    1. [AUTRY] Corrected Information on Rosa Lea Autrey Walker Obituary
    2. jmautrey
    3. A family member contacted me this morning and gave me corrected information for the services Wednesday of Rosa Lea Autrey Walker, of Texarkana, Bowie County, Tx. "Texarkana Funeral Home and the service is at 2:00 p.m. tomorrow in the Chapelwood Memorial Gardens Mausoleum." The information I was given and passed on was graveside services at another cemetery in the area, which was incorrect. Rosa died yesterday, Jan. 24, 2000, not 1999. Sorry folks, still not used to 2000.:)

    3. Martha Ann "Mattie" AUTREY, da. of Absalom and Elizabeth (NORRIS) Autrey, was b. 1843 in Perry Co., Ala. She married Abraham R. REED in 1873 in Lincoln Parish, La. He was born 1842 in Kentucky, the son of Jonas and Susan (DYKES) REED. Abraham REED and his first wife, Celia, were living in Texas in 1869 when their son, Albert N. REED, was born. No other information on this family. Abraham and Martha had six children: Sarah E., Susan Adealia, Spencer R., Ida, Abraham and Mitchell B. I have very little information on this branch of the Autrey family and would like to hear from anyone with information which you can share with me. The only information I have on this family is from the "ABSALOM AND ELIZABETH AUTREY AND THEIR DESCENDANTS With a Section on Thomas Norris" by Jeanne McDuff Murphy and myself. I am referring to Absalom AUTREY, b. 1802 NC, who moved to Ala. with his father, Cornelius Autrey, and married Elizabeth NORRIS in 1826 in Ala. They started their huge family of 15 children in Ala., their last son, Charley Henry, was born in the new home they built when they moved to La. in 1847. Elizabeth HILL was the sister of Nancy HILL, b. 03 Jan 1793 in Jackson Co., GA who married Jacob AWTREY, b/o John. Jacob AWTREY/ AUTREY married Eliza HILL, b. 1802 in Franklin Co., GA (and another sister) after Nancy died in 1852. No children that I know of by Eliza. They died leaving 3 minor children who were in Murray Co., GA with their Uncle Isaac AWTREY/ AUTREY. The 3 children were made wards of their uncle Isaac AUTREY/ AWTREY until 1842 when Isaac was sick and just before he died. The 3 minor children were Sarah AWTREY, b. 04 Apr 1824 and married Drewry Alvin EUBANKS in abt. 1846 when they went to CA for the gold rush; Isaac AWTREY, b. 19 Apr 1826 and living with Drewry Alvin EUBANKS and his sister Sarah in the 1850 Murray Co., GA census and with Alvin's brother William Pinkney EUBANKS in the 1860 Greene Co., AR census (listed as age 40 in error); and George Washington AWTREY, who was made a ward under the guardianship of Drewry Alvin EUBANKS in 1849 since Alvin was his brother-in-law. George Washington AWTREY was in Greene Co., AR later also and died there. He married 3 times and had several children. Sarah died sometime after 1900 in Polk Co., AR. She had gone to Comanche Co., TX in 1900 to live with one of her twin sons named Jackson Nebraska EUBANKS, but returned to Polk Co., AR probably about the same time as one of her grandsons, Jerome Pennelton EUBANKS returned there from Comanche Co., TX and another of her sons Chaste C. 1. [AUTRY] Fwd: [ROSS-L] Census facts for 1999
    2. Ann Keng McIntyre
    3. Census Chronicles America's Changes Census Chronicles America's Changes By RANDOLPH E. SCHMID= Associated Press Writer= WASHINGTON (AP) _ The nation had one-fourth the people and none of them had ever flown the last time the calendar rolled over to double zeros. Highway accidents were rare. Married women stayed home. Television and computers were the stuff of fiction. With the 20th century nearing an end, the Census Bureau has chronicled just how much America has changed during these 100 years. To begin, there are a lot more of us: more than 270 million Americans today compared with 76 million in 1900. But divorces have skyrocketed more dramatically than the population, up almost hundredfold, from 200,000 to 19.4 million. And the women who stay married aren't staying home. In 1900 there were 800,000 wives in the work force. Now it's around 34 million. These and hundreds of other changes are detailed in the Census Bureau's 1999 Statistical Abstract of the United States, being released Monday. ``Some of the numbers are truly amazing,'' Census Director Kenneth Prewitt said. Thanks to improvements in medical care, life expectancy of Americans has shot up. In 1900, a typical man could expect to die at age 46; a typical women, 48. By 1997, life expectancy had reached 74 years for men and 79 for women in 1997. The number of Americans aged 65 and up grew from 3 million to 34 million. Death rates were cut in half, from 17.2 deaths per 1,000 people in 1900 to 8.6 in 1997. Influenza and pneumonia, for example, killed 202 out of every 100,000 people in 1900. By 1997, the rate had fallen to 33. Transportation took off, too. In was Dec. 17, 1903, when the first sustained powered airplane took to the sky at Kitty Hawk, N.C., traveling 120 feet in 12 seconds with a single passenger. In 1998, commercial airlines carried 614 million passengers over thousands of miles. On the downside, there were just 36 highway traffic fatalities in 1900 compared with 41,967 in 1997. Talking about communications, the 1920 census was the first to count telephones, and found them in 55 percent of households. This reached 94 percent in 1997. It was not until 1930 that the census asked about radios, and 4 in 10 households had a one. The government stopped asking in 1970 because nearly all households had at least one radio. Television did not become widespread until the 1950s and computers only in the past few decades. Just 9 percent of households had a TV in 1950; today it tops 98 percent. In 1900, high-speed mass communications meant daily newspapers, of which there were 2,042 in the United States. By 1998 that had fallen to 1,489. Americans remained a restless lot this century _ as in the one before. In 1900, 60 percent of the people lived in rural areas and 40 percent lived in urban areas. By 1990, 25 percent lived in rural areas and 75 percent were in urban areas. Other ups and downs: _Immigration up: Between 1901 and 1910, 2 million immigrants came from Italy and 50,000 from Mexico. Between 1991 and 1997, 1.8 million came from Mexico and 54,000 from Italy. _Household size down: The average American household in 1900 included 4.8 people; in 1998 it was 2.6 people. _Education up: In 1900, 11 percent of all 14-to-17-year-olds were enrolled in high school; in 1997, more than 93 percent were in grades 9-12. _Government collections up: The U.S. government had $567 million in receipts in 1900. In 1999, the government took in $1.7 trillion. The largest budget deficit of the century was $290.4 billion in fiscal 1992; the $9.5 billion surplus of 1999 was second only to the $11.8 billion surplus in 1948. _Stock market way up: Standard and Poor's 500 composite stock index for 1900 was 6.2, rose to 26.0 for 1929, fell to 9.0 for 1933, and was at 1,085.5 for 1998. ___ The 1999 Statistical Abstract is available from the U.S. Government Printing Office, $39 for the softbound, stock No. 003-024-08841-0, by calling 202-512-1800 or the National Technical Information Service for $34, stock No. PB99-965801, by calling 1-800-553-6847. ==== ROSS Mailing List ==== Also post your Ross queries on the Ross Genconnect board at: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/FamilyAssoc/Ross ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
