The note was due 25 Dec 1801, but not recorded until June 1809. A John Bankston had a draw in the 1805 land lottery in Clarke Co., GA.(353)-- They lived in Spartanburg, South Carolina at the time of the 1820 Census, before moving to Gwinnett Co., Georgia where John farmed. Joseph Bankston on 5 Apr 1857 in Coosa Co., Alabama. ============================== 22617. ANDREW BANKSTON was born in 1754 in Orange Co., North Carolina. He is believed to be the eldest son of Peter Bankson, and a grandson of Capt. Lawrence Bankson. He was named as a son of Peter in the 1859 deposition by Isaac Bankston.(599) However, Andrew was not named in Peter's will of 1804. Andrew Bankston moved to Wilkes Co., GA in 1777 and served as a private in the Georgia Militia.(229) He described his war service when he filed for a pension in 1834 at the age of 80, and a letter in his pension file reads as follows:(230) "He volunteered in 1779 and served three months in Capt. Autry's Co., Col. Elijah Clarke's Georgia Regt., went in pursuit of the Cherokee Indians and had a severe battle betweixt the Appalacha and the Ocona. He was appointed Captain by Col. Clarke and raised a volunteer company that engaged in several scouting expeditions. In 1780, they marched under Col. Williamson to the siege of Augusta and served three months; shortly after his return home was ordered out with this company in pursuit of Indians, was in several skirmishes, and served three months. He marched with his company to Augusta and stationed there three months; turned out again with his company and served three months guarding the frontiers." Andrew Bankston's pension application stated that he lived in Wilkes Co., GA until 1812, but there is no record of him in Georgia. His name is not listed on any records as paying taxes, or receiving any headrights or bounty lands in Georgia for his military service in the Revolutionary War. He is, however, listed on the 1800 and 1810 Census returns for Montgomery Co., NC where the family had lived before moving to GA. Andrew Bankston recorded land entries in Montgomery Co., NC on 25 Jun 1785 for 50 acres bordering his own land, on the path from his house to James Gray's; 15 Aug 1785 for 150 acres on N side of Long Creek; on 28 Aug 1794 for 200 acres on waters of Long Creek and Watery Branch and for 200 acres on waters of Long Creek and Round Top Branch.(663), pp. 30, 31, 76) He married, but the name of his first wife is not known. Their children may have included a Richard Bankston (see #226X1 and #226XX below), as well as their two known sons, James and Daniel:(34) ================================================= 22622. ELIJAH BANKSTON was born 22 Feb 1765 in Orange Co., NC. It was said that he went "out against the British" as a lad of 16, but he may have been just over 14. Records show that he enlisted in 1779 in the Georgia Volunteers, commanded by Col. Elijah Clarke.(230) His discharge was signed by Capt. Micajah Williamson and Wm. E. Bankston, Clerk of the Superior Court, Butts Co., GA.(34) Elijah and ELIZABETH MORRIS were married on 1 Feb 1787. She may have been a member of the Morris family who lived in Montgomery Co. NC at the same time as the Bankstons. Elijah Bankston received bounty land grants of 287 1/2 acres in Wilkes Co., GA in 1785.(224) However, he moved about frequently, so the family was found in Spartanburg, SC in 1790, then in Walton Co., GA in 1820, in DeKalb Co. by 1830, and in Butts Co., GA by 1840. Elijah was the first justice of the peace of Evan's District, DeKalb County, GA.(356) One of his grandsons was the Hon. James Jackson of Atlanta. Elijah died 22 Feb 1849 in Butts Co., GA. He and Elizabeth had four known children:(357) 226221. WILLIAM BANKSTON, b. 1789, d. 1875, m. Temperance Autrey 226222. ALFRED BANKSTON, b. 1805, d. maybe in 1850, m. Mary Blesset 226223. Female BANKSTON 226224. HENRY BANKSTON, b. 20 Jan 1812, m. Elizabeth Jane Connally ================================================== 22631. THOMAS BANKSTON was born about 1760 in North Carolina. He served in Capt. Autry's Co. in 1778, guarding the frontier in Wilkes Co., GA for 18 months, and fought several skirmishes with the Indians.(230) He was 75 years old when he applied for a pension on 7 Apr 1835. His application stated that his father "David" Bankston moved from North Carolina to Wilkes Co. about 1780. His father was also correctly called Daniel in the same document, and named as the father of Abner, Thomas, and "John" Bankston. The pension was denied, but no reason was given. The earliest record of Thomas Bankston in Georgia is 20 Sep 1783 when he was appraiser of Simon Autry in Wilkes County.(360) A deposition of his son, S. R. Bankston, in 1846 names Simon Autry as his grandfather, so Thomas's wife must have been a Miss AUTRY.(631),, letter of 31 Oct 1999) He was listed on the tax list of 1789 for Greene Co., GA which had been formed from part of Wilkes Co. in 1786.(359) In 1792-94, he owned 300 acres of land in Wilkes Co. and in Warren Co. which was formed in part from Wilkes in 1793. He was appointed Justice of the Peace in Jackson Co. on 15 Mar 1798, and 10 Aug 1802.(618) Thomas Sr. and his wife may have moved to Clarke Co., Mississippi between 1835 and 1840 to be with their younger son. A couple were listed on the Census, both between age 70-80. Thomas and his wife were most likely the parents of Spencer R. Bankston, who lived in neighboring Jasper Co., MS, thought by Vacher(34) to be the son of Daniel and Rachel Bankston. Daniel's son Spencer and his wife Eunice lived some distance away in Hinds Co., MS.(610) Probable children of Thomas: ==========================================

