    1. Unknowns.....
    2. Karen A Miller
    3. Linda, I'm not sure I am answering or understanding your question about "unknowns" but let me tell you something that I have started doing. I use Family Tree Maker by Broderbund. When I have individuals that I don't who or where they belong I make a file for just them. First I go to unrelated individual under the People catagory and click on that. It brings up a clean screen and I type in UNKNOWN AVERY in the male/husband line. Then I go down to the children, skipping the spouse/wife area and everything in between. At the children area, I break my "unknowns" down by geographic areas, i.e. Missouri, Illinois, New Hampshire. Type the state just as if it was the first name of a child, i.e. MISSOURI AVERY, and UNKNOWN AVERY, will automatically become it's "father". If you want to take is a step farther, click on the child/MISSOURI AVERY and on this page where the children are to be listed, break the enteries down to counties, i.e. CARROLL AVERY. To enter the "unknown" surnames or information, click on notes at any level your "unkowns" relate to and type to your hearts desire. It this clear as mud? What you have, as far as the computer is concerned, is a person by the name of UNKNOWN AVERY, with a child named MISSOURI AVERY, and a grandchild named CARROLL AVERY. FTM will question the capitalizaiton, but I over-ride that and use this because it is very easy at a glance in my index to find this unique file. It's important that you use the male/husband catagory and that you enter the UNKNOWN as a first name - this way it will pop up in the index correctly. You can print the notes from this file, just as you would any other, and be able to look it over at a glance or send it on to someone else who may be able to identify someone listed there. "If" you or anyone else is using FTM and needs better instructions, please E-mail me directly. I still have to try and place these guys into the correct context, but now when I am gathering information and I come across someone I may or may not need at a later date to fill in my family tree, I just jot their data into my FTM program and move on. When I find a new sibling or get a new lead, I click over to the notes section of this family and scroll up and down to see if anyone fits in. Good Luck! This file will gedcom into another file as a person named UNKNOWN AVERY. By the way, I have Witaker, Wittaker, Wittacre. Karen Avery Miller karenmiller@CompuServe.com

    1. Unknowns.....
    2. Linda Knott
    3. I've been spending the last couple of days cleaning up my database and have come across several different entries that mean the same. Every one seems to have a different way of listing those whom they don't have the proper name. When I receive information in GEDCOM, I try to go through and make it uniform. I would like to know what the proper way to list "Unknowns" is. Maybe this will help others also. Examples below: Girl West Boy West Unknown West //West ? West Unknown Mary Unknown Mary Mary// Any suggestions would be appreciated. :-) Linda Whittaker Knott LilBitGal2@snet.net http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Prairie/5868 WHITTAKER,LOVE,WEST,CHAPIN,MALOTT COMSTOCK,ELLIS,FERGUSON KNOTT,GOODWIN,AVERY CLARK,EVANS,MOCK,ROCHFORD,ALVEY

    1. The name Avery, Averie, Averye, Averill
    2. Andy Herron
    3. Hi folks - Awhile back I wrote asking whether anyone had seen the name of Averill used simultaneously with Avery and I did receive a response back saying that no one had seen this. Well maybe we need to look a little farther back. I submit the following as general interest to the group: Most of the following Averill information is taken from "The Ancestry of Dudley Wildes 1759-1820, of Topsfield, MA. Author: Davis, Walter Goodwin, 1885-1966. Published: Portland, ME, Anthoesen Press, 1959. 193 pages. "Averill sounds like a place name, not unlike Haverhill, lacking the aspirate. there is no English parish so called, but possibly some smaller piece of land or geographic point, such as a hill, bore the name. Avery, the alternative name in the early generations is equally obscure. "Ave," like 'avon' is a river name; 'haver' means oats. Haverhill being a hill where oats were grown, while 'ever' was Old English for boar. None of these possibilities are very satisfactory, and the origin of the name remains a puzzle." And the following is taken from the will of John Averill who died in 1577 - He directed that he be buried in the church of Chipping Norton, to which he left 10s. To the poor of the town, 20s. To my son William Averye. To John Trevis, a feather bed, etc. To Mathew Trevis, 13s4d. To Willaim Trevis, Mathew Trevis' son, 12d and all his children 12d apiece. To every one of John Trevis's children 12d. apiece. To William Trevis, 11s 12d. To Phillip Avery, Richard Averye and Edward Every, my borther William's sons, 20s. apeice. To Katherin Newmann, 20s. To my brother William Averie, 6s. To my sister Annes Crosley, 40s. To Katherine Trevace. Residue to my son George Averye, executor. Overseers: Michael Chadwell, Edward Walford, William Avery, Thomas Newmann, William Trevis. Witnesses: Michael Chadwell, Edward Walford, Thomas Newmann. **Archdeaconry of Oxford, Series I, Vol. 8, p 514 Note all the various spellings of the same family's names and all in one document. This happens again in other family documents prior to William Averill coming to New England abt. 1635. Anyway, I found the name-game quite fascinating- anyone have anything to add? Epidemics have always had a great influence on people - and thus influencing, as well, the genealogists trying to trace them. 1. Averys and Boices Ulster NY ca. 1830's
    2. JW
    3. Hello, cousins. I have just discovered what, I hope, may lead to a breakthrough: My great granduncle, Boise Avery b. 1862 Toronto, CA, has the same given name as many Boises who live next to many Averys in Olive, Ulster, NY ca. 1830. I see no such juxtapos. of Boises/Averys, and I have checked this out to the hilt. Does anyoen have any info on these two families at this time and place? The Boices are: Isaac M.; Jacob; John; Matthew; Peter and Samuel. The Averys are Andrew; Isaac and Moses. There is also an Obadiah Avery in Ulster Co. at the same time, but he is quite a distance away from the others. Later, Averys and Boices are also near one another in MI (ca. 1850's) very near Huron County MI, where my great grandparents, Enos Avery and Clara Brade were married in 1888. Can one of you give me some clues about all of this? Thanks to any kind soul who does! Evelyn Guilford IN

Married Rachel O'Quin in Avoyells Parish, LA, Aug 1843. 1850 census says born in England, 1860 Census says b in N.J. I suspect that he probably was born in England and came to N. J. before migrating to Louisiana. They had several, on of which was John Paul Avery, b 4/6/1848, who married a Celeste Andress. Does any of this ring any bells for anyone? Would love to hear from You. Nettie
