    3. Hi Diane -- All of the War of 1812 service and pension records are at the National Archives in Washington, DC. 1. [AUTRY] Autry's Listed in Index for Republic of Texas Claims
    2. jmautrey
    3. The Index to Republic Claims on Microfilm http://www.tsl.state.tx.us/lobby/rc/index.html The Republic Claims series includes claims for payment, reimbursement, or restitution submitted by citizens to the Republic of Texas government from 1835 through 1846. It also includes files relating to Republic pensions and claims against the Republic submitted as public debt claims after 1846. The records include supporting documents such as vouchers, financial accounts, military records, receipts, notes, or letters. These historic records from the Republic Era have been microfilmed to preserve the highest image quality, and the entire series has been meticulously indexed by staff in the Archives and Information Services Division. The Republic Claims series consists of four groups of payments made for services rendered during the period 1835-1846. These groups are the Audited Claims, Republic Pensions, Public Debt Claims, and Unpaid Claims. Because the actual Republic Claims are extremely fragile, access to the records is restricted to high-quality microfilmed copies of the files. This Online Index provides an alphabetical list of indexed names with corresponding microfilm Reel and Frame numbers where the indexed name appears in one or more Claims files. The microfilm reels are available through Interlibrary Loan and, to view in person, at the Genealogy Collection of the Texas State Library and Archives Commission. Microfilming and indexing for the Republic Claims project were made possible by two generous grants from the Summerlee Foundation. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Jo Autrey jmautrey@email.msn.com Dallas, Texas

    2. Evelyn Autry
    3. Discussing the Autry name on the Autry Net brings to mind an amusing instance that happen to my husband and I while searching information for the Bundy and Brooks book. We met a distant cousin and she told my husband that she had a warm feeling for his grandfather because she used his Civil Army record to become a member of the Daughters of the Confederacy. The only problem was his grandfather was never in the army during the Civil War. We found the record of another man by the same name that was in the Confederate Army but he was from another part of Tennessee. Apparently she used this mans Army service record thinking he was our grandfather. Instances similar to this and other problems that we encountered in gathering information on the family has made us more forgiving toward misinformation and errors that we find in genealogy books. Perfection is impossible but we need to make ever effort to verify our information. Evelyn Autry

    1. [AUTRY] Family Research
    2. jmautrey
    3. I am just happy Dr. Bundy printed his works, it has helped untold hundreds to find a place to begin their research and to be able to fill in gaps in their own research. All information from any source needs to be verified before adding to personal files. It is often possible to contact the submitter or contributor to obtain more information. Mistakes and omissions are common in works, and if everyone who ever published a family book waited until it was perfect, most of the genealogical libraries would be empty. Research is done as well as can be done, family members are given lengthy times to send in their information, and proof-reading is done very painstakingly before sending to the printers. The information is only as reliable as the family members who submit it. Often word does not get to everyone about a book being compiled and not every family member has the opportunity to submit their own family genealogy. I have been researching my husband's family since 1980 and yet his own siblings haven't given me the information on their own children and grandchildren, yet complain when they see my work and their family lines are incomplete or missing.. By joining together and comparing notes we are able to help each other find our families and this list is the great place to do this. I appreciate everyone submitting information for comparison and sharing information which they have found which isn't connected to their own research but might be helpful to others. Mayo Bundy and robert autry. And what really has me furious is the fact, I know who my grandfather was, I spoke to him and I was present when my grandfather died. The person who has put the lineage on the internet wants to take the word of a totally stranger over the word of a living person. Plus the fact that one of the sons is still alive of Minnie MAe Autry... this does shows you that this might that many whole gospel to the autry linage might be in error in many places. 1. [AUTRY] Re: Autry spelling
    2. Concerning the spelling of the Autry name, I think Jo Autrey's comments are excellent. Mayo Bundy in our book refers to the early spellings in the NC records. The census records are of little use because the census takers were barely literate and the people giving their names were illiterate. On p 2 in the book there is a reference to an even earlier Autry referred to in NC records as "Autray". Since no one knows how or whether he is related to Cornelius, Mayo just listed him. The commonest odd spelling is probably Otery, which I suspect came from the Southern pronunciation which often stretched one word out to several syllables.I know because I still do so! Another interesting spelling that was mentioned on the AutryNet some years ago is that of Altree-it sounds perfectly logical if you speak it fast enough. There are probably a few more yet undiscovered. At least, this is not as hard as those of my ancestors whose names had the German umlaut translated to English. Robert Autry Brooks

    2. jmautrey
    3. Sounds like the same merry-go-around topic of the spelling of names on documents and how reliable those documents are again.:) Tenth verse, same chorus. I can find documents with various spellings on our own Autrey name but what does it prove when we have more documents with the name most generally used and on grave markers? Not even death certificates are guaranteed correct , nor are birth certificates or census records. My own birth certificate is incorrect, but my parents never took the time to correct it and now I haven't bothered as well...and probably won't due to all the paper work involved in it....anyone researching me is going to have to be more than a detective...Joe has an uncle who has an incorrect death certificate...when anyone looks for him, they will have a difficult time as it shows he died the day he was born at the age of 82! The family knows the certificate has errors, but they haven't changed it, guess they won't now as it has been several years since his death.. These errors are in today's records....how much easier for records of so long ago to be questionable when you consider all the possibilities of how they became that way. We can only go with what we find in their time period for how they were recorded. Jeannie McDuff Murphy, in the book "Absalom and Elizabeth Autrey and Their Descendants with a Section on Thomas Norris", page 174, obtained a copy of documents and has painstakingly transcribed and printed a section on Cornelius Autrey, 1720-1747, Granville Proprietary Land Office, Entries, Warrants, Surveys 1748 -1763 S. 108. 271 North Carolina Archives To see a copy of this document as it is transcribed and typed: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~jmautrey/absalom/cautrey1720.htm Even within this one section of records, the name is spelled Autrey/Autry. To see more documents, you are invited to review: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~jmautrey/absalom/aeautrey.htm Click on the Absalom Autrey Elizabeth Norris section on the top left of the page Since none of us were there when the first A* was spoken, written,or drawn into being, there is no proof that is absolute as to the "correct" spelling, given the different branches of the families, different locations and time periods. Today's records can be witness to this observation. I would believe it is possible there are many ways a name can be spelled during the history of time, and our individual spelling is just one of them, and it can change at any given time according to the times and the people recording it. I try to concentrate on finding my family members as they used their name in their time period, based on the combination of all known records, including family bibles, letters, and such as memories of the elders of the family. This is also one reason one must go from oneself backwards, not just jump in somewhere and try to prove lineage from someone to the present. The farther back one researches, the more likely the name will change and changes many times. When researching documents and sources, I use all variant spellings to avoid overlooking vital information to my own research. 2. Andrea, children of Cornelius Autrey spelled their name differently. Alsira was Autrey, and James H. and his descendants spelled their name Awtrey. Since Cornelius had such a large family, there could have been a son or sons who spelled it Autry. Mildred
