In one of the many AUTRY-D Digest which I have received in the past couple of weeks, there was someone who questioned the existence of William Autry as a son of Cornelius. I've tried to find that Digest but not successful. From what I recall they were referring to the original Cornelius Autry rather than the Cornelius who married Nancy Eaves. Chapter 6 of Mayo Bundy's & Robert Autry Brooks' book, DESCENDANTS OF CORNELIUS AUTRY, as well as some portions of Chapter 1 which lists out various census information, makes note of early deeds found in North Carolina. Based on the information in this book, I have obtained a copy of a couple of the deeds from Pitt County, NC which show that William Autry held land in the 1760s and has land transactions with John Autry. There are still a couple of other deeds which I need to obtain from Pitt County when I have the time. There are books in NC libraries which are called ABTRACTS OF DEEDS PITT COUNTY, NC which also show the information and one may be able to obtain sufficient data from an interlibrary loan. There are several volumes of these books and one would want the information from the volume that covers 1760s probably 1763. In the DESCENDANTS OF CORNELIUS AUTRY book, it is stated that William Autry was deceased by 1790 as he does not appear in the 1790 Sampson County Census or 1790 Cumberland County Census where many of the Autrys that stayed in NC resided by 1790. The book indicates that Rachael Autry who is in the census as head of household was William's wife. One thing that needs to be checked is I believe that Chapter 1 of the book does show a William Autry residing in Pitt County, NC as of 1790 census. If my recollection is right, I do not know why the book assumes that the William, brother to John and son of Cornelius, original immigrant, is decease- unless it is based on the age. Until I saw that 1790 Pitt County Census info in the book, I had thought that William might have been killed in the Revolutionary War and I have looked hard for this possibility but found no proof.
