    1. [AUTRY] Re: Autry spelling
    2. Concerning the spelling of the Autry name, I think Jo Autrey's comments are excellent. Mayo Bundy in our book refers to the early spellings in the NC records. The census records are of little use because the census takers were barely literate and the people giving their names were illiterate. On p 2 in the book there is a reference to an even earlier Autry referred to in NC records as "Autray". Since no one knows how or whether he is related to Cornelius, Mayo just listed him. The commonest odd spelling is probably Otery, which I suspect came from the Southern pronunciation which often stretched one word out to several syllables.I know because I still do so! Another interesting spelling that was mentioned on the AutryNet some years ago is that of Altree-it sounds perfectly logical if you speak it fast enough. There are probably a few more yet undiscovered. At least, this is not as hard as those of my ancestors whose names had the German umlaut translated to English. Robert Autry Brooks
