    3. Hi! We have a web site see web address in posting below, and a live and well family association headed by Stephanie Lantiere at sglantiere@aol.com , our President. Sharing this with her and others through "Bcc:",. The Avery's are on the move newsletters, archaeological excavations at the original ancestral home, work on the Avery-Morgan Cemetery to name some activities. 1. [AVERY] Avery Reunion and Other Reunions In 2008
    2. Scott Bill Hirst
    3. To Avery and New London County,Connecticut; and Geer Discussion Groups: The Avery Memorial Association is on the move! It makes me proud to have Avery roots! Unfortunately the day of the Avery reunion this year, the Crandall reunion http://www.cfa.net is the same day and I will be at that one because I am a board member. These reunions are the Third Saturday of July, Avery in Mashantucket (Ledyard), Connecticut; and Crandall in Ashaway,Rhode Island. Below I composed for use or possible an upcoming Crandall Family Association Newsletter there may be minor changes in this but I think it has have not been changed for my final version for the Crandall newsletter. Please do not publish this as I like to update my work. I want only in Crandall newsletter if published in a newsletter as presently done. Sharing with my genealogy list in "Bcc:", as well as other sources. BTW, Last year I attended all or in part of Mowry,Woodworth,Geer,Avery, Denison, and Palmer reunions. Relatively yours, Scott 2008 Reunions By Scott Bill Hirst 2008 is a chance to attend reunions right around the time of the Crandall reunion and some at other times. The Avery, Fairbanks, and Goodenow Reunions are set the same time. The Avery reunion will be on the same day as ours but other activities during that period you can meet up with them. That one will be at the museum at Mashantucket, Connecticut; near Foxwoods Casino. Check out the Avery Memorial Association web site at http://www.averymemorialassociation.com/ ,. The Fairbanks reunion will be at the Fairbanks Homestead, the oldest surviving timber frame house in North America; unfortunately the same day as ours. It is in Dedham,Massachusetts. Check out http://www.fairbankshouse.org/ ,. The Goodenows will be a multi-day reunion in Sudbury,Massachusetts. Crandall's who have Pendleton ancestry would with virtual certainty have Goodenow ancestry. Check out http://www.goodenowfamily.org ,.They have an Early Bird start on July 14TH; with the regular reunion from July 16TH to July 20TH,. Other reunions to be aware of coming up this year besides Crandall include Alden, Denison, Palmer, Warren, Palmer, Eddy, and Stanton. A large reunion for descendants of early family of Stonington, Connecticut; is planned for 2009. All reunions I mentioned so far are either in Connecticut or Massachusetts with the exception of Crandall. I am not a Gallup descendant but they usually have a reunion. A Woodworth reunion will also be held in California in June,2008. A Chapman reunion will be held in Nashville, Tennessee; from June 13TH to June 15TH,. For that check out http://www.chapmanfamilies.org ,. Please contact me at scottbillhirst@yahoo.com or 401-377-4643, for any questions on this submission, e-mail preferred . 1. [AVERY] Averys Dropping from the sky
    2. My Jacob Avery dropped out of the sky and landed in NW Bradford C o PA. The census says he was born in PA ca 1784 . His wife apparently died young and she was not remembered when his son Charles died in 1909. Jacob had at least two sons - Charles, my great grandfather, one who is indexed on Ancestry as Jabez but I believe him to be Jabey of JB as he is also identified on a census record. He may also be the Jacob B Avery who died about 1913. There may have been another som named William. He had at least one daughter, Annis Ann who married Jacob Blodgett and possibly a daughter Delilah. Then there is a Henry who also dropped out of the sky to appear in the census alw ays with JB and Henry is identified as his cousin. That would mean that Jacob Avery had a brother. There is some indication that there may be some connection between Jacob and Scholarie Co NY. Anyone with a missing Jacob or Henry Avery? 1. [AVERY] Missing Avery Children
    2. Kayelache writes: Benjamin Avery apparently dropped out of the sky into what is now South Westerlo, Albany County New York about 1800. He appears on the 1800 through 1830 federal censuses there, and also the 1835 state census. He disappears after her sells his land in 1838. He was the father of 19 children, eight by his first wife, Sarah Cordelia Williamson, and eleven by his second wife, Sarah or Sally DeMelt. A son says on the 1860 census, that his father was born in Connecticut. A daughter says New York. His children scattered, two daughters stayed in Westerlo, Ann Eliza Avery married Oliver Hunt, and Mary Avery married Enoch Mabey. Another daughter, Sally Ann Avery married David Haight, lived for a time in Westerlo, and then moved to Delaware County, NY. Elizabeth or Elsey Avery married Montgomery Mackey, they lived in Green Co. NY Hannah Avery married Jeremiah Acker, and they lived in Orleans Co, NY. Squire John Avery lived in Jefferson, Schoharie County NY. Sons, William Ostrander Avery, and Thomas Williamson Avery moved to Orleans County and Benjamin Green Avery to Allegany County, New York. Two other sons and a daughter appear on the 1850 census in Albany city, but the sons are not found anywhere thereafter. This daughter, Merlany, was "deaf and dumb" and she later lived with her sister, Mary Mabey. Isaac moved to Illinois and another, Benjamin Samuel Avery, my gg grandfather, lived for a time in Allegany Co. NY, the moved to Wisconsin. His family is recorded in Sweet's Avery Genealogy, but the ancestry is disputed in a later genealogy, Avery's of Groton. I've been trying for the last thirty years to unravel his ancestry. Anyone with any interest in any of these people, please contact me so we can share information . I have a John R. AVERY who appears in Brooklyn in time to marry Sarah Cecile QUIGLEY somewhere between the 1900 census and, presumably, 1903 when my grandfather, John S. AVERY, known to all as Robert or Bob, was born. I am interested in your saying "Squire John AVERY lived in Jefferson, Schoharie County, NY" 1. Do you mean a town, Jefferson, in the county, Schoharie, or do you mean Jefferson County and Schoharie County? There is a Philadelphia NY in Jefferson County and my great grandfather John R. AVERY supposedly owned a stone yard and died in "Philadelphia." We have always assumed this was Philadelphia, PA, but since there has been quarrying in Jefferson County and many buildings there are built of native limestone I have wondered for some years if we did not have the wrong Philadelphia. 2. There are two unnamed sons who disappear... my Great Great Grandfather appears apparantly from nowhere, and disappears just as completely. As of yet I have no idea where he was born, what he did, or when exactly he died, although the 1910 census lists Sarah as a widow. Any connection may be a bit of a stretch, because the family legends don't match anything else, but they are just legends - I have exactly one document from this man's lifetime, and that is his second son't baptismal certificate. We don't know exactly when or where he died, where he is buried - and we know that is not with Sarah because she lived on to the 50's and is buried with her son and his wife in a cemetary that was not open in 1910. - or anything else for certain. If anyone else has ever run into Squire John AVERY or one of the other two sons anywhere and can add information I would be most grateful. Theresa

    3. I do not know if the information I have will help or hinder, but it might answer my missing link. My John Broadbent Avery is listed in the 1901 census for England, living in Manchester. Thereafter he simply disappears. No record of a marriage or a death in England or Wales, no war record from the First World War, nothing. I therefore THINK he may have emigrated. I have found records for John Avery emigrating to Canada (Quebec) from Liverpool in 1905 aged 30 - which would be correct and 2 further records for a John Avery leaving London for Melbourne Australia in 1911 and finally one in 1922 leaving Southampton for New York. In each case the name is simply John Avery and he appears (if it is him in any of these, to have dropped the "B" and "Broadbent" of his middle name. If anybody on the Avery rootsweb network can identify him as my great uncle I have loads of info on the rest of his family in the UK. Avery." 1910 census list my GGrandmother as widow with two sons living with her, John Stanton Avery Clifford Benedict Avery "John Stanton" is known elsewhere all his life as "Robert John Avery" Clifford's nickname in adulthood was "Duke" - no idea why. "John Stanton" born July 5, 1903, Clifford born within two years. House was owned by family and located on Eastern Parkway. Wife is found with her family of origin on 1900 census. I have no idea if either man had tremors, by the way. Family rumors: "John R. Avery" owned stone yards in Brooklyn and Philidelphia "John R. Avery" was killed on a business trip to Philadelphia when a stone in the stoneyard fell on him. "John R. Avery" may have changed his last name because his family did not agree with his marriage to an Irish Catholic. If he did change his name, it was from a name that began with a "B" "John R. Avery" was an "Older man" "John R. Avery" came from a family on Long Island that was into banking. My take on this? The stoneyards were located somewhere he could get to from Brooklyn, and somewhere he could get to from Philadelphia. Philadelphia may have been the famous Philadelphia in PA, or may have been the less famous Philadelphia in Jefferson County, NY. Another family member is also reported to have died when something fell on his head at a construction site, so who knows if the stories got confused over the years. He may have had some other career, with these yards as some form of investment. If he DID change his name, I suspect he may have changed it to the name of a family member, such as his mother's maiden name. That is, his mother might have been an Avery, even if he was born a B whatever name.. I have looked and looked for a suitable John Avery in NY and Philadelphia. I am not finding one who was single in 1900 and not around in 1910 who meets general criteria ... Yes, it has occurred to me that this whole "Marriage" may have been an extra-marital event. I have found a John Avery who was 25, but that seems young to have been an older man and homeowner less than 4 years later. I did find brickyard-owning Averys in Westchester, but they did not seem to have an extra male running around loose. If any of you seem to have anyone who MIGHT fit this profile, I'd love to hear about it. I promise not to be shocked or outraged if anything was a little dicey.
