Nicholas Drake is listed as the only son of Edmond Drake (will written 1767, d ca 1776; son of Benjamin) in Edmond's will. Nicholas Drake (b ca 1745) enlisted in the NJ Militia in 1776 in Burlington Co and then in the NJ Line of the Continental Army in 1778, being listed as of Burlington Co and/or from Somerset County. Nicholas Drake appears on the Somerset Co Tax Rolls during the Revolution until 1815. He applied for and was granted a Rev. War pension in 1818 in Morris Co where he apparently lived until until he died in 1828 intestate; Morris Co Surrogate's Office files have no listing of heirs or widow, Joseph Dickerson, Jr. was appointed administrator. Since Dickersons have married Drakes this may be a connection or a coincidence. Nicholas stated in 1818 that he was a laborer but ailing, 75 years old, he had a wife who was 45, and had nine living children, all but one of which were gone to the "Western Country". In 1794, Nicholas Drake and Thomas Drake enlisted in the NJ ! Miltia for the Pennsylvania Insurrection (Whiskey Rebellion) in Monmouth Co and were enrolled at Trenton. The NJ State Archives has original muster roll but it is of no help. Age 49 may be a bit old for putting down rebellions as a private but he probably got married about then too. Has anyone come across evidence that this is one or two or three Nicholases? Or who his children were? Thanks, Ro.
