    2. Jon - I just sent you a reply assuming I had sent you one earlier, since your message looked very familiar to me. Perhaps we met on the Rootsweb list? At any rate, if you did not get my long, sad story about my Averys, please let me know. I can see you have done quite a bit here, and I am perishing to find out about my great Grandfather, seemingly John R. Avery of Brooklyn NY around 1903-1905 and who knows where at any other time in his history, as unless he is hiding behind some person I have already looked at, he seems to be sort of....from Mars... 1. Re: [AVERY] New to list, DNA, Meyer, Benjamin
    2. Jim, I think I told you, I don't know. There is a Richard Avery who was a lawyer in NY and might be the right age to be "my" missing Avery that I previously wrote to you about - I just noticed yesterday that on the 1870 Census it lists him as being born in PA. Since "My" Avery has one document where he is listed as John R. Avery, and a son listed on papers as John S. Avery who nonetheless went by Robert or Bob all his adult life, and whose legal name I always thought was "Robert John Avery" I have sometimes thought that this lawyer might have been a connection. Is he one of yours? Would have been adult in 1870 and ancient by the time my grandpa came along, but he was referred to as an "older man". I wish I could say for sure I was one of your Avery's, Jim, since this is my huge brick wall. (Well, probably plasterboard. A few days in downtown Brooklyn looking up tax and probate records might sort that out. I haven't had time to try yet...) 3. Hello Molly, Thanks for responding, Yes, my Meyer/LeMeyer/Nehemiah AVERY did have a son Peter and I descend from Meyer -> Peter -> (Rev.) Henry -> Angus Clark -> Herbert DeLaVergne -> Robert DeLaVergne -> Jon Earl (me) I have also set myself a task to get my two daughters accepted by the DAR because of Peter. I have heard of the 3-part article in the Middle Tennessee Genealogical Society magazine, but at the time I heard about it, only the first part had been published. If all three parts of the article have been published, I definitely want to obtain copies. Thanks for reminding me and for the contact information for Jane Grey Buchanan. I admire you for pursuing genealogy for so long, if you have any original AVERY materials, references and sources, I'd be very interested in knowing about them. Incidentally, I have not found the common ancestral link between Meyer AVERY and Benjamin AVERY lines, but DNA is telling me there is one. And DNA is getting so precise that I've been told that there is a 50% probability that the common ancestor is about 7 generations back. 3. Hello list, I'm Jon Earl AVERY and I've just joined this list although I've been actively researching AVERY and other surnames for several years. I trace my AVERY ancestry back to Meyer/Myer/LeMeyer/Nehemiah AVERY b. ca 1710, NY. Since I'm a direct unbroken male descendant from Meyer AVERY, I recently had my DNA tested by Family Tree DNA. The closest (genetic distance of 1 based on 25 markers) relationship I've found so far is with the AVERY tree descending from Benjamin AVERY b. 1767. But I've not yet found the common ancestor link to that Benjamin AVERY branch. If there are other researchers on this list with focus on the Meyer AVERY or Benjamin AVERY lines, I'd appreciate a chance to share information. Thanks - Jon

    3. Hello, John --- You are lucky that I am still interested in the same (?) Avery's although I'm TRYING to sort and donate a retirement full of genealogy research, being 93. Funny thing --- I don't remember a BENJAMIN belonging to Nehemiah. Did your Nehemiah have a son PETER b in Poughkeepsie, NY 1739? Peter's father Nehemiah was m to Doricas Fredericks. ....... My granddaughter joined DAR using Peter......... I can't find the issue just now, but the MIDDLE TENNESSEE Genealogical Society published a three-part article on this Avery line. It is the most completely authenticated article I've ever seen. It just happens to have been written by a distant cousin --- Jane Grey Buchanan of Oak Ridge, TN. I think the best thing for you is to give you Jane's e-mail although she may not answer immediately unless her husband is much improved. He fell, badly damaging his head, and has been in and out of TN hospitals for a year or so. JGBUCHANAN@aol.com Good luck. 1. [AVERY] John Avery
