That is a most interesting thought. Knowing how people misspellnames, it is possible that Daughtry got shortened to Aughtey to Autry etc. After all, most of the people were illiterate and scribes wrote the wills, etc. Perhaps Cornelius Autry et al of Edgecombe Co, NC, came via VA, as so many did, and did not enter the country de novo. As Mayo recorded in his books, there were "Autrys" around before Cornelius, but no one knows their descendants etc. Robert Autry Brooks
Fellow researchers.....thanks for the input on this name variation. This certainly is a complicated surname!!!!!!
In Mahan Blair Autry's book, he states that Daughtry and variances of it sometimes derived from the Autry name, due to ignorance, illiteracy, etc. of record keepers. Others are Autery, Ottry, etc.
I looked on line and came accross a website which claims that Daughtrey/Daughtry is sometimes a variation of the Scot name O'Dochartaigh (or without the O) pronounounced DOCKH-har-tay, My understanding of the reason for thinking Daughtr(e)y was a variation of Autr(e)y was because of the D'Autr(e)y variation. If some of us knew the origins of the family lines, I'm sure we would have a better idea of the original version of the name. It is also likely that some Daughtr(e)ys came from one source and some from another and the names ended up the same or similar after coming to this country. This is probably a fruitless discussion without more documentation, but it spurs some historical interest and questions of origin.
