    3. Males disappearing after 1860...? Try the various indices of Confederate soldiers and you will probably find that some of them died in the war. Most Confederate soldiers served in units raised within a few miles of their homes. If you find a possible match by name, you can look into where the unit was raised for some confirmation. Any who look fairly definite can be further confirmed by getting an entire copy of their Confederate service record. Those are spotty as to what is documented but especially for soldiers killed early in the war they may have family information, because wives and parents often applied for the soldiers unpaid enlistment bonus money or back pay. Note: It is not unusual for a man to join a unit across the state line if he lived in a border county area. 3. I was reading a tour book for my next trip to London, when I ran across a church called the "Ottery St. Drake". So, of course, I looked it up! Here's the information I found about the town it's in (and boy, that surname sure sounds similar, doesn't it?) The page I found that on is at http://www.eastdevon.net/Ottery/history.htm The town name originated from the first manor house occupied by the Canons of Rouen (1061-1337), named 'Otrei'. It wasn't until 1207 that "St Mary" was added to the place-name in honour of the town church. Ottery was soon to became a thriving market town, by charter of Henry III. I'm going to try to look up the Canons of Rouen and see what I can find. (anybody want to guess where I'm going on my next trip to England? :) ) -- Andréa, Queen of Nothing

    3. Thank all of you for the wealth of Autry resources listed in your replies. I am optomistic that I will eventually find the origins of my Jacob T. Autry b 1814 -1817, SC d GA, listed 1880 census Floyd Co., Georgia. He has children named Amanda, John, William, Enoch, Seda/Ceda, Senna/Cenna, Frances Marion, and Emma. Amanda and John were b in SC William was b 1846 in GA so it can be assumed that Jacob moved to GA between 1844-1846. If these names are familiar to anyone please contact me. P.S. Does anyone know why I can not find my original post on the Autry-L? _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

    2. Re these inquiries, I assume that all who are from the Cpt John Autry line are familiar with the original Autry genealogy book by Mahan Blair Autry of Corsicana, TX. He travelled all over the country gathering information. Many of the descendants went to CA and some to Ark and, of course, to TX. His son, Dr. Frank Autry, told me once that he felt he went into every cemetery in the country with his father. Frank, a dentist of Corsicana, is now dead . Blair's book got V Mayo Bundy interested in writing the first Autry/Culbreth book, although he felt that Blair had made some mistakes, especially in confusing Cornelius the Immigrant with Cornelius the son, et al. I think M Blair Autry's bood is availaable very reasonably from Higginson Book Co., Salem, MA Robert Autry Brooks

    3. This is entirely speculative, but my 3-great grandfather John Autry son of Captain John Autry supposedly had two large families, one in SC with Betsy Rorie and the later one in Sumter Co, GA with Barbara Rebecca ("Bubby") McMillian widow of James Murphy. He used many of the same names in both families. This John P. could be a son of one of his male children born in SC, who I have down as Joseph, David James, Bethuel, and John. 3. Being an "adopted" member of the Autry clan, I've taken to putting this side of the family on the back burner in regard to my genealogy. The Autry family I'm attached to is from Marlow, OK. My dad is Eldon W. Autry, he had a brother Leon that's just about the most I've uncovered. Thought I don't know the maiden names of Ada or Mildred, I do know their birth and death dates and I know Mildred was from AR, but I don't know what part, nor do I know where Ada was from originally, and I don't know the name or birth and death of the father. If any of you Okies are in the Marlow/Duncan area, I would appreciate your help. ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! 3. Today I found a note that my mom wrote (dated "1/9" which I take to have been 1976) about an E.J. Autry... who she also called John English Autry and said that my great great grandfather John English Autry was his grandfather... She said that this E.J. Autry died of a heart attack in South Africa in December 1975 and that the information came via a phone call from E.J.'s sister Gussie Mae who had hear from E.J.'s wife in South Africa. Mom's source was the wife of my great uncle George Washington Haire, who was also a grandson of my great grandfather John English Autry. Other than mom, Uncle George, and his wife, I have no earthly idea who these people were nor where to fit them into the family tree. I note that mom often confounded names... making one into another literally, when it was just similar. There is no reason for me to believe that this man's name was either English John or John English... <G> Any clue would be appreciated. RW