    2. It's been a while since I bothered the list with my difficult ancestor, and since there seems to be a lot of information that might, somehow, tie in with him, as well as more that I have found out, I thought I would query again in the hopes that he is someone's someone and I can get any idea of where he came from, other than falling from Mars! My Grandfather was born in Brooklyn in 1903 to Sarah Quigly AVERY and her husband, presumably the same John R. AVERY noted on my Grandfather's younger brother's baptismal certificate in 1905. This is the only document I have been able to find that has Mr. Avery on it. Moreover, while we have a copy, the church is having trouble finding their record of it. In 1900 Sarah is living with her birth family, listed as single and working as a forewoman. In 1910 she is living in a brownstone on Eastern Parkway with one of her brothers and his wife, her parents, the two boys and one servant. She is listed as a widow. The boys are listed as John Stanton Avery and Clifford Benedict Avery. My Grandfather was always known as Bob and I had thought that his legal name was Robert John Avery. However, we know from stories told to my mother by her father and grandmother that Clifford "borrowed" his older brother's papers to go to sea, and he was listed officially by Social Security as John Stanton, which would confirm the name on the Census.By 1920 she had lost the house and was living on Nostrand Avenue. >From here I have nothing but rumours of what did happen or might have happen. They are in some points contradictory, and I think they may have gotten confused with some things that happened to other relatives. However, for what they are worth, here are the rumours about John R AVERY. His family allegedly opposed his marriage, and he may have changed his name because of this. If he changed it, he changed it from a name beginning with a "B" He was from Glasgow, Scotland. He was from Long Island, New York. He owned Stone yards in Brooklyn and Philadelphia (Which I take to mean somewhere near each of those places, with "near" perhaps being rather relative.) He was killed in an accident in the Stone Yarn in Philadelphia His family was in Banking on Long Island and had something to do with either the Williamsburg or the Dime Savings Bank. (To further confuse the issue, there is a Philadelphia NY which is near some quarries, and which has Averies in the same county.) He was an "older man" to my grandmother, who was about 20 or so in the 1900 census. My Great Grandmother was allegedly working as a maid when he met her. So I have an Avery who might be from New York, or might be from Pennsylvania. He might have some connection to Scotland. I think he probably has some connection to stone yards, although whether he died of an accident in one or not I have not been able to ascertain. I have not found a marriage record. I have not found a death certificate. I know he is not buried with Sarah, and I have not found his grave. And his name is Avery, but might have BEEN something else. And all this presupposes that the whole thing was on the up and up and he was not someone with two "wives" and families. Do any of you who have been reporting Branches of Avery Families that moved south into PA from NY, or anyone with Avery family on Long Island or in Westchester, have anyone ahnging around who might be my John Avery?? Thank you very much Theresa Pawlowski denchief@earthlink.net EarthLink Revolves Around You.

