His death was reported to Governor Handley by a letter written by Elijah Clark on February 8, 1788. The letter stated that Captain John Autry was killed by Indians near Skull Sholes on the Oconee River. Charlotte The book Hero of Hornet's Nest, a biography of Elijah Clark by Louise Frederick Hays published 1946 by Hobson Book Press, Cynthiana, KY contains several references to the service of Captain John Autry. Chapter XIV, p. 207 mentions that Captain John Autrey was killed by Indians at Skull Shoals (Georgia) . The footnotes on p.347 quote a letter from Elijah Clark to Gov. Handley Feb 8th, 88 asking for amunition(sic) and mentions .... "Saturday last Capt. John Autrey was killed by the Indians, near Schel-sholes on the Oconee River...." . The name John Autrey (Autry) appears three times in the index. This appears to be substantial verification of the service and circumstances of the death of Capt. John. I am fortunate to have a personal copy of this book and thought it might throw some light on this subject. Most of the time, I just stay busy with my many family lines that I am researching.
