Jim, were are your Awtrey's from? I am searching the Ortery/Orterry name and it is said that there is a connection with the Autry name, but I have not found one yet. The only thing that I have found was my 2nd Great Grandfather James F. Ortery listed in the 1880 Illinois Census as Autry. We do not know his parents names to go back any further. The name William is listed as his father's name and unknown for his mother on his marriage register, but it is said that he did not know who his father or mother was. I have been able to track him from the 1870 to 1920 census all in Illinois, most documents giving South Carolina as his birthplace with a couple listing Georgia. Beings you have found records with the Ortry/Ortery spelling I was wondering if we could compare locations if your Awtrey's were from Illinois or South Carolina.
