I ran across some interesting names in the Scottish Church Records, which consists of one CD, published several years ago and widely available in LDS family history centers. For years, some people have suggested Scotland as an origin of the Autry's, by various spellings. In my family, some said they were French Huguenots who were refugees to Scotland, and then by some way to America. While running through this CD, I found some interesting names. I have no way of knowing if they relate to the American Autrys. The only AUTTREY spelling I found was an Elisabeth Auttrey, born 29 July 1748 in Stirling, Scotland, to Charles Auttrey and Janet Drummond. Why only one person is listed is puzzling. Perhaps it represents someone passing through Scotland? At least, the date is near the time they seemed to appear in North America. There were several children named MCAUGHTRIE, including Alexander, Thomas, William, etc., with similar named fathers. And daughters named Agnes, Elizabeth, Robina, etc. All were listed from Ayr, Scotland, with dates from about 1830 to 1850, which is much later than the Autrys appeared in America. There were one or two named MCAUGHTERY, MCAUGHTREE, and MCAUGHTRY. All of these were from Ayr with similar dates around 1840. So all would seem to be variations of the above spelling. There was one earlier one, a MCAUGHTER from "Kirk" in 1693, who does not seem to be related. I have no idea whether or not these persons have any significance to Autr*y genealogy. But with their well known propensity to be out spoken Protestants, I found it interesting and provocative. Robert Autry Brooks
Your information is very interesting. A relative of mine once told me that the origin for the KY Autry's was Scotland....... I kind of ignored it.......may have to do a retake. Thanks for sharing.
