    3. Here's how that situation turned out with that pirate thing. I got the impression from this that Ancestry doesn't really care about this issue. Kan I sent the joker an e-mail demanding he remove the list containing my work from the tree. And now I will take it too you. I want everything he put on that contains any duplication of my work off the WFT. Also I have another list with my name that I can't seem to remove, 1463162. I would like that off also. Once this matter is settled to my satisfaction, I will discontinue all association with the WFT. Thought since we have several people active on the Autry line I'd ask to see if anyone has a Lycurgus Autry (born 1856 in Ohio Co, Kentucky) moved to Butler Co Missouri then to Little Rock Arkansas known children were Roy & Blanche Autry. My grandfather Charles L. Autry was named after him but would only use the inital L. Thanks Karen jklmca@csi-net.net

    3. The following messages were posted on earlier mailing lists and I would like to know if anyone has any information regarding the Alexander mentioned, who apparently had marital problems, and more than one wife......also a daughter named Mary Polly who married a Faught. This is my line of Autry's and I would sincerely appreciate any information you may have regarding. ---- From: Gentry <gentry@hal-pc.org> To: jimmy.b.cornett@MCIONE.com Subject: Re: Awtry Date: Tuesday, March 09, 1999 7:00 PM Hi, Good to hear from you again. Saw a Des Moines snowstorm on the weather last night and wondered if you were long gone!! My research has been somewhat splintered recently, as I began to get discouraged on the Autry line, and somewhat on Fords. I did digging back into Gentry and Allen lines, which didn't make much progress either. So now I'm feeling a bit like a dog chasing its tail. That is an interesting note from Terry, and I think he may be wiseing up. I've had feedback from him before in which he rather assumed his Alex was son of Capt. John. At least, now he says he's not for sure. Seems like we found something in church records that indicated a problem that Alex had with wives. I'm wondering if he married Margaret/Peggy before divorcing Martha. And left SC and that church for KY as a result. But the dau in no. KY is also confusing. Would have a hard time finding this now as my files are in a mess. Hope you are back to straighten this out soon!! Later, June >> ---- June: I had forgotten how close I am now to the where Mary/Polly Awtry and Faught got married in northen Kentucky. That will be one of the first things to investigate when I get back to looking. I would bet with all the lawsuits that Linda found in Ohio, ole Alex probably had some up here too. --- PS I apologize if anyone gets ths message twice. I sent it out yesterday and apparently it did not go out.

    1. [AUTRY] William Autry
    2. Pat J. Autry
    3. In one of the many AUTRY-D Digest which I have received in the past couple of weeks, there was someone who questioned the existence of William Autry as a son of Cornelius. I've tried to find that Digest but not successful. From what I recall they were referring to the original Cornelius Autry rather than the Cornelius who married Nancy Eaves. Chapter 6 of Mayo Bundy's & Robert Autry Brooks' book, DESCENDANTS OF CORNELIUS AUTRY, as well as some portions of Chapter 1 which lists out various census information, makes note of early deeds found in North Carolina. Based on the information in this book, I have obtained a copy of a couple of the deeds from Pitt County, NC which show that William Autry held land in the 1760s and has land transactions with John Autry. There are still a couple of other deeds which I need to obtain from Pitt County when I have the time. There are books in NC libraries which are called ABTRACTS OF DEEDS PITT COUNTY, NC which also show the information and one may be able to obtain sufficient data from an interlibrary loan. There are several volumes of these books and one would want the information from the volume that covers 1760s probably 1763. In the DESCENDANTS OF CORNELIUS AUTRY book, it is stated that William Autry was deceased by 1790 as he does not appear in the 1790 Sampson County Census or 1790 Cumberland County Census where many of the Autrys that stayed in NC resided by 1790. The book indicates that Rachael Autry who is in the census as head of household was William's wife. One thing that needs to be checked is I believe that Chapter 1 of the book does show a William Autry residing in Pitt County, NC as of 1790 census. If my recollection is right, I do not know why the book assumes that the William, brother to John and son of Cornelius, original immigrant, is decease- unless it is based on the age. Until I saw that 1790 Pitt County Census info in the book, I had thought that William might have been killed in the Revolutionary War and I have looked hard for this possibility but found no proof. Pat Autry, wife of descendant of William Autry

    2. There were so many people in TX, that more books went there! And somany Autry's there helped with it as you will see. A cousin in Ft Worth took one to their library, and one went to Dallas, and to the Alamo in San Antonio, and to the big one in Houston, and to the Rice U library, which incidentally has a collection of papers on the ?? Autry there, descended from Micajah. Hope this helps. Robert Autry Brooks

His death was reported to Governor Handley by a letter written by Elijah Clark on February 8, 1788. The letter stated that Captain John Autry was killed by Indians near Skull Sholes on the Oconee River. Charlotte The book Hero of Hornet's Nest, a biography of Elijah Clark by Louise Frederick Hays published 1946 by Hobson Book Press, Cynthiana, KY contains several references to the service of Captain John Autry. Chapter XIV, p. 207 mentions that Captain John Autrey was killed by Indians at Skull Shoals (Georgia) . The footnotes on p.347 quote a letter from Elijah Clark to Gov. Handley Feb 8th, 88 asking for amunition(sic) and mentions .... "Saturday last Capt. John Autrey was killed by the Indians, near Schel-sholes on the Oconee River...." . The name John Autrey (Autry) appears three times in the index. This appears to be substantial verification of the service and circumstances of the death of Capt. John. I am fortunate to have a personal copy of this book and thought it might throw some light on this subject. Most of the time, I just stay busy with my many family lines that I am researching. 3. Charlotte, In Wilkes Co., GA probate records and in Sept. 1783, Thomas Bankston was named administrator of the estate of Simon Awtry, deceased. Roy White of Salt Lake City, a descendant of both Thomas Bankston and Simon Awtry, wrote: A deposition by Simon's grandson, Spencer R. Bankston, given in July 1846, Jasper Co, Miss., in connection with a pension application by the widow of Jacob Kelly wherein Spencer R. relates how Jacob Kelly had told him how he (J.K.) "fell in company with my Grand Father old Simon Awtry" during their Rev. War service. I have never seen a copy of the above mentioned deposition, but Roy White saw it. Meryl R. 2. When reading the Autry/Culbreth book--or any other--you have to watch carefully to see what is documented and what is not. In our book, I tried to make it clear in the intro that this was usually opinions obtained by Mayo over 60 yrs, sometimes conflicting. I tried to give the origin of the info if available, including the name of the author-who may or may not be living! As always, documentation is the name of the game in genealogy. Maybe that is what distinguishes it from family history. And there are books written on Documentation! If you are dealing before 1850 particularly, documentation is often not possible. Then, as now, there were probably many people who did not want to be found! Robert Autry Brooks

    3. I am still looking for more info on Gustavus Adolphus Autry's (son of George Monroe Autry) second family. His wife, in 1920, was Winnie, age 26 (he was 57 at the time). His son, Gustavus, was 4-1/2, and his daughter Majorie Rose was 2 months....according to the Brown Co., Texas census. Gustavus was my great-grandfather, and my grandfather and his offspring never wanted to know about this second wife and family. I do.

    3. Meryl, I am unaware of a Simon Autry in the Revolution but if you have information you would be willing to share I would be very appreciative. I found that Captain Alexander Autry's name was listed on a Battle of Kettle Creek monument erected by the DAR along with Elijah Clark. The monument does not list John, Jacob or a Simon. I am wondering why their names are not listed. Does anyone have any ideas?
