    3. Thank you Robert for your comments about the name origins! I have tried somewhat to champion a Scottish/Irish/English beginning for our ancestors and still believe it to be the right direction to be pointed in. I have one spelling almost identical to the one you proposed except it has Mac in front of it. There was a Roland MacAughtrie in Kirkcudsbrightshire Scotland in 1199! Rehardless of how you spell that one, its still MacAutry! My best always, Marshall Autry

    2. Otery/Ottery was a fairly common spelling of Autry in the South particularly. Can't you just here those folks "there is old Mr Otery"? As you know many of these people could not read and write, and the census takers were not much better (like today, probbly anyone they could find to work, and politically appointed??) The second marriage of my GGF John C. Autry was found in Crawford in 1848 in a newspaper as marriage of Rev. John C Otery--the court house records all burned and it was 150 yrs before anyone found the information. I always wondered if the original spelling was not Aughtry, and I think that is the spelling in the Scottish church records (on CD, and only a couple of listings). It sounds so British!! 3. Looking for information on Henry Washington Autrey, who died in 1924. He had a son named Cornelius Powers Autrey, apparently named after the earlier ancestor. Cornelius is still living, so I am seeking data only on Henry. Sincerely, Ron Webb

Incidently, I have ordered a second copy of your book and Blair's from Higginson that I plan to donate to the Louisiana State University Library in Baton Rouge in the name of my Grandmother, Flora Autry Taylor. I don't believe that anyone will ever find Cornelius on a Ships Manifest because I do not feel that he was the original immigrant.. From the timeline - (and it is simple speculation), it appears that when Edward Attore arrived in Virginia in 1650, his descendant(s)/brother/cousin ???? remained in that area. Namely the Alexander Autry who died in King William County ca 1706. By 1740, Alex Autray was in North Carolina. Normal migratory route. I believe Edward, Alex, Cornelius are all the same line based on location. Arrived first in Virginia, then migrated to the Carolina's. As I said, pure speculation! Is it possible that the Captain Autry mentioned 1585 (Sir Walter Raleigh) could be the original immigrant.? That would prove interesting as the story of the Lost Colony /Croatoan is very interesting itself. 2. The Autry summary is very concise. There were obviously were other Autry's as Mayo Bundy noted, and he and others have looked for their descendants. But the only one who seemed to have documented descendants is the one Mayo called "Cornelius the Immigrant". And even some of his children as noted in the last chapters are not documented well. What we need is a documented arrival time and mode for Cornelius or whomever immigrated, but so far there is a dearth of information. Robert Autry Brooks

    2. to Janet Shugart: Pope Co has an excellent genealogical society, or two, which have published extensively over the years (my mother and Brooks aunts were charter members-all deceased now). I will look into the 1880 census for their names. Marriages and cemteries have also been published, but births not, as you know. Robert Autry Brooks

    3. Marshall and Jeanine, we are decendants of the same line.: Cornelius,(the immigrant),; James, married to Susan;his sons Elijah,Fredrick, and Alexander; William A. married to Mary Campbell, ; Elijah Henry married to Mary (Polly) Parrish,;Elijah William married to Mary McCauley ;Thomas Leander(brother to Delbert) married to Lou Baxter; William Ennis married to Marye Alma Tomberlin;, William Ennis Jr.(my Husband-who was born in the same house in Tioga TX as Orvan Gene Autry) married to Ara Juanita Cox;William Ennis III, married to Christine Carpenter, and their children Rachael and Kaitlyn Autry. Fredrick and Elizabeth Hampden had 8 children . I found a lot of the children on roots web. Maybe this will give you a place to start. - Most of the family from William A. down are buried and lived in Cooke co. TX at Tioga and Pilot Point. There is 3 cemeteries full of Autrys there- one is Indian Creek Cemetery outside of Tioga TX Cooke Co. ;one is the Masonic Cemetery in the city limits of Pilot Point <Denton Co. TX and one is Mt Zion Cemetery a mile from Indian Creek Cemetery in Tioga. There is another that I have not visited S.W. of Tioga.. Most of the Carroll Co. TN Autry's migrated to this area of TX and Oklahoma, then on to Plainview,TX and Silverton TX. Orvan Gene Autry's mother is buried in Indian Creek Cemetery as is his brother. He was raised from the age of 12 till grown by Thomas Leander Autry about 1 mile from the Indian Creek Cemetery.
