Found this on the web and thought that someone might be able to use it. http://vax1.vigo.lib.in.us/~jmounts/wb12.htm#0220 WILLIAM R. AVERY, M.D. Was born in Washington County, Ind., March 19, 1838, the fourth in the family of seven children born to John and Tabitha L. (Ellis) Avery, who were natives respectively of North Carolina and Virginia, the former having been brought to this State in 1810. William R. assisted his parents at home until attaining his majority, during which time he received a fair education. In 1860 he began reading medicine with Dr. Still, of Palmyra, and in the fall and winter of 1861-62 attended a course of lectures at Rush Medical College, at Chicago. He remained with his preceptor until the following August 4, when he became a private in Company C, Sixty-sixth Indiana Volunteer Infantry, serving as such until March, 1863, when he was transferred to the medical department, where he remained until he was discharged at Washington, D.C., June 23, 1865. He became a partner of his former preceptor at Palmyra, and subsequently assumed entire charge of their extensive practice, remaining there five years, when he came to Fredericksburg which has since been his home and where he has a select and extensive practice. In 1876-77 he graduated at Miami Medical College, Cincinnati, and in addition to his practice is engaged in the drug trade. Dr. Avery is a liberal Democrat in politics, and a member of the Masonic brotherhood. October 24, 1867, he married Hannah M. Crotts, and six children have crowned this union, named Otto R., Charley E., Minnie M., Nellie B., Asa M. and A. N. Thought I'd send this to your list in case any of you might like it. I'm not related to any Avery or Karr people, but thought maybe someone would have a use for this info. I got this from _Clark County, Arkansas Obituaries and Death Notices, Volume 2, 1901-1913_, page 38. This happened to be on the same page as some info regarding a Powell ancestor of mine. AVERY, J. B. We learned from S. C. Karr of Hebron of the death of this old friend, which occured at their home near Hebron about 10 o'clock on Sunday night. The cause of death, we understand, was catarrh of the stomach. Mrs. Avery was about sixty years old and had been married to Mr. Avery for about seventeen years. She was formerly a Mrs. Lawter and lived here in Arkadelphia for several years. (1904) Hope this helps somebody. Please don't send me any mail regarding the Avery or Karr surnames, as this was all I had concerning them. Hi! I'm new to the Avery Roots List and hope to find some information on Elizabeth Avery, born 6 MAY 1806 in Orford, Grafton, New Hampshire. She married Daniel Clark on 6 MAR 1827 and died in Aurora,Cayuga, NY on 17 OCT 1841. I am especially interested in the names of her parents. Town records for Orford, Grafton, NH from 1790's to early 1800's mention a Jesse Avery, a Silas Avery and a Simeon Avery Can anyone out there connect Elizabeth to one (or all) of these three? or anyone else in Orford? Any information will be much appreciated! Cheryl Haas wrhaas2@aol.com
I appreciated seeing Janet's message to the loop concerning Avery information at Ancestry and also her note concernign the Beatty 2000 project. I do think it would be a great idea to emulate Ray's project with the Avery surname. What they have done is basically set up a huge research cooperative that is resulting in unbelievable success stories. Well worth the effort, in my opinion. Janet and I are both researching our common ancestors, AMY AVERY (born abt 1777) and ADOLPHUS DOWNER (born 1775). Adolphus was born in Preston, New London Co., CT; Amy was born in CT, specific location unknown. We have been searching unsuccessfully for *many years* to find the birthdate, birthplace, and parentage of Amy AVERY. Amy Avery and Adolphus Downer were mrd abt 1800. The book, The Downer Family in America, specifies that they married in Norwich, but whether that was Norwich NY or Norwich CT is unknown. We haven't found any documentation in CT records, nor in Norwich NY records. Any suggestions or help, especially specific to Amy Avery, would be very gratefully accepted! please reply to either or both of us: =Cheryl Hemingway chemingw@inet.net or my niece: Janet Tabares janetaba@wt.net
Hi, I'm a subscriber to the mailing list. I am also a member of the Beatty family mailing list and the Beatty Project 2000. Ray Beaty is the list moderator, organizer, great guy, and a wealth of information. The reason I mention this is that there is some great research going on with the project and was wondering if maybe we could do something similar with this list. Ray's email address is r1941@idt.net I wrote and asked him if he could give some advice on how he set the project up to the list moderator and he said that he'd dig up some things he wrote - notes to himself that sort of thing. So, if the list moderator wants to try something like this, give him a shout. Thanks! Janet E. Tabares janetaba@wt.net
