Hi Jackie, New France is a very misleading term. From at least 1534 onwards various areas of North America were explored and claimed to be French territories. Just before the Treaty of Paris in 1763 in which most of the territories owned by the French were ceded to Britain, New France extended from close to the Hudson Bay area (which earlier the French had claimed as theirs) in the north to Louisiana in the south (at one time the French had occupied Florida before the Spanish killed them or chased them out). From the Rockies and the Rio Grande River in the west to Ohio and parts of Maine in east. Also from 1534 on the parts of the French claim north of New England were called Canada. It was so named on maps drawn after Cartier's 1534 trip. Thus it is better to find out in which jurisdiction your ancestor lived or settled rather than to worry about where New France was located. It was located in different places according to different people at various times. Thomas Hayot (also spelled Ayot, Ayotte, Ayet, Ayette, and Marticot, Marticotte among other variations) arrived in North America in 1638 with his wife Jeanne Boucher and three children. On Oct. 30, 1638 his son Adrien was baptised. According to Jette, wife Jeanne was pregnant with this child on arrival. They left from Soligny-la-Trappe, Perche, France. Thomas was 58 years old on the 1667 at Cap-Rouge (in what is now Quebec). The marriage date for Thomas and Jeanne was 15-07-1629 in Mortagne, Perche, France. My children descend from son of Thomas and Jeanne: Jean and Louise Pelletier; then through their son Jean and Anne-Xainte Grondin; then Jean-Francois and Marie-Josephte Rousseau; then Etienne (whose surname is most often found as Ayet, Ayette or Marticotte) and Anne-Francoise Renaud, Dite Daguet; then Etienne and Marie-Genevieve Bonneau, Dite Labecasse; then Etienne and Luce Talon, Dite Lesperance. Finally in 1843 Adelaide, the daughter of Etienne and Luce, married Joseph Stanford from London, England. Although the various generations of the family had spent most of their time in the Quebec jurisdiction, for some reason Joseph and Adele (as she was known) married in Montreal, though Adele's mother and siblings continued to reside in Quebec city or area. Etienne, the father, had been a voyaguer, while his sons were shoemakers or barge "pilots". Adele and Joseph had 11 children - 9 girls and the last two twin boys. One was stillborn and the other survived to carry on the Stanford name with the Hayot genes! On the marriage record, Adelaide was recorded as Adelaide, daughter of Etienne Marticot dit Ayette, which was transcribed as Alliette by the indexer. Luce was often shown as Talon, Talon-L'Esperance or L'Esperance. Hope this helps. a bientot, Xenia Stanford ([email protected]) A.G.E. I have to believe that since there is apperently well documented parish records saying that he married a woman named Suzanne which was recorded as "une femme Keitse nommee Suzanne" 4 years before he was suppose to have married Louisa Agnes Billum, that Louisa must be a second wife. Of interest is the fact that the son whom started my persuit of Firman's ancestry was apperantly named after Narcisse Falardeau, one of the witnesses to Firman's first marriage to Suzanne. - The sons name, spelled different every where you find it ranges in spelling somewhere between Nubcies and Nurceis, which if you can't read or right in the first place is plenty close to Narcisse. This has to be the same Firman, even with the inconsistancies. Jackie

I came across his name one day while I was searching our the archives for the Hudsons Bay Company, which was a company set up to deal in the fur trade in Canada. Fermin was an employee of this company, and they note that on July 1, 1856, he married a Katzie woman named Suzanne. This marriage took place at Fort Langley, (a fur trading post set up by the Hudsons Bay company) in British Columbia. It also notes that his parents are Joseph Ayotte and Pelagie Villemure (dit Lefebvre). Another cousin provided me with Fermin's date of birth as November 9, 1828. He was born in the town of St Stanislas, Quebec, Canada. If you wish to view the site which provides the info on Fermin with regards to his being an employee of the Hudsons Bay Company, the site is www.fortlangley.ca. Scroll down until you come to the heading about the men who worked there, and click on "108" which is the number of employees. All are listed alphabetically. This source also provides his date of death as January 31, 1915, at 87 years of age, and he died in South Westminster, British Columbia. There are several discrepancies in dates and places with your information and mine, however, I think we are dealing with the same Fermin Ayotte. I have not had the opportunity to researc! h any of his and Suzanne's children, though there are several Ayottes that live in British Columbia. I am just not sure if they are his descendants. It is possible Louise Billum could be his second wife, however, it appears she could be one and the same as Suzanne, given that their first child was born, according to your info in 1857, a little more than a year after their marriage. You have Fermin's marriage to Louise as 1860? It appears they had two children in British Columbia, and by 1865 were living in Washington, where they had more children. With regards to the posting Michel sent you with regards to our Ancestor Thomas Hayot and New France - New France refers to the term given to Quebec by the French when they settled the area. Thomas Hayot married his wife Jeanne in Perche, France in 1629 and was one of the first colonists in Quebec. He had three sons, but all the Ayotte descendants are from two, Jean and Adrien. Fermin Ayotte is the descendant of Thomas's son Jean and his wife Louise Pelletier. Regards, Kim Desroches

Jean emigrated to New France (also called Canada-East, now called Quebec) with his family before the birth of his brother Adrien in 1638 and on 17 Nov 1653 at Quebec City he married Louise PELLETIER. Jean had the following sons who married and carried on the surname: Jean Baptiste (1661-09-03-1714-10-20) m. Sainte GRONDIN (6 sons who married) Etienne (1673-02-04- 1758-07-23) m. They had only one son who survived to marry and carry on the name: Louis (b. 1671-04-23) m. Marie Louise GOUREAU dit LAGAILLARDISE on 1693-11-22 somewhere in QC. Louis also had only one son to carry on the name, Jean Baptiste (1698-12-08-1749-03-11) who married Marie Angelique GENEST dit LABARRE on 1726-07-29 at St-Antoine-de-Tilly. jean Baptiste had three sons who carried on the name. So, chances are if you are of the AYOTTE (and other spellings) lineage, you are most likely to come from Jean, and more rarely to come from Adrien. Source: PRDH (U. of Montreal) Regards, Sharyn
