I have some of the same feelings about ancestry.com as you do. They charge for a lot of their info and then use our "free"info. Cousins, I fail to understand this animosity toward a company that provides access to genealogical information that it has to buy, digitized, and create search engines for so that its subscribers can use it 24 hours a day 7 days a week for a small subscription fee. I can't drive to the nearest large library or National Archives -- pay for gas, lunch, and the outrageous parking fees *once* for the annual subscription to Ancestry.com And, I certainly can't access these repositories any time I WISH to -- only when they are open. For those of us who work full-time online libraries are wonderful. I can't even check a book out of the nearest big library without paying $50 a year for a card. The insinuation made that Ancestry.com (or any other online genealogical company) steals YOUR genealogical information and then charge for it is ludicrous. The Message Boards, Mailing Lists, WorldConnect, and Ancestry World Tree are all FREE and open to anyone who wants to share information. If you have a problem with someone "using" or "stealing" your material, you should not be posting it or sharing it in any format in the first place, and if someone has plagiarized or infringed upon your copyrighted material (not just a bunch of genealogy "facts") then your problem is with them -- not the company that provides the means whereby those of us who wish to SHARE information can do so. No one OWNS their ancestors or the genealogical FACTS about them. If you don't wish to share your work with others, that is your prerogative, but on the flip side of the coin, why should you be obtaining information from those of us who are willing to share? It appears that you are upset because some else who also is researching Autrys posted the same or similar information that you obtained from a book or periodical and posted on this list. This is a public forum and anyone can access and search its archives. While possibly this person did obtain the information from your post and neglected to give you credit for it, that is an etiquette error (of which thousands of hobbyist genealogists are guilty). You should contact the person and ask them to credit you properly -- if that is what you want. You do not *OWN* that material or have exclusive use of it. Moreover, that information you posted here is widely available and a simple search in PERSI will locate it and one can obtain a copy of the publication from Allen County Public Library (and other repositories) quite easily. It may even be posted on any of the various USGenWeb sites, etc. How this possible etiquette breach by a private researcher translates into wild accusations toward Ancestry.com is beyond me. It appears to me that your beef, if you really have one, should be personally with the person you think used *your* material without credit rather than you ranting and raving on a public forum about a company "stealing" *your* material.
