Hi folks, you may remember that I posted a couple of articles here on this message board for all of us to enjoy regarding Simon Autry (KY) and Giles Autry (KY). Well, guess where I discovered them tonight....on Ancestry.com. Really ticks me off. The gedcom belongs to: Contact: Larry & Elaine Blackman <leblackm@bellsouth.net>
The Taylors: Did you write the articles or get them from a public source? If they were available from a public source, how do you know these people didn't get them there? You know, most of us who are unable to travel to all the original sources get a lot of our information on the internet and from e-mail contacts. By compiling it in our own family gedcom, we help to show the connections. So long as people try to give sources, I see nothing wrong with sharing what we have ferreted out from many sources. It helps others get a start. Everyone who is researching genealogy should learn early on to look for sources cited and take everything with a grain of salt until they have checked original sources. I am always happy to share what I have with anyone, with the caveat that it may be wrong, so check it out. Why are you so upset that someone is helping you share information? Do you hope to sell it some day? I thought most genealogists in this country were trying hard to keep this information freely accessible to all. Also, you should know by now that anything you post on a website or a mailing list is going to be grabbed by all interested parties and maybe even sold by the unscrupulous. I have been getting the same sort of complaints from someone on another list I subscribe to and the list manager finally told them it was more appropriate to a geneology chat room than a family research list. I am sorry you feel offended. I guess I just don't understand why you care, unless you did write the articles and were not asked for permission or given credit. In that case, you are right to be offended. I am having second thoughts about publishing my gedcom on the internet, if my sources are going to be offended, even with credit. By the way, no one ever told me that my name was published in a book, nor asked my permission. I found out when I purchased the Bundy/Brooks book. I was not offended. In fact, it was especially nice to see my parents and grandparents in there.
