If that happens to also match some by Place of Birth, you are probably off to a good start. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of [email protected] Sent: Friday, May 31, 2013 11:02 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [AYR] Need help with my "White" or "Whyte" family line This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: hughgemmell Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.ayr.general/14378.2.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Peter: The link is http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk. It is the official website of the Registrar-General for Scotland where you find all registrations of births, marriages and deaths in Scotland since 1855, plus all censuses up to 1911, and other records. You must register, receive a password, and there is a modest charge for each record you access. You buy 30 credits via a credit card for 7 pounds sterling (British currency) and they will explain the rest. I highly recommend it for you as it will give you actual copies of the records you seek on your computer which you can look at and copy off if you wish. In your case you can also look at the birth record of Thomas Mair Paton in Stair, Ayrshire for 1901, the record of his marriage to Helen Fergusson (note the double "ss" spelling of her name) in Tarbolton, Ayrshire, in 1932, and the birth records of their children in Tarbolton: Andrew Paton b 1934 Tarbolton, Ayr Alexander Paton b 1935 Tarbolton, Ayr Mair Paton b 1936 Tarbolton, Ayr Agnes Alexandra Paton b 1940 Tarbolton, Ayr One thing I should warn you about is that the website demands accuracy in spelling in order for you to access the records. They give you options such as "surname variants", etc. which help, but if you put in a wrong spelling, you won't get the record! Good Luck! (There don't really seem to have been any other Eccles but yours in Ballantrae. It is possible William is related in some way.) The Banns for William Eccles and Janet Millar, Ballantrae, are dated 25th September 1838. The 1841 Census shows Janet Eccles, 20, at Shellknoll, Ballantrae, described as "husband fisher absent". She has two children aged Mary, 1, and James, 8 months. A search through the baptism pre-1855 shows Mary had a middle name of Taylor and they had another son John Millar Eccles baptised Dec 1842. This post says William died in 1844: http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.eccles/11.14.15.85.3.1/mb.ashx In the 1851 Census they turn up at Main Street (Girvan Rd), Ballantrae.