    2. Regarding the discussion of Lucinda Autry, thought to have been a wife of John C. According to my research (and that provided to me by others), John C. was the son of William A., who was the son of Elijah Henry, who was the son of James, making John C. the great-grandson of James Autry. In my line, James Autry was also the father of Archibald C. (making him the brother of Elijah Henry), and George Columbus Autry was the son of Archibald, making him the grandson of James. My George Columbus (my great-grandfather) was married to a Loucinda C. Ballinger (b. 1854 in Fayetteville, Arkansas). This is the ONLY Loucinda I have in my database. 1. [AUTRY] Reverend or Doctor John Autry?
    2. Nan & George Wolf
    3. Hi: If you are looking for John Autry's marriage to Margaret (Mattix) Hinds, he was listed in the Van Buren, Crawford Co. AR newspaper extract as Rev. John Otery. They were married Aug 19, 1846. So, be sure and look for that spelling when researching him. He is Dr. John Autry in some researchers notes. Does anyone know where the doctor in Dr. John Autry came from? It is Rev. John Otery in the newspaper extract of his marriage to Marg. (Mattix) HInds. Washington County is next door to Crawford Co. on the north. Regards Nan 71532.734@compuserve.com

TX and is buried in a cemetery at Green Schools & Church (whatever that means). If he was a Reverend - did he have a church congregation in Denton Co. TX or had he followed the military? I note that Colonel Zachary Taylor also served in TX - I believe it was after he was in charge at Ft. Smith which is in Sebastian Co. AR - just across the bridge from Van Buren, Crawford Co. AR. Margaret's daughter, Margaret Elizabeth, by her first husband David Hinds also lived in TX so possibly Margaret was visiting her daughter when she passed away. Does anyone know what John was doing in Denton TX in 1860 - what is his occupation on the census. Is he a doctor or a reverend? Regards Nan Wolf, descendant of Marg. Note that his first daughter is named Elizabeth - could be his mother or his wife's mother. Do you have Lucinda's mother's name? I am a descendant of his 2nd wife, Margaret Ann Mattix, dau. of Edward Mattix & Eliz. Bond. Margaret was pregnant with her 7th child by David Hinds when he died. Mary was born after his death in 1843. In the 1850 census - her older children are being raised by Grandmother Esther Hinds (need her maiden name) in Van Buren, AR. The younger two Cynthia & Mary are in the household with John Autry & wife Margaret. Also in the house are John's children: William 21 Elizabeth 18 James 16 John 14 George 11 Alexander 9 Eveline 7 (last child by first wife) Margaret 3 (twins - first children by 2nd wife - Margaret Ann (Mattix) Hinds Autry Sarah 3 Taylor 6/12 Cynthia Hinders 11 Mary Hinders 7 In Margaret's first marriage the first two boys were named after their grandfathers and the first two girls were named after their grandmothers. (I can send all the children of her first marriage if it is needed) If Sarah WAS the name of John's first wife - then Margaret was fond of her because she named one of her twins - Sarah. What I find unusual is that she named the other twin Margaret, after herself evidently, when she had already named a daughter of her marriage to David Hinds as Margaret Elizabeth - although this child was called Elizabeth. Elizabeth is the name of Margaret's mother, Elizabeth Bond. Note that on the IGI - Margaret's last name is listed as Taylor. Evidently some researcher not knowing his/her history decided that since Zachary's middle name was Taylor - it must be Margaret's last name. But, Colonel Zachary Taylor (who later became president) was posted at Ft. Smith during this time. The family may have been acquainted with him. The same is probably true of the name of Margaret's 3rd son by David Hinds - Archibald Yell Hinds. The young lawyer, Archibald Yell, moved to Van Buren, AR from Lawrence Co. AR about the same time as the Hinds families. Archibald Yell & wife were married by the same preacher as David and Margaret Hinds - in Lawrence Co. Regards Nan 71532.734@compuserve.com

    2. I assume that Lucinda listed in the same church is origin of "wife". Do not know of the Washington-in 1840 Miss census. I assume he went to Ark after he sold Miss land. Robert Autry Brooks

    2. Re children of John C Autry by first wife: Sarah I have Wm Chris born abt 1829; then Elizabeth abt 1832; then James abt 1834; then John M abt 1836; then George W abt 1839; then Alexander abt 1841; then Evelinne about 1843 (who has a different name in 1860 census?). Richard Autry had another dtr Missouri Ann, that I do not have. I do not recall the 1840 census. The 1850 census of Crawford Co, Ark, is published. He is in Denton Co, TX, 1860 census; I don'tknow if it published. He married Marg Ann Mattix Hinds 19 Aug 1846; listed in VanBuren,Crawford, Ark as Rev John C Otery. Assume Sarah died after 1843, probably in Crawford Co, Ark Robert Autry Brooks
