    1. [AVERY] I trace back to Meyer AVERY, DNA links me to Benjamin
    2. Jon Avery
    3. Hi folks, I trace back to Meyer (Myer/Nehemiah) AVERY/EVERY b. circa 1710, d. 1762,3 in Beekman Town, Dutchess Co., NY. 1738-1748: Meyer was taxed in Crum Elbow 1753: Meyer mentioned in Livingstone family land transfers. Meyer settled on a 215-acre farm in Lot 17 (Livingston) at intersection of Freedom Rd. & Traver Rd. 1753 and 1757: Meyer taxed in Beekman 1762: Meyer taxed in Crum Elbow !764: Meyer's widow, Dorcas FREDERICKS m. widower James AGMODIE/ ANCHMOEDY Since I can trace back to Meyer in an unbroken male line of descent, I had my DNA tested at Family Tree DNA. A very close DNA match traces back to a series of three Benjamin AVERYs as follows: Benjamin (1) AVERY b. circa 1767 m. Sarah Cordelia WILLIAMSON Benjamin (2) Samuel AVERY, b. Dec 12 1804, Westerlo, NY m. Abigail CHAMPION Benjamin (3) Harrison AVERY, b. Sep 15 1846, Allegany Co., NY m. Ellen SOUTHMAYD But my information on this line is weak and relatively unproven. But DNA proves that there WAS a common male ancestor shared by my Meyer AVERY and this line of Benjamin AVERYs. But we haven't found that ancestor yet. Anybody have more information on the Benjamin AVERYs? And how that line relates to Meyer AVERY? Jon Avery

    1. Re: [AVERY] Jacob Avery b. ca 1784
    2. This seems like as good a time as any to go over my missing Avery, and see if anyone has him somewhere on their tree. I'm responding here because he might be from NY. The name we have for my GGrandfather is John R AVERY on the Baptismal certificate of his second son, Clifford Benedict Avery, in 1905. He is found living at the known family address of 811 Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn, NY in several Brooklyn Directories starting about 1904 and ending 1908 or 1909, I believe. (I am going on memory here, I may be off a year or two.) Figuring that these things may have been compiled as much as a year in advance, I figure he lived till at least some time in 1906-1907. On the 1910 census for the family at the known family address his wife is listed as a widow. I think that is ALL the documentary evidence I have of this man. The 1910, 1920 and 1930 Census each show at least one of his sons, and his birthplace is reported as various different places. The boys names are reported differently on the census from what they used in life and what we have from birth/christening certificates. For example, my grandfather is listed as John Stanton Avery on the 1910 census, but as Robert John Avery in the index to NYC birth certificates. He went by Robert John Avery as an adult. My mother claims he was called "Donald" as a child. His brother, Clifford Benedict Avery, has a colorful history with names and went by John Stanton Avery at one point. He was called Duke. What they were called as adults my mother remembers quite clearly, so it is the earlier names and nicknames which are the question. And now into the realm of who knows what... Family legends are conflicting. They include but may not have been limited to the following - I am betting that there is some truth in each of these, but that none of them are entirely correct: John was Scottish, from Glasgow. Or he was from a Long Island family. He changed his name from something that began with a "b", like Baird or Bash or whatever. OR he didn't change his name, he only threatened to. His family disapproved of his marriage because my GGrandmother, Sarah Cecile Quigley, was "Shanty Irish Catholic." (This given as explanation for name change, if it happened.) He owned stone yards in Brooklyn and Philadelphia. (I assume this means he owned stoneyards and one was nearer to Philadelphia than Brooklyn, and one was nearer to Brooklyn than Philadelphia.) (No one has ever said if it was Philadelphia PA or Philadelphia NY, and there are indeed Averys in the Philadelphia NY area, very roughly speaking.) He died in an accident when something fell on his head in the stoneyard he owned in Philadelphia. (I wonder if this actually happened, because another relative died when stone/brick fell on him at a construction site, and I wonder if the two stories got confused.) He was an "older man" to my My Great Granmother, who was born between 1880 and 1884. His family had something to do with either the Dime Savings bank of Williamsburg or the Williamsburg Savings Bank of Brooklyn. As you can see, lots of room for conjecture. I have not found anyone I can be even reasonably sure is him alive on any census. The possibility that he may not have been single when he married my Great Grandmother has occurred to me, as well as the possibility that he left rather than died. If either is the case, I have to say I think those kinds of facts are a lot less shocking in 2010 than they were in 1910, and I would still like to know. So none of you hold back for fear of offending me! If anyone has a person on their tree who seems like he may be this guy, please let me know. Benjamin is my 4th great grand uncle going through my 5th ggrandfather Edward Avery who was born abt. 1737 in Tarrytown (Sleepy Hollow) Westchester County, NY.
