Hi guys, Great to see some activity on this list again. I am especially interested in the corrections to the Autrey Book written by Bundy & Brooks mentioned because I am still trying to identify Cornelius and Nancy (Eaves) Autrey's children for the book I am compiling on the ancestors and descendants of Bartlett Eaves. Nancy Eaves was Bartlett's oldest daughter. Identifying the children of Cornelius Autrey and probably Nancy (Eaves) Autrey has been a real challenge. A letter written 1 July 1939 at Waco, Texas, by Cornelius' great-grandson, James Henry Autrey to M. Blair Autrey, identifies 12 sons and four daughters for Cornelius: Abaslom, "went to Caddo Parish, La.;" Alexander, "went to Alabama:" Elijah, "went to Alabama;" John, "went to Mississippi," Enoch, "do not know;" William, "went to Georgia;" George, "went to Texas;" Jacob, "went to Georgia or Mississippi;" Thomas, "went to Louisiana or Texas," Mike or Micajah, "went to Texas;" James, "went to Alabama;" and another son whose name he could not recall; Mrs. Downing, Calhoun County, Ala.; Mrs. Meharg, Calhoun County, Ala.; Mrs Yeager, Perry County, Ala.; and Mrs. Griffin. Bundy & Brooks identify 12 sons and three daughters: Absolom, born 1802; Polly, born 1804; George W., born 1805; Alsira/Elvira, born 1807; Alexander, born 1808; (---), born 1811; Elijah, born 1813; John Henry Autrey, born 1814; Enoch Autrey, born 1815; Charity M. Autrey, b. 1816; William Autrey, born 1816; Jacob William Autrey, born 1817; Micajah, born 1818; Thomas, born 1819; James Henry, born 1819. I have added Bartlett E.(Eaves?) Autrey, born about 1805 in North Carolina. I also think a good case can be made also for the addition of Alsista Autry, born about 1803/04 in North Carolina; Elizabeth Autrey, born about 1809/10 in Georgia; and Commodore/Cornelius Autrey, born about 1819/20 in Alabama. I also think a case can be made for E.(Elijah?) B. Autrey, born about 1828 in Alabama, although I have speculated that he was possibly Cornelius' grandchild, son of Bartlett E. Autrey and a possible unknown first wife. Censuses taken of Cornelius Autrey's household in 1830 and 1840 also suggest other children. I would be most grateful if some of you can clear up some of the mysteries. To recapitulate the information I have collected on the possible children of Cornelius Autrey: a. Absalom - Born 11 April 1802, according to his gravestone. Went to Caddo Parish, La., according to James Henry Autrey's letter. There is excellent evidence to support the conclusion that Absalom was the first son of Cornelius Autrey, including the fact that he may have been named after Cornelius' father, although he went to Union Parish, La., not Caddo Parish. b. Alsista - Born about 1803/04, North Carolina, according to the 1850 & 1860 censuses. She married Starling Ruffin Price 1 Feb. 1823 in Bibb County, Ala , a period when church records reveal that Cornelius Autrey could have been in Bibb County. Starling and Alsista had moved to Perry County, Ala., by 1830 when they were recorded in the census there as was Cornelius Autrey and his family. The Price family moved to Benton (later Calhoun) County, Ala., by December 1833. Cornelius Autrey moved to Benton County later. (see the entry for Alsista Autrey #) c. Polly - Born ?, A Mrs. Meharg, daughter of Cornelius, lived in Calhoun County, Ala., according to James Henry Autrey's letter. A Polly Autrey married James Maheage(?) (probably Meharg) 23 Dec. 1821, in St. Clair County, Ala., a time when Cornelius Autrey appears to have been living in Bibb or Perry County, Ala. The 1820 St. Clair County, Ala., census records only A. Autrey, with 2 females over age 21 and 1 female under the age of 21 in his household; and H. Autrey, with 1 female over age 21, probably his wife, and 3 females under 21 in his household. It seems more likely to me that she was one of their children. Mrs. Meharg lived in Calhoun County, Ala., according to James Henry Autrey's letter. I have found a James Meharg in several Calhoun County census records: · 1860 - James Meharg, age 59, born in South Carolina, is married to an Elizabeth, who is listed as age 55, born in Tennessee. · 1870 - James Meharg, age 69, born in South Carolina, is married to an Elizabeth, age 67, born in Kentucky. · 1880 - Elizabeth Meharg, a widow age 76, born in Kentucky, is listed in the household of her daughter and son-in-law. d. Bartlett E. - Born about 1805, North Carolina, according to the 1850 census. Bartlett Eaves was bondsman when Bartlett E. Autrey got a marriage bond to wed Nancy Buttler 11 May 1833 in Marengo County, Ala. It seems reasonable to me that Cornelius would name his second son after his father-in-law. Also, Bartlett E. Autrey named his apparently oldest son Cornelius W. Autrey. e. George W. - Born about 1805/05, in Georgia or North Carolina, according to census records. Went to Texas, according to the James Autrey letter. A George Autrey, age 30-39, was recorded in the 1840 Perry County, Ala., census. And a George Autry, age 45, born in Georgia, was recorded in the 1850 Rusk County, Texas, census. He could have been Cornelius' son but he also could have been his nephew because Cornelius may have had a brother named George. It seems to me, that if the ages reported on censuses are correct, both Bartlett and George could not have been Cornelius' sons unless they were twins. And I think