We visited her in St. Boniface on many an occasion when travelling back east to visit relatives. My Mother's name was Helen Marie McKenzie (nee Nicholson) Her grandfather was Alexandre "Buffalo" Ayotte. Information on her mother has been hard to track. Her mothers name has been seen as Melvina, Aurise, Orise etc. She and Caroline would have been sisters with the last family name of Ayotte. Do you have any family history from your mom's side?
