I've "rescued" two old photographs belonging to the PARKER Family of Chicago, Illinois. The first is identified as that of John PARKER, taken in 1883 at the Brand Studio in Chicago. John appears to be in his early teens at the time the photograph was taken. In addition to his name and the date the initials "E. J. B." also appear on the back of the photograph. The second photograph is one of an unidentified woman, also taken at the Brand Studio, most likely in the 1880's, she appears to be in her teens or 20's at the time it was taken. Based on limited research I was able to gather the following information regarding John and his family: John Edward PARKER was b. 15 Apr 1865 in Virden, IL to parents Charles Irving PARKER (b. 10 Mar 1838 in Bedford, NH) and Frances Emma AVERY (b. 24 Jun 1842 in Memphis, TN). John was one of 5 children born to this couple including, Adela Frances; John Edward; William; Alfred; and Mabel Lillian PARKER, all born between 1864 and 1876 in Virden and Danville, IL. John married Abbie or Addie Barbara SLATER (b. about 1865) on 6 Nov 1895 in Detroit, MI and together they had a son, George William PARKER b. Oct 1897 in Detroit, MI. Abbie or Addie PARKER died April 1905 and John died 4 Jul 1910 in Chicago, IL. Census records provide the following information: 1880 census of Hyde Park, IL: C. I. PARKER, age 42, a School Principal, born NH, parents born NH Frances PARKER, wife, age 39, Keeping House, born TN, parents born NY/VT Adele PARKER, dau, age 16, at School, born IL John PARKER, son, age 15, at School, born IL William PARKER, son, age 8, at School, born IL Alfred PARKER, son, age 6, at School, born IL Mabel PARKER, dau, age 3, born IL E. Happy New Year, I am always interested in new information on John and Ann Hooper Avery they came to the United States around 1850 from St. Columb, Cornwall, England and settled in Williamson co. Illinois and farmed in Lake Creek Township. Stories about this Avery family is that they came first to Georgia or Canada before they came to Williamson co. Illinois. John and Ann had around 11 children one of the sons was William Hooper Avery who was my great great grandfather who married Cynthia Caroline Fowler on December 24, 1861 in Williamson co. Illinois. Any information on this Avery family is appreciated very much. Thank you. Duane McKenzie. <dmckenze@hutchtel.net>
I've "rescued" two old photographs belonging to the BROWN Family of New York. The first is a photograph of Avery T. BROWN which was taken at the Rockwood & Co. Studio in New York, NY. The photograph is dated 7 May 1866 and includes a civil war stamp on the back of the photograph. I'm guessing that Avery is likely in his 20's or 30's at the time the photograph was taken. The second photograph is identified as that of A. T. BROWN and was also taken at the Rockwood Studio in New York City. The second photograph is dated 22 May 1868 and is addressed "For Miss Emma LAWRENCE" on the back. I am not sure if it is the same man in both photographs because the man in this photograph appears to be older than the two years difference between the dating of the photographs, and the nose appears slightly different, just not sure. Based on limited research I was able to find the following census information which may be a match: 1860 census of New York City, NY: Avery T. BROWN, age 25, a Lawyer, born NY Helene I. BROWN, age 47, born NY Mary BROWN, age 20, born NY Walter I. AVERY, age 46, a Merchant, born NY Clarissa A. TITUS, age 40, a Teacher, born NY Anna C. CLINK, age 48, born NY Julia CLINK, age 47, born NY Emma CLINK, age 43, born NY + 2 Servants 1880 census of New York, NY: Helena BROWN, age 67, born NY, parents, parents born NY Avery T. BROWN, age 40, a Lawyer, born NY, parents born NY I am hoping to locate someone from this BROWN Family so that the photographs can be returned to the care of family. If you are a member of this family, or you know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley

Hi! Lois (Marquardt) Blaisdell, a life member of the Avery Memorial Association www.averymemorialassociation.com has died. It was a pleasure knowing her. My acquaintance with her through the Avery group which I am also life member. She very obviously was interested in the Avery heritage and committed to it. Her obituary should be accessed through Legacy.Com www.legacy.com. It is in The New London Day www.theday.com and I assume also The Norwich Bulletin www.norwichbulletin.com ,. In 1860 South Creek Bradford Co. PA town of Gillets is a Deborah Blodget. Her maiden name was Avery and was born ca. 1785 in Schoharie Co. NY. In the same area is my grgrgrandfather Jacob Avery born about a year earlier. Could Deborah be his sister?? Jim Avery Dover PA
Are they any researchers here who have connected to the Dedham Branch of the Averys? If so have you come across a Jacob Avery b. ca 1784 possibly a son of a William? Thanks Jim Avery Dover PA
I have been trying to post to the list from a different screen name and nothing appears. Just trying this one.
