While reviewing my files, I came across this will of Elijah AUTRY. I found it at the Carroll Co., TN USGenWeb Archives website site contributed by Nettie Mae dysfun4@internetni.com : Elijah Autry Noncupative Will. ELIJAH AUTRY NONCUPATIVE WILL Noncupative will of Elijah Autry Deceased made on the morning of the 28th of September 1858 as follows to wit I want Polly to have the home tract of land her lifetime and what the law allows her. She will want it to raise the children on The balance of my property I want sold and equally divided and I want William D. Flowers and William G. Natchitoches Parish, LA - Post Office Natchitoches p. 553 Powers Autry 36 M Laborer on farm 150 Ala Frances Autry 30 F " William 14 M " Sarah J. 12 F " Martha A. 8 F " Mary 5 F " Alabama 3 F " This appears to be the same family listed in the 1850 Perry Co, AL Census as Comodore P. Autery that I believe to be Cornelius Powers Autrey. There are a few discrepancies. CP was 30 in 1850 and Powers is 36 in 1860. Frances is even better, 27 in 1850 and 30 in 1860. The children are more consistent. Ann is not listed in 1860 but would have been about 17, so may have been married. William and Sarah are both consistent. My great-grandmother Martha is listed as 8 in 1860 which is close to the 1851 birthdate that I have. This also strengthens the connection of Henry Washington Autry that was born in Louisiana in 1865 and had a son named Cornelius Powers Autry. Dona Cole
Dona, What you say makes sense, since Conelius's father was also named Cornelius, he very likely would have used his middle name rather than his first name. He is not a Jr., since the middle name was his mother's maiden name. It is had to reconcile the different dates, however. But census reports are terribly unreliable when it comes to accuracy. They were never meant to be an exact record of people names and ages, but rather a statistical tool to distribute tax money, services, and determine representation levels for congress. But if enough of the pieces fit, then I would say that you have a match. And it seems that they do. I was only in Autryville twice with Cousin Mayo, once in the 1980s and once while writing the book. I have to remind people that this was his third Autry book. The first one ca. 1980 is the one that introduced me to Autrey family history. Mayo was a bundle of energy. At 82, he would work on his genealogy until 2 am. And drove to Autryville from his home in Greensboro almost every week end. As to Autryville, it is still a fairly small town about 10 miles east of Fayetteville, NC. It is a rather new town, started ca 1880, so is not where the original family was from. I think an Autry started it to float pine tar down the "river" to the coast. Mayo had lived at Falcon , as few miles away, in his family home where he grew up. Hisfather died when he was young and his mother supported him. As to Autryville, it is best known for the Micajah Autry pageant, which Margaret Jaynes, an Autry descendant, underwrote for years. I enjoyed seeing it in the outdoor arena, but it has ended for lack of more widespread support. A bit of history for today--that I like to recall. Robert Autry Brooks

Bull and Janet, the town of Autryville is in North Carolina and is located about 25 to 30 miles east of Fayetteville on Hwy. 24. It isn't a very large town. Marshall
My late wife Dolores and I had the pleasure of corresponding and meeting Dr. Bundy several times in Autryville. He was a very delightful and insughtful man who was of tremendous help with our research efforts. It gives me great pleasure to see the increased interest in the books authored by him and Robert Autry Brooks. Of great pleasure is the fact that we were included in the book. My line with Isham(Isom) is chapter nine beginning on page 679 which includes a photo of myself and Dolores. Marshall Autry

Myra, you're right, the forward requires a 'rich text HTML' format and that isn't allowed on Family Tree. Thanx. Marshall

No, I don't know much about him, except that he was born in Louisiana July 10, 1865 and died May 24, 1924. He apparently had a son he named Cornelius Powers Autrey, which was also the name of his father. The later CP Autrey is still living. I received an enquiry from a grand daughter of Henry who said I was the only one who listed her grandfather, Henry. I am afraid her enquiry raised more questions than it did answers. -----Original Message----- From: The Taylor's [mailto:ctaylor@accesscom.net] Sent: Tuesday, February 19, 2002 1:42 AM To: AUTRY-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [AUTRY] Henry Washington Autrey Ron, Do you know where your Henry was in 1900, 1910 & 1920? That is an interesting thout re Scotland. Reminds me of my late mother who always said the "Autrys" were French Hugeonots who came to Scotland, then to America. But I always discounted it as a rumor.
