For those of you who subscribe to the Avery Advocate, you will see listed in your new newsletter a manuscript by Douglas C. Schenk, "The Descendants of Henry B. and Bessie S. (Adams) Avery". For those of you who do not get the Advocate here is the information. The book has approximately 255 pages, printed on one side. It is clipbound with flexible boards, and includes copies of lots of old letters, photos, clippings and some articles that range from 1800-1994. This is a very interesting, informal genealogical and historical type of manuscript. Mr. Schenk typed the entire manuscript on an old typewriter so it is not what we are used to in the way of formal genealogical books. However, you will find it has had a lot of very loving work put into it and is very interesting reading. It begins with Christopher Avery (b.1590 d.1679). It contains many other surnames (with information) besides the Avery name. The price is more than reasonable: $28.00 ppd. Mr. Schenk is not of the computer age, so you can write to him at: Douglas C. According to the family bible, and Sweet's Avery genealogy, Benjamin AVERY was born in 1768, place and parents unknown. He first appeared in Westerlo, Albany County in 1789 when he was granted a piece of land in the west Van Rensselaer manor . His first wife was Sarah Cordelia WILLIAMSON, who was born in 1768 and died in 1804. He then married Sarah DEMELT. They disappear from census and records in 1837 when they sold the land. He was the father of 19 children by the 2 wives. One son, John, was a legislator for Schoharie County. Can anyone help me find his parents?

I am currently researching the AVERY line in Chatham, Tioga County, PA. I have listed the oldest generation I know below. Charles appears in the 1850 and 1860 Census but not in the 1840 or earlier Census in Tioga County, PA. Both of these censuses indicate that Charles was born in NY but his wife and all his children were born in PA. The CLOOS line was in NY in 1795 but was in Tioga, PA in the early 1800's but I can't pinpoint when they arrived. If you have any information on this AVERY line I would love to exchange info. Thanks. Peter - Thank you for posting the Descendants of Christopher Avery. I am interested in James Avery (Apr 20, 1673-1754) and Mary Griswold. Can you give me a location for them? I have the will of a James Avery dated 4 Oct 1754 and proved November 1754 in Norfolk Co., VA. It names his wife Mary, sons George, James, William and John; daughters Mabel, Frances, Matthew (?), Mary and Elizabeth. My gg grandfather George Avery was born 1764 in Bute Co., NC and died 10 June 1853 in Wilson Co., TN. He served in the Rev War from Edgecombe Co., NC and married Elizabeth Allen 1788. I believe there were numerous Avery/Allen connections. Another closely related family was that of George Sugg, both in Edgecombe, NC and Wilson, TN. I am trying to learn the parents of both George Avery and Elizabeth Allen. I suspect George may be a grandson of the James Avery mentioned above. Sharon, I don't really have an answer to you inquiry about information on Oscar Avery/Elizabeth Rogers. But I too had Avery's in Kankakee, IL. - Pilot/Herscher area. Mine were much earlier, mid 1800's, and I was curious if you had any connection to that time frame in that location. My George Avery/Elecia Fleming, settled there from Strongsville, Ohio. His father, Thatcher, left several brothers and sisters in New Hampshire when he pioneered west to Ohio. Just thought that cousins could have joined up generations later in Kankakee, IL. Hi, all. I'm new to the Avery list, but have been on the Sutton list for about a year. I'm looking for information on the family of Fleta Avery who was married to my great grandfather Thomas Jefferson Sutton. I can only say that Fleta was born around 1870 in Canton Mississippi and died April 25, 1928 in Duncan Mississippi. The marriage took place in 1887.
