I found a couple of good resources- a page of links to obituaries and a page of links for US newspapers. I listed them on my links page under obituaries: http://www.auvil.com/message.htm I started to look for Merle Cougar but there are a lot of papers - do you know what city to look under? Catherine
Has it been confirmed that our Susan Hatfield is the daughter of Matthias Halfhill (Mateus Halberg) and Elizabeth Livengood? I realized I don't have a reference for that in my family tree file and I'm making a new effort to make it clear in my file what is conjecture and what is confirmed. -- Catherine
Thanks, Catherine. I've been looking through each of those Wisconsin newspapers listed on both websites for the past few days now. Aunt Merle was not in close touch with the family, and we don't know where she resided. Will keep checking with Ohio family members as often as is respectful... ~Jolene
Hi All, Could everyone please keep an eye out for an obituary for MERLE COUGAR of Wisconsin...? She was Todd's grandaunt and the daughter of Okey Charles Auvil, Sr. We just got word, from Michigan, that she passed away recently, but we're not sure of the details. Thanks, Todd and Jolene

Catherine: I thought it was you but I am even more superficial in my old age [than formerly] and just didn't bother with details. Actually I am related to J. Abel directly, according to the records I have. If I remember you explained to me that I was also related to the particular, I believe adopted, John Auvil via the other [female line]. Gene "C. Stan... I'm trying to contain myself here... :) If you wouldn't mind, I'd really love to see how everyone's related. I'm just stunned and hoping that anything might take us further into our search. Also, Catherine? I've just spoken to Todd's father, Jerry in Michigan. He said that although he's not 100% positive, he thinks that the male siblings you have listed as his grandfather's (Okey Charles Sr.) sound awfully familiar; not sure about the females, however. He'll have his brother, Glenn, look into obtaining a death certificate in Ohio. Will let you all know as new developments emerge... Thanks so much! Todd and Jolene Auvil
Hey everyone, Assuming that the information on my tree is correct, I asked my FamilyTreeMaker program to do a kinship report. I came up with the following for those who responded to the "who are your Auvils" message: Catherin is my half 5th counsin once removed. Todd is my half 6th cousin. Gene is my half 4th cousin twice removed. Gene is Todd's 2nd cousin twice removed. and Catherin's 3rd cousin once removed. Todd is Catherin's 4th cousin once removed. Fun stuff!!! Take Care Stan
Hello Everyone! My name is Jolene, and I am married to Todd Edmund Auvil of Michigan. I am relatively new to the Auvil family search ~ it's just been a bit over two years so far, but it seems like ages... Todd and I hit a wall in our research but have gotten some good ideas from Catherine. We'll be pursuing those new avenues and will definitely keep you all updated. So far, we've only gotten as far as Todd's great-grandfather: OKEY CHARLES AUVIL, SR. (married Rosie Elanora Hepding/Hepting) Children (not in chronological order): - Hilda Irene Auvil Burke (married Harold Burke, Sr.) b. 03/23/1913 (Maxwell Pleasants, WV) d. 11/08/1990 - Wilbur Auvil b. ??? d. ??? in California - Merle Auvil Cougar b. ??? whereabouts unknown - OKEY CHARLES AUVIL, JR. (married Ruth Lauretta May Harter) b. 07/23/1910 (Baltimore, MD) d. 10/1982 (Akron, OH) Children: - Glenn Eugene Auvil - GERALD (Jerry) OKEY AUVIL (married Marlene Skonieczny) b. 02/01/1937 (lives in Michigan) Children: - Peggy Ann Auvil Guffey - TODD EDMUND AUVIL

Is Jinx Hartung still living? I'd like to get the source information and file number for the D.M. Auvil discharge papers she described. I am currently gathering census and land records regarding D. M. Auvil. I'd like to track down his military records as well. Carla Cegielski On Tuesday, January 11, 2000 12:30 PM, C. I have typed up the births and baptisms from Jacob's Lutheran Church gathered by Jinx Hartung. http://www.auvil.com/jacobslutheranchurch.htm I hope this will be a useful starting point for further research and verification. happy hunting Catherine Auvil in Olympia
I have new photos up at my Auvil family site: http://www.auvil.com/photographs.htm I scanned in a photo of John And Catherine Cox Auvil from Jinx Hartung's (now discontinued) newsletter. If anyone has a better copy I would appreciate a copy. I also added a photo of Jesse and Faye Auvil. Catherine Auvil
My Auvil family tree file is based on original research of Jinx (Auvil) Hartung. I hope that we can use it as a tool and starting point to gather original documents and verify -or correct- as much as we possibly can. Does any other Auvil family tree exist besides the Jinx Hartung file? I hope that we can use this mailing list to notify others about what we are working on so we don't spend money ordering microfiche that someone has already checked. Here is what I will be working on: In February 2000 I plan on trying to find out if a death certificate exists for John Auvil (married to Catherine Cox). If anyone has already looked into that I would appreciate an email. Also in February I plan to start trying to get census records from Pennsylvania from 1800 to 1840 to try and verify if Daniel Abel/Auville is listed. Has anyone looked into that? I'd love to know what you are working on. Catherine Auvil http://www.auvil.com/auville.htm in Olympia
Hey Gene- That's me with the complicated theory! I'm sorry, I'm not very good at explaining things, I'll try again: Even if we are not related through Auvils, both lines - the Susan Hatfield line and the Anna Hochwaerter line are related through the Hochwaerter/Hovatter family. Take a look at our family trees if you are still curious: http://www.auvil.com/auville.htm happy hunting Catherine Auvil in Olympia
I agree with Richard that we shouldn't make any assumptions. I post information that I find onto my website but I hope that people will just use it as a tool and a starting point to find original documents when possible and make their own conclusions. I try to remain open to all possibilities. happy hunting http://www.auvil.com/auville.htm Catherine Auvil in Olympia

Richard: You say you find it hard to believe that Able was changed to Auville. It may be you just have trouble believing they were German not French, but most of the people around them and whom they married were also German. I believe my ex wife found records substantiating the children of J Able underwent such a change of name to Auvel or Avel and then Auvil. She may even have copies of birth or death certificates which show this. I never paid as much attention to the research she was doing as I should have. It has also been pointed out to me that Abel is likely to have been Jewish originally in Germany. If I remember right there was a John Auvil[le] adopted by a Daniel Auvil who lived in Tucker Co. Also someone on the net had a complicated story about one of them marrying a second time so that there was link between my relatives not through Auvil but a wife of one. Gene Auville "C.
