The comments by Carolyn Wilcox and Judy Gyllenskog caused me to review the data on the eighth child of William A. Autry and Mary Campbell listed on p. 240 and 330 of our book, Descendants of Cornelius Autry, Immigrant, of Edgecombe County, and Neil Culbreth of Sampson County, North Carolina, and Allied Familes. I assembled the entire Chapter 4, the descendants of James, the son of Elijah, the son of Cornelius the Immigrant, using information from several family historians. As with the rest of the book, neither Mayo nor I made any attempt to document these, although we did list information where available to resolve problems. Several years ago I had received data from Don Heflin and perhaps others that the eighth child was Durgan Autry, b. 1827, married Susan Hedges. But the others who submitted family groups felt that all their information listed the eighth child as James, married first to Susan__, then to Rebecca __ . As noted on p. 329, this seems to be based on the censuses of Obion and Lake Counties, TN, and Scott Co., AR. I tried to contact Don Heflin, but all letters were returned and I could not obtain any further documentation from the other genealogists. With the publication deadline looming, it seemed best to list I.A 8. James and show Durgan as an alternate. There does seem to be evidence that there was both a Durgan and a James, with similar DOB and similar wives names. Whether these are the same or different persons is not apparent. Knowing how often the Autr*ys changed their names, it could be the same person. Perhaps others have additional documentation to resolve this question. If James moved to Scott Co, AR, by 1880, it would place him adjacent to his brother and my GGF, I.A.2. John C. Autry, who is buried Sebastian Co, AR, as shown on p. 276. Scott/Logan county are next to Sebastian Co. and on the OK line of western Arkansas. There are so many James, John, Alexander et al., that it is helpful to have a less common name like Durgan! I hope this explanation helps a little in resolving this question. Robert Autry Brooks <rab55@aol.com>
