In any of the Autry information, is there any mention of a Matilda Autry, born about 1811?? She is my great grandmother, married a Jackson/Andrew Jackson/ or A. J. Henley in about 1830. Not sure of location, but they were in Arkansas in 1840's when my great grandfather, Samuel Henley, was born. I had been in contact with someone about her about 6 weeks ago, but lost lots of information when changing computers. Several emails that I had saved got 'lost'. I was wondering if scanning it would be a viable solution? Also, if you need any help, I could probably pitch in a little in scanning or typing. Thank you for the compliment on typing, but I only typed most of Chap 4-and I did use the computer for that, but not with index associated. Cousin Mayo had collected Autry/Culbreth info for 60 yrs and put out two prior books on the Autrys. He typed this one on his "$3 portable" -- literally -- at least, that is what he told me he paid for it. He would type and cut & paste until 2 a m . And he was 82 at that time. He had more energy than I do. So it is no surprise that there are mistakes! That is also why the index had to done separately. He hated to waste space so he put in pictures and poems wherever he could. He said he would not live to see the book published. I did not believe him, but he was right. The tribute in the front of the book was obviously added for that reason. I could never have completed the book. He loved his Autry cousins. He was descended from an Autrey on both sides of his family and so, in the Southern vernacular, he was his own cousin. That is evident in the references to the Autry and Culbreth marriages. In fact, I did not think it necessary, but since we were writing this book more for the Autry line, he rewrote the chapters with Culbreth/Autry marriages and moved them to the Autry lines from the Culbreth lines. And all on his $3 portable. And we were collaborating from NC to AZ, although he never waited on me--I moved too slowly. Wonderful memories and I love to pass them on. Robert Autry Brooks

Unfortunately, I sold all my copies. It was published in 1996. I did send my last copy to Higginson Book Co, in Salem, MA. You may know of they, as they are well known genealogy ublishers. It is not copyrighted, so they can reproduce it. It runs to over 1100 pages and I am told will cost over $100. See the note I wrote before this one for a little more detail. Robert Autry Brooks
The Mahan Blair Autry is available from Higginson Publishers in Salem, MA. They are on the internet and well known publishers of genealogy books. I have seen it but don't have a copy. I think it is about $40. Mayo had some doubts about its accuracy but that is true of all books because one cannot document all the info sent in. I don't have any more of the "Cornelius Autry, Immigrant" book. We did give copies to several libraries, esp in TX , Ark, NC and TN and OK. I included some corrections and additions in the last ones. I sent one of the last copies to Higginson, but it is over 1100 pages and I am told will cost over $100 to copy. Andrea Autrey is working at putting some of it on line, but I don't know if any is available. There is also a book on the Absalom Autry line, by Jeanne? Murphy and Jo Autrey. If you are interested in this line, I can send you Jo Autreys address. Hope this helps. Robert Autry Brooks

I would like to buy the book, Descendants of Cornelius Autry, and would like to know how to order one. Thanks, Bothop@aol.com
I am interested in obtaining the books you mention here - both the one you wrote and the one on the John Autry Family. Could you tell me where I could get them, or at least who the publisher is so I can order them from there. I haven't done any real research, but I have been trying to gather all the information I can from all parts of the family. I have a good deal, but there are pieces missing all over the place and I am hoping these books can help. Regarding the question of Dolores re John Baptist Autry and RWs comment, it is always hard to identify one of the Autry's when the line from the Immigrant Cornelius Autry is not known. I have checked Chapter 3, which is the Cpt John Autry line in the book which I coauthored with V. Mayo Bundy, DESCENDANTS OF CORNELIUS AUTRY, IMMIGRANT, OF EDGECOMBE COUNTY, NC, etc. Page 168 lists John English Autry (1827 to 2-18-1877) as the third child of John Autry Jr by the second wife, Mrs. Barbara Rebecca McMillan Murphy. It does not list any children, so RW has more data than given in the book. Most of the information in this chapter came from the well known book on Cpt. John Autry, by Mahan Blair Autry (1964), which was probably the first "Autry family history" and is widely available. Other informants for this section are listed as Jack Cox, History of Sumter Co., GA, and the John Autry Family by Carolyn Autry Joyner and Joe Grant. If the John Baptist Autry sought for is not from this line, this will not help. The book index is limited and middle names are not listed. There are so many John Autry/Autrey/Awtrey/Ottery/etc. that finding the right one is a challenging task-but an interesting one. Robert Autry Brooks

My 4th great was Sarah AWTREY, the sibling just younger than Clarissa. Sarah was born 04 Apr 1824 and married Drewry Alvin EUBANKS in Murray Co., GA. They had two younger brothers, Isaac and George Washington. I have seen that Elizabeth died 26 Jan 1851 in Calhoun Co., AL, although I don't know what proof there is of that. Dolores... Is there a connection to who? At what place or places are they known to have lived in Georgia? Do you know how they learned a living or other pertinent facts? What are their exact birth and death dates if you have those, and if not, approximate ones. Always: Who, what, when & where! My 2-great grandfather was John English Autry. He was from Sumter County, Georgia, and his father was John Autry of Sumter County. This John Autry is thought to be a son of Captain John Autry. After Captain John Autry was murdered and scalped by Creek Indians on the banks of Richland Creek near Scull Shoals on the Oconee River on 2 February 1788, his widow disposed of his lands in that area and apparently moved to South Carolina. As I understand it, John Autry is thought to have grown and raised a large family in SC before moving to Sumter County, Georgia. Then he married my 3-great grandmother Barbara ("Bubby") Rebecca McMillian (McMillan) the widow of James Murphy, and had a whole 'nuther family in Sumter County, Georgia, where he lived to be over 80 years of age. John English Autry married my 2-great grandmother Mary McQuien (McQueen) and served in the 64th Georgia Infantry in the Confederate Army. I am not sure that they stayed in Sumter County. I don't find them in the 1860 census there or anywhere else and I have never found a marriage record for them... but in about 1869 they moved to Decatur County, Georgia, and he died there soon after from consumption (tuberculosis) contracted on military duty. The thing about John Autrys is that they were thick as fleas on a hound. Every line has them all over it. Someone may know the specific place in one of the lines for a John Baptist Autry, but I don't. It won't help you find John Baptist Autry, but if you are interested in more detailed history on some of "my" line of the Autry family, see: http://pone.com/ts/rw000.htm RW DOE4SURE@aol.com wrote: >My gg grandfather was John Baptist Autry m to Martha Moore, their daughter >Elizabeth A. My gg grandfather was John Baptist Autry m to Martha Moore, their daughter Elizabeth A. Autry m Sacker Dubberly were my g grandparents. John and Martha were married in Georgia. Do you think there is any connection? Dolores
There may be a connection. I am trying to get documentation to prove this line. Family history says that my ggg grandfather was John Baptist Awtrey married to Elizabeth Hill. Jacob Awtrey's bible just shows him as John Awtrey. Another researcher says he was John A. Awtrey and married twice: #1 Elizabeth HIll, #2 Martha Moore. Do you have a list of the children of John Baptist Awtrey and Martha Moore? My gg grandmother was Clarissa Awtrey. Some researchers list her mother as Martha Moore. According to my records she was born in 1822. Elizabeth Hill Awtrey died in 1832. I also have a John Manning Awtrey born in 1834 and O.P. Awtrey born in 1850. John Manning Awtrey's mother had to be someone other than Elizabeth. I believe O.P. is not John Baptist Awtrey's son, maybe a grandson. --- DOE4SURE@aol.com wrote: > My gg grandfather was John Baptist Autry m to Martha > Moore, their daughter > Elizabeth A.