Bartlett was more likely Cornelius' son. f. Alsira - Born about 1806/1807, North Carolina, according to census records. Although I have not personally seen the record, I have been told that Cornelius Autrey gave his permission for her to marry Bird Griffin, whom she apparently wed in February 1824 in Perry County, Ala.. So she appears definitely to have been one of Cornelius' children. g. Alexander - Born 1808, according to Bundy & Brooks; went to Alabama, according to Bundy & Brooks and the James Henry Autrey letter. I haven't been able to find an Alexander who could have been Cornelius child. h. Elisabeth - Born about 1809/10, Georgia (1850 Perry County, Ala., census) Married Brian/Briant Smith ca 1827. James Henry Awtrey, Cornelius' son ,called Brian/Briant Smith brother in a letter to brother-in-law Bird Griffin. So she appears to definitely be one of Cornelius' children. i. Unknown daughter - Born about 1811 and married ? Yeager, according to Bundy & Brooks. James Henry Autrey's letter also identified a Mrs. Yeager as one of Cornelius' children, but I have not yet found her. j. Elijah - Born 16 July 1812 in Edgecomb County, N.C., married Amaritta Catherine Wesson 13 July 1840 in Benton County, Ala., and died 29 June 1861 in Pike County, IL, according to Bundy & Brooks Went to Alabama, according to James Henry Autrey's letter. If Elijah was actually born in Edgecomb County, N.C., then it is unlikely that he was a child of Cornelius Autrey because Cornelius and his family had apparently moved to Georgia by 1810 and they had certainly moved to Georgia by 17 Jan. 1812 when Cornelius Autrey swore he witnessed a transaction in Jasper County, GA. k. John Henry Autrey - Born in 1814, according to Bundy Brooks. A John Autrey, son of Cornelius, went to Mississippi, according to James Henry Autrey's letter. I have not been able to identify a John Autrey who was a son of Cornelius Autrey. l. Charity Mai - Born about 1814/1815, Georgia; (1850 Calhoun County, Ala., census) Married Thomas J. Downing 18 Nov. 1832, St. Clair County, Ala. so she was evidently the Mrs. Downing listed as a daughter of Cornelius Autrey in James Henry Autrey's letter. She lived in Benton/Calhoun County, Ala., until she moved to Texas about 1868. She was probably the female, age 16-19, listed on the 1830 census of Cornelius Autrey's household. m. Enoch - Born 1815, according to Bundy & Brooks. An Enoch Autrey married Susan Downing 26 April 1828 in St. Clair County, Ala. (ancestry.com). but it is unlikely that a 13-year-old male could have married in Alabama in 1828. So either the birthday is incorrect or there are two different Enoch Autreys. In any case, I have been unable to identify an Enoch Autrey who was Cornelius Autrey's son. n. Female - Born 1816-1820, according to the 1830 census of Cornelius Autrey's household. o. William - Born 1816, according to Bundy & Brooks. Went to Georgia, according to James Henry Autrey. If William was indeed a son of Cornelius Autrey, then he was most likely born in Georgia, but I have not been able to identify a William Autrey who was a son of Cornelius Autrey. p. Jacob William - Born 1817, according to Bundy & Brooks. A Jacob Autrey, son of Cornelius Autrey, went to Georgia or Mississippi. according to the John Henry Autrey letter. A Jacob Autrey married Lizzie E. Smith 8 Dec. 1856 in Benton County, Ala. I have not been able to identify a Jacob Autrey who was a son of Cornelius Autrey. q. Micajah/Mike Autrey - Born in 1818, according to Bundy & Brooks. Went to Texas, according to John Henry Autrey's letter. The only Micajah Autrey that I am aware of in Texas died at the Alamo. The ancestors of that Micajah Autrey (1794-3/6/1836) have been well researched; he was the son of Theophilus and Elizabeth (Greer) Autry. r. Thomas - Born 1819/20, according to Bundy & Brooks. Went to Louisiana or Texas, according to James Henry Autrey's letter. I have found no Thomas Autrey who I could identify as a son of Cornelius Autrey. s. Commodore P./Cornelius - Born about 1820, Alabama. He may be the male, age 10-14, listed on the 1830 census and the male, age 20-29, listed on the 1840 census of Cornelius Autrey's household. t. Female - born 1821-1825, listed on the 1830 census of Cornelius Autrey's household u. James Henry - Born 1822/1825, Alabama, according to census records Went to Alabama, according to James Henry Autrey's letter. He was probably the male, age 5-9, listed on the 1830 census. and the male, age 15-19 listed on the 1840 census of Cornelius Autrey's household Evidence suggests that he was definitely Cornelius son. v. E.(Elijah?) B. Autrey - Born about 1828, Alabama, Was he the male under 5 on the 1830 census of Cornelius Autrey's household? If so, where was he in 1840? Was he Cornelius Autrey's son or the son of Bartlett E. Autrey?
Hello, Could you please take me off of your mailing list. My Autet ancestors (spelt Autet, Authé, Auté, Hauté, Authier, and Hauthier were from France. The Autet name was given to the town of Autet in the Franche Compte which is only a few miles from Autrey les Gray. I was there in September of 2001 and saw all of these towns and cities of Autet ancestors. I have not found the connection, as of yet, to the Autry line in the USA so for now please discontinue the emails. Thank you, Cathy jejoyce@texas.net wrote: > Hi guys, > Great to see some activity on this list again.
