Otery/Ottery was a fairly common spelling of Autry in the South particularly. Can't you just here those folks "there is old Mr Otery"? As you know many of these people could not read and write, and the census takers were not much better (like today, probbly anyone they could find to work, and politically appointed??) The second marriage of my GGF John C. Autry was found in Crawford in 1848 in a newspaper as marriage of Rev. John C Otery--the court house records all burned and it was 150 yrs before anyone found the information. I always wondered if the original spelling was not Aughtry, and I think that is the spelling in the Scottish church records (on CD, and only a couple of listings). It sounds so British!!