Is anyone on this list related to the Dedham Branch of the family? The DNA testing at FTDNA indicates I am most likely related to that branch. Does anyone know if the Averys in Tioga County PA ties in with this branch and if those in Bradford Co PA in any way tie in with those in Tioga Co. I descend from Jacob Avery born ca 1784 in either PA or MA. He lived in South Creek or Granville Twp in Bradford Co Thanks JIm Avery Dover PA

Benjamin Avery named one of his sons, John. He settled in Jefferson, Schoharie County, NY and lived there until his death in 1863. He, also, had a son, John. This son was the contributor for the Avery family information in the Greene County, NY history. He stated that his father was one of three sons of a Thomas Avery who came to New York. Family tradition, perhaps a grain of truth, but I can't connect it. There was also a John Avery, whom I can't identify, on the 1840 census in Knox, Albany Co. NY. There were many families from Beekman who settled here. Not much help here, Karen In a message dated 6/23/2010 10:41:51 A.M. Hi! There was Norman" Spike" Gillespie in R.I., he was Master of Rhode Island State Grange and active in government. When I like of Gillespie I think of Darlene Gillespie of The Mouseketeers and her sister Gina who was in the TV sitcom "Karen",. They were from Canada. I know of no Gillespies in my lineage, but have five James Avery lines. There was a Doctor Zorba Gillespie in Ben Casey played by Sam Jaffe. Hello again, Jon. I think we corresponded a few month ago. I am the great great granddaughter of Benjamin Samuel Avery, son of Benjamin (1) Avery, born in 1767. Benjamin Samuel Avery's son, Benjamin Harrison Avery was the brother of my great grandmother, Isabel Hannah Avery Champion. Since we last touched bases, I found the death data for the first Benjamin Avery, April 1849 in Westerlo, NY, as recorded on the 1850 census death index. Now the missing link is just how Benjamin (1) Avery is related to Meyer Avery/Every. It is interesting to note, that on one of those early censuses, I think 1810, Benjamin was enumerated as Every. He appeared on every census from 1800 through 1830 in Westerlo. I have visited the farm where he was living there, lot 343 of the West Rensselaer Manor, land that Benjamin leased in 1789. On a corner of the property is a small abandoned cemetery, where his first wife, Sarah Cordelia Williamson is buried. Her hand-hewn tombstone still exists there. Westerlo at that time contained many families who were close neighbors from the Pound Ridge area. I have a drawer full of land records, etc from all three Benjamin's, Benjamin Samuel Avery and his family removed to Allegany County, NY, shortly after their marriage. All of their children were born there. In about 1856. they followed their eldest two children to Wisconsin where they lived until their deaths. Benjamin Samuel Avery had two wives, sisters. The first, and the mother of all of his children, was Abigail Champion, of an old Connecticut family I can trace back to the immigrant. Her parents had migrated up the Hudson River just after the Revolutionary War to Albany County. Her ancestry is well documented. Benjamin Harrison Avery later removed to Washington State. My ggm, Isabel Hannah Avery Champion continued to live in Eau Claire Wisconsin until her death at the age of 102. She married her first cousin, the son of her mother's brother, who had been widowed. Jerome Champion came to Wisconsin to live with his aunt and uncle, and Isabel married him. I always thought it odd, when reading through Isabel's diary, that her husband referred to his mother-in-law, as "Aunt Abigail." When I began to research this family, I learned that she was indeed, his aunt! The had 13 children, only four of whom reached maturity, and only three had issue. I often wonder if there was a genetic factor there. In her diary, she writes of many children who died young who "failed to thrive." I finally obtained the information about the DNA testing done on my third cousin, Robert Avery. I am hoping that, in time, there will be more descendants of Meyer that will help us figure out where we fit into this puzzle. At least, now, I can stop searching the Groton Avery line. Keep in touch! Karen Hahn In a message dated 6/23/2010 8:14:06 A.M. US Mountain Standard Time, jeavery@vt.edu writes: Hi folks, I trace back to Meyer (Myer/Nehemiah) AVERY/EVERY b. circa 1710, d. 1762,3 in Beekman Town, Dutchess Co., NY. 1738-1748: Meyer was taxed in Crum Elbow 1753: Meyer mentioned in Livingstone family land transfers. Meyer settled on a 215-acre farm in Lot 17 (Livingston) at intersection of Freedom Rd. & Traver Rd. 1753 and 1757: Meyer taxed in Beekman 1762: Meyer taxed in Crum Elbow !764: Meyer's widow, Dorcas FREDERICKS m. widower James AGMODIE/ ANCHMOEDY Since I can trace back to Meyer in an unbroken male line of descent, I had my DNA tested at Family Tree DNA. A very close DNA match traces back to a series of three Benjamin AVERYs as follows: Benjamin (1) AVERY b. circa 1767 m. Sarah Cordelia WILLIAMSON Benjamin (2) Samuel AVERY, b. Dec 12 1804, Westerlo, NY m. Abigail CHAMPION Benjamin (3) Harrison AVERY, b. Sep 15 1846, Allegany Co., NY m. Ellen SOUTHMAYD But my information on this line is weak and relatively unproven. But DNA proves that there WAS a common male ancestor shared by my Meyer AVERY and this line of Benjamin AVERYs. But we haven't found that ancestor yet. Anybody have more information on the Benjamin AVERYs? And how that line relates to Meyer AVERY?