    3. My VistaPrint Electronic Business Card Does anyone have any connections with Averys from Romsey, Hampshire and from Alderbury, Wiltshire, England? My gg grandmother, Charlotte Avery, was born c 1817 in Alderbury, Wiltshire and christened in Sherfield English, Romsey, Hampshire. She had siblings: William, Ann, James, Elizabeth, Henry & Sophia, born between 1812 and 1828. Their parents were George Avery, born c 1783 in Romsey, Hampshire, and Elizabeth Rogers, born c 1788 in Christchurch, Dorset. I believe George's parents may have been Robert Avery and Ann Clark who married in Romsey on 10 July 1774 and that his siblings were Ann, Elizabeth, Robert, Hannah, Charlotte, James and Martha. Would be interested to hear of any connection. Regards Gerrie Johnson

    3. Dear Pat, I always reply directly to the person that contacts me - I guess I'm a privacy freak! Bear with me here - this is really, really, really confusing data that I have and I received it from a genealogist who had been researching this specific Avery/Every/Evere line for years. Her research has been very difficult to decipher but the bits and pieces that I have managed to decipher contain the following - and a lot of it fits and a lot of it doesn't and I haven't had any time to really pick it apart. There must be two lines that are related that have gotten all mixed up - but I do not doubt that they are related. The research I have finds an Edward Avery b. 1671 in Eastchester (Westchester) County, NY. His son - and this is where it gets really crazy because we don't know if this is the right line or not BUT his son Jan/John spelled his name "Evere/Evre" was born in 1715 in Marmoneck, NY, died in Fishkill, Dutchess County, NY, married to Anna Margaretta Hoff. The records then find another Edward Avery, b. 1737 in Tarrytown (Sleepy Hollow) NY, d. in 1812 in Brunswick, NY. He married Raghel/Rachel Daniels born in Tarrytown (Sleepy Hollow) NY. The Boston Transcript has the family settled in Dutchess County, removing to Rensselaer County and then to Little Nine Partners, NY - buying and selling land along the way. Boston Transcript from (June 5 1901) edition has family settled in Duchess County about 1771 then moving to Rensselaer County before 1795. Bought lot #25 in Little Nine Partners. I have many related lines in the Phillipsburg/Sleepy Hollow, Little Nine Partners Patent/Marmoneck/Fishkill/Beekman's Patent area - all these areas in and around the greater Eastcheser/Westcheser counties are SO confusing!!! Anyway, this Edward's son Aaron was born in Dutchess County in 1737 moved from Dutchess County to Saratoga County and then to PA in about 1804. Brewster Genealogy (Aaron married Sarah Brewster, descendant of Elder Wm. Brewster of the Mayflower.) I really have source documents for this this because I belong to the Mayflower Society. It states that Aaron resided at Saratoga and Pittstown NY, then moved town to Tunkhannock, PA, and Springfield PA. In the "Settlers of the Beekman Patent NY" it is noted that in the 1800 that land passed between Aaron Avery and William Weaks. Pardon Fish of, Saratoga Town, Saratoga County, NY, sold land to Aaron Avery in 1805. I had the town historian of Sleepy Hollow do a research on several of my lines, including Avery, and he said the cemetery was filled with my ancestors and he told me to look into the records of Phillipsburg because so many of the different lines are represented there. I hope that the above has not been useless information for you - but someday I will, with help, discover where the dichotomies lie. There must be several connections. I have one whole file drawer filled with the Avery/Every/Evere/Besly/Beslie/Hoyt/Haight/Daniels lines that show up in the Phillipsburg records. The French and Dutch names just give me a real headache. I should really hire a genealogist!! Don't know if any of this has helped - hope I haven't bored you to distraction!!! I wouldn't blame you if you just deleted the whole mess! But I will keep your email address if I ever decipher the cryptic details! 3. Franklin, thank you so much! I started my research in Gibson County and had not gotten to Johnston County, N.C. as yet. I am really getting confused as I found an entry from Gibson County Records, 1824-1846 by Tony Hays " 16 September 1833 Avery, Alexander - Alexander Avery Jr. Appointed guardian of T.S. Avery, John W. Avery, Henry C. Avery, James A. Avery and Sarah E. Avery, minor heirs of Alexander Avery Dec'd. These are children of Alexander and Elizabeth Vinson Avery and I thought this Alexander lived until sometime between 1840 and 1846. He is in the 1840 Gibson County census and then there is a Administrator's document found in 1846 for him. Is this document to make sure that these children receive their inheritance from their grandfather's estate? You are right, sorting out all these Alexanders is mind blowing. Again, thanks so much and I look forward to your detailed email. -----Original Message----- From: avery-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:avery-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Franklin Ingram Sent: Friday, August 15, 2008 1:39 AM To: avery@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [AVERY] Averys of North Carolina/Tennessee Alice, I just sent you via the Avery List a rather detailed E-mail with information about your Averyt ancestors before your Alexander Averyt, Jr. and Elizabeth Vinson Averyt.
