    1. [AUTRY] Interesting thought
    2. Do a search on Google with the name "McAutry" and for good measure, "McAutrey". The results make you think. Unfortunately, white page searches for the US, the UK, Ireland and France turn up nothing. Sometime ago, I found an article about a politician in Ireland named McAutry. Larry Autry

    2. These stories are discussed by Mayo Bundy on P 1 and2 of the Bundy/Brooks edition. He gives some references. He says the one before Cornelius Autry the Immigrant is lised as Alex Autray. As Cousin Mayo said, some of this may be more story than fact. And other parts of it may represent different people--especially since they used the same given names over and over. 3. The Autry Book says "Before we assign all Autry's in America to Cornelius, Immigrant, we need to look at the earlier record in North Carolina Records of Alex Autray. Could it be that he is our immigrant since he was here 16 years before Cornelius? Could Cornelius be his son and/or brother? At a council held at the 5th of June, 1740, Present His Excellency the Governor and the Honorable North Rice, Robt. Halton, Math Brown, Roger Moore, Eleazx Allen, Alex Autray was granted 110 acres in l3eaufort County, Colonial Records of North Carolina, Vol. 4, p. 454) Since an Alex Autray received land sixteen years before a known record of Cornelius Autry receiving land in 1756, it would appear that Alex Autray; not Cornelius may have been our progenitor if he had children. The Cornelius Autry who received land in 1756 may have been his son This recent information is in conflict with the generally accepted and published theory that all Autry's are descendants of Cornelius Autry of Edgecombe County. Alex Autray bad to have been born no later than 171910 have been 21 by 1740 when he received 110 acres in Beaufort Co., the age required to receive land grants. There were no Autry's in Beaufort Co. listed in the 1790 census, but there was a James Ottery (Autry) with a wife and a son under 16 listed in the 1790 census for Beaufort Co. who may have been Alexander's son." -----Original Message----- From: The Taylor's [mailto:ctaylor@accesscom.net] Sent: Wednesday, May 22, 2002 2:48 PM To: AUTRY-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [AUTRY] Huegenot Immigration to Virginia Mr. Brooks, Thank you for the response. 3. AN INVENTORY OF ANTEBELLUM TOMBSTONE INSCRIPTIONS CARROLL COUNTY, TENNESSEE Compiled by Jonathan Kennon Thompson Smith Copyright, Jonathan K. T. Smith, 2002 AUTRY CEMETERY This burial ground is about two miles south of Westport, Tenn. and is about 200 feet east of the Natchez Trace State Park. [It is located on the former Loran Cary farm, whose son-in-law led the present writer to this cemetery] To reach it from nearby Clarksburg, Tenn., turn off State Highway 22 onto State Highway 424W, drive about 3.8 miles to the juncture of Highway 424 and 114; take 114 to a point about .8 mile on the east side of the highway; enter by fence gate, walk about 1.5 mile to the northeast through a long hollow, roughly on the north side of Horn Creek; after crossing a deep ditch, ascend a long hill at the top and edge of which this cemetery is sited. The graves are in a dense pine copse. Advise visit to this site only in winter months to avoid possible confrontation with cotton-mouth snakes and rank vegetation. One grave only is marked with conventional tombstone: ELIZA ANN wife of W. D. FLOWERS Born May 19, 1847 Died Mar. 23, 1878 The graves of Elder ELIJAH AUTRY, who died September 25, 1858 and his wife, MARY PARRISH AUTRY, who died October 24, 1860, are marked by large sandstones. There are at least four conventionally unmarked graves here. Elder Autry was the founding pastor of nearby Mt. Comfort Baptist Church. His obituary in THE TENNESSEE BAPTIST, May 5, 1860, states that he was born in Montgomery County, North Carolina, August 15, 1813; married in Carroll County; was an active member of the masonic order; soon after his twenty-fourth year of age he began preaching (Baptist); that he died from a small pistol wound, September 25, 1858, a son, nearly grown, with considerable persuasion, influenced him to take a small pistol he had along with him to fire for the purpose of securing the stock which he took and put into his pantaloons pocket. He returned late and having lost much sleep and being fatigued, shortly after dark lay down with his clothes on and fell asleep. After the family had all retired, except his wife, she awoke him. Then he had occasion to retire out of doors, having forgotten the pistol . . . was still in his pocket . . . endeavoring to take it from his pocket, which caused it to explode. The ! ball entered the abdomen and ranging up lodged near the lungs. He lingered, suffering intensely, until 2 o'clock Sunday morning. . . ." Elder Autry lingered long enough after his accidental shooting to deliver a nuncupative will before John Parish and William G. Hale, on October 28, 1858, on whose testimony it was probated the next month. He left his farm to his wife Polly, with which to raise his children. (Carroll County Will Book A, page 383)

    3. This is interesting. I have nothing specific on these two, but: In Richland County, SC Elizabeth McGrew, daughter of Peter Alexander McGrew, was born 29 May 1779. She married a David Aughtry. She died 8 Aug 1850 probably in Union County, SC and is buried there. David is supposed to have survived her but date and place of death/burial are unknown. Ellizabeth had a sister named Mary, born about 1791, who married a Cornelius Aughtry..I know nothing else of the origin or further history of this Cornelius. I have supposed that David and Cornelius may have been brothers or cousins and, knowing of the family of Cornelius Autry of North Carolina (the immigrant ?) I have looked for a connection, but have not been able to establish one. I further note that I have not found any other Aughtrys who are not related to David. In fact, all I know of of this spelling are his descendants. There was a court case over the estate of Alexander McGrew in Richland Equity Court, the surviving papers of which provide much information on these people. What is your connection to the Aughtrys? Do the entries you have give any further info? ----- Original Message ----- From: "The Taylor's" <ctaylor@accesscom.net> To: <AUTRY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, April 25, 2002 5:39 PM Subject: [AUTRY] Richland County SC > 1790 Richland Co., SC > Just found an Elizabeth Aughtry/Daughtry (can't read that well) living next > door to a Cornelius Aughtry/Daughtry > > Does anyone have any info on these two? > Thanks in advance > John Taylor > > > ==== AUTRY Mailing List ==== > Have you visited the Autr* genealogy page? 1. Re: [AUTRY] John C. Autry
    2. Much of this info agrees with that in the Autry/Culbreth book that Mayo Bundy and I wrote-- but he did most of it based on his prior two books. The children of Newsom Autry info came from Max and Evelyn Autry in Milam , TN who did a good job. Since the book was published, I have learned that "Rev John C Ottery" married Margaret Ann Mattux/Maddox (Hinds) in Green wood, Ark in 1846 and appears in the 1850 census there. I think the name Marg AnnTaylor is a mistake. She died in TX and he married my GGM Cynthia Ann Weldon. All I know of her is in the obituary which is quoted in the book. There are several other corrections allof which are on the Autry web that Andrea Autrey has already published at this same address. Robert Autry Brooks
