I am looking for information on a B.G.H.B (Bowling Green Henry Bascom) Avery. He was born in 1803 in NC and died ca. 1871/1872. I believe his wife to be Charity Brooks born 1805 in NC. He had a son William A. Green Avery born 1842 in TN and died 1883 in Alamo (Crockett Co., TN. W.A.G. Avery in turn had a son Thomas Green Avery, born Oct. 4, 1878 and died Jan. 10, 1963. T.G. Avery operated the Gates Milling Co. in Gates, TN until his death. Will gladly exchange information with anyone who can help. Thanks Jean Murchison

For years I have struggled with my Jasper Avery family. Perhaps one of you may have the answer for me. Jasper was my great-great-grandfather. He moved from Saratoga Co., NY, to Lewis to Jefferson, namely Watertown and the family lived in that area for years. I suppose some still do. He was born 1794 and married Sarah Sidmore, from Saratoga Co., in Lewis Co. At one time he was connected to the Averys of Groton, as being a son of Elisha who was married to Elizabeth Armstrong, dau. of Richard, all living in Saratoga Co. Many of my relatives joined the DAR through this line. Elisha was supposed to be the son of Ebenezer. Two books make this assumption. But I discovered in later years the Groton Averys did not accept Elisha as son of Ebenezer. And so, as far as I know it never got straightened out. And, yes, I joined the DAR through aother line and have 4 supplementals. I just would like so much to finally lay this to rest. I know there are other Averys. But which line is his? I would be grateful for information relating to Eugene Avery and his ancestors. Eugene Avery was said to have been from New York State. His year of birth is unknown, and may have been during the 1820s, 1830s, or 1840s. His middle name may have been Conant. His son, Fred Conant Avery, was born in 1861 in Dubuque, Iowa. Fred's son, my grandfather, was Wayne Conant Avery, born in 1892 in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Family tradition has it that our Averys lived in Connecticut during colonial times. The Groton Avery books list many Eugene and Fred Averys, but none seem to be mine. Any information or advice would be most welcome. Sincerely, Thomas A. Downing

Rapides Parish, LA, History http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/5769/eakin2b.htm Louisiana State Seminary (First Board of Supervisors included Henery Avery.) Louisiana State University had its beginning in Rapides Parish. It is said that the initial meeting of interested men in establishing Louisiana State Seminary was at Tyrone Plantation on Bayou Rapides. Tyrone was the home of George Mason Graham who was named to the first Board of Supervisors. He was elected vice president of the board. The Legislature of 1847 authorized a search for the most favorable site. In 1852, a committee decided on the pine woods on the north side of Red River in Rapides Parish. In 1859, Colonel William T. Sherman, who had resigned from the army and tried other professions, was elected to head the seminary. A West Point graduate, he was employed at $3500.00 per year. The school opened January 2, 1860 with 35 or 36 cadets with an increase until 70 were enrolled that first session. The first Board of Supervisors were: President, Thomas Overton Moore, Governor of Louisiana; General George Mason Graham, Vice-President; Thomas Courtland Manning; Neal Davidson, Michael Ryan; Dr. S.A. Smith; J.A. Bynum; Ralph Smith Smith; S. W. Henarie; William L. Sanford; Colonel Walter O. Winn; G. Baillio; Patrick F. Keary; W.W. Whittington; Colonel Feneton Cannon; John H. Ransdell; Henery Avery; D.C. Goodwin, and William B.G. Egan. After Louisiana seceded from the Union in January, 1861, Sherman resigned and returned to the United States Army. Most of the students resigned to enter the Confederate Army. One joined the United State Navy. The Seminary reopened October 2, 1865, under Golonel David F. Boyd as superintendent. The college building was burned October 15, 1869 and it was reopened in Baton Rouge the next year.

You may also want to try a mailing service (Mail Boxes, Etc, or others). I hope these ideas help as I'm sure you don't have Kinkos or MBE in England. Good Luck. Brenda Boutin
