    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/idB.2ACEB/195.2 Message Board Post: My gr-gr-grandparents were Joseph Darnell/Darnall and his wife Mary (Polly) Awtrey/Autry, who came from Morgan Co, GA to the LaGrange area, Troop Co, GA. A Joseph Darnell, Benjamin Darnell (owner of land in Morgan Co, GA), Sam'l Darnell, and Charles Darnell were on the 1810 Tax List for Clarke Co, GA, in Capt. Selman's District. Also, Zachariah Darnell was listed "1 poll" (meaning that he owned no land). A Joseph Darnell is listed in the Georgia 1820 Census Index for Greene County, Rankin District, p. 237. Greene County borders Morgan and Putnam Counties on the East. Others listed in the Georgia 1820 Census Index are: Darnal, Benjamin, Morgan County, p. 412, Pace's District; Darnald, Jeremiah, Morgan County, p. 382, Farrow's; Darnell, David, Morgan County, p. 408, Pace's District; Darnell, Henry, Baldwin, p. 054, Milledge District; Darnell, William, Morgan, p. 364, Leonard's District; Darnell, Zachariah, Greene, p. 228, Gregory District. A Joseph Darnell is listed in the Georgia 1830 Census Index for Morgan County, p. 261; and a Samuel Darnell for Newton County, p. 031. Joseph and Mary Autry Darnell/Darnall were associated with the Goss, Thornton, Greer, Whaley, Calloway and other families at the County Line Baptist Church, in Troop Co, GA, located not far from the present-day entrance to Calloway Gardens. Dau. Mariah had married the Rev Bennager Goss, 4 Jan 1830 in Morgan Co, GA. Son Samuel Baldwin Darnell married Martha Caroline Johnson 30 Jan 1840 in Troup Co, GA. Dau. Elizabeth Autry Darnell married Young Taylor Greer 1 Mar 1837 in Troup Co, GA; -- he was born 1812 in or near Madison, Morgan Co, GA. Dau. Emaline married Isham W. Thornton 12 Nov 1837 in Troup Co, GA. Dau. Martha H. married William E. Greer 27 Nov 1845 in Chambers Co, GA; -- he was born 2 Feb 1818 in Morgan Co, GA. Dau. Catherine married Wesley V. Thomaston 6 Jan 1856 in Roanoke, Randolph Co, AL. (There were younger children, who married later in AL.) According to Weathers, Gen. B. F., "Early Days in Randolph County," published in Barefield, Marilyn Davis, "Historical Records of Randolph County, Alabama 1832-1900," p. 4 (Southern Historical Press, Inc. 1985), Bennager Goss came to Roanoke, Randolph County, AL, from Heard County, GA (about 1832), a Missionary Baptist preacher, and built the First Baptist Church of Roanoke. Isham Thornton came from Troup Co, GA, and built his home (the first painted house in Roanoke) on a lot adjoining the site of the new First Baptist Church. Isham was a manufacturer of buggies and also had a mill and a mercantile establishment. He later relocated to Lineville. Joseph and Mary Darnell came to Randolph Co. with their family, and he settled at Wedowee. Joseph died 7 Apr 1856 in Roanoke (probably), Randolph Co, AL. His widow Mary (Autry) Darnell remarried 10 Dec 1857 in Chambers Co, AL to Euclidas Longshore. He died 10 Mar 1861 in Roanoke, Randolph Co, AL. Mary lived to near 100 years old, dying in the late 1880s or early 1890s in Chambers Co or Randolph Co, AL. It would be great if anyone could help me identify Mary's parents and siblings.
