If you will go to the Franklin County, Mississippi site you will see G.W. land records. There is a John Autry in Huntsville with land before G. W. That might be his father. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Nick Waldron" <rocky@nex.net.au> To: <AUTRY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, November 03, 2003 7:33 PM Subject: Re: [AUTRY] George Washington Autry m Lucretia > Thank you so much.. > I am hitting dead ends all over the place .....every little bit helps.... as > mentioned. Hi guys, I am puzzled by the following statement "In 1799 there was an absolem and alexnder autrey members of the Mars Hill Bapt. Church in oconee co Ga where Elizabeth Autrey's husband, John's mother priscilla hopkins was a member. Have you checked oconee county. Later Absolem came to perry co. al with elizabeth after the death of John in the war of 1812. Absolem and Cornelius Autrey were in perry co in 1830." The Cornelius Autrey who was in the 1830 Perry County, Ala., census married Nancy Eaves in 1802 in Rutherford County, N.C. He was in Jasper County, Ga., by 1811, when he witnessed a deed for one of his brothers-in-law. The Absalom Autrey who is enumerated in the 1830 Perry County, Ala., census, was the oldest son of Cornelius and Nancy (Eaves) Autrey. If you look again at that census, you will note that he was recorded in the 20-29 age bracket. So he had not been born in 1799. Cornelius Autrey's father, also named Absalom, was enumerated in the 1800 census of Rutherford County, N.C., apparently arriving there from Moore County, N.C. He had settled in Alabama by 1820 where he can be found in St. Clair County, Ala., censuses of both 1820 and 1830. All of these Corneliuses and Absaloms can be confusing!! Janey E. Hi, I'm new to the list and wanted to put out feelers to everyone to see if anyone has any info about my family tree. My Father was Noland Celester Autrey (deceased in the early 70s), my Mother's maiden name is McDonald. Both from South Carolina originally, moved to North Carolina in the early '60s. My Grandmother on the Autrey side is Arnita Autrey. Thanks in advance for any help. Also, the spelling in the signature is on purpose, long story. Janie, sorry. I know that in 1799 Priscilla Hopkins was in Oconee Co. Ga with Absolem and Alexander Autrey. They were founding members of the Mars Hill Bapt. Ch there. I believe that Elizabeth Autrey married the son of Priscilla, John Hopkins who was killed in the war of 1812.She received land in Alabama due to this and in 1818 Her daughter Nancy Married John Fisher in Marengo Co. Al. Elizabeth and Nancy and John later moved into Perry Co. Al. where they died after 1850 and 1858. I do not have a place of burial for them but do have records of land that they owned. I plan to get back to the courthouse in Marion to check out the area to see if perhaps they might have been buried on their own land. Thanks for your post. Hi y'all. I'm new to this and my husbands name is Bill Autrey. His fathers name is Roy Autrey born 11/14/24. I don't know much except they come from Oklahoma. If anyone has any info I'd appreciate it. Thanks Karen Autrey
Was your Mary Jane born in 1851?
Could you give us a time frame and a place? Does anyone have information on Mary Jane Autry who married George Miflin Dallas Luker... she is my great grandmother..any information would be great...tonya
Cornelius was a very common Autry name, I assume named after the GF, Cornelius the "Immigrant". Absalom suggests that may been the line. I think manyof that line moved on to LA. Too bad it does not name parent. Robert AB
Hi Betty, I was intrigued by your message: "Robert, on the 1830 Perry Co. Census there is a Cornelius and Absolem Autrey. I don't know about 1840 but will check as soon a I get a chance to go to the Birmingham Library. Our Elizabeth Autrey Hopkins was also in Perry Co. at that time." The Cornelius Autrey in the 1830 Perry County, Ala., census is almost certainly the son of the Absalom Autrey who was born between 1740 and 1750, possibly in England, lived for many years in North Carolina before settling in St. Clair County County, Ala., where he appears to have died after 1830. I have been trying very hard to identify all of Corneliuss children and I have a few gaps, but I think it unlikely that your Elizabeth Autrey could have been one of his children because he had a daughter, Elizabeth, who married Bryant Smith. Cornelius' oldest son, the Absalom listed in the 1830 Perry County census, also had a daughter named Elizabeth. But she was not born until 1832 and married Silas Marion Fuller in 1850 in Union Parish, La. My heart goes out to anyone trying to research the various Autreys. They are maddening. I know far more than I ever wanted to know about them because Cornelius Autrey married Nancy Eaves, the oldest daughter of Bartlett Eaves, my third great-grandfather. I am compiling a book on the ancestors and descendants of Bartlett Eaves. Janey E. Joyce in San Antonio, Texas THIS IS WHAT I HAVE FOR CORNELIUS & CHILDREN AS OF 1830 Cornelius Autry (1830 Perry County, Ala., census: page 62-line 3): 1 male 50-59 (b. 1771-1780) (Cornelius, probably 55-60) 1 female 40-49 (b. 1781-1790) (probably wife Nancy, probably around 45) 1 male 30-39 (b 1791-1800) (unidentified, could not be Nancys son if the age bracket is correct) 1 female 15-19 (b 1811-1815) (probably daughter Charity Mai, about 15) 1 male 10-14 (1816-1820) (son James Henry, about 10) 1 female 10-14 (1816-1820) (unidentified) 1 male 5-9 (1821-1825) (Could this be Commodore/Cornelius P.?, about 10) 1 female 5-9 (1821-1825) (unidentified) 1 male under 5 1826-1830 (probably son Elijah Berryman, about 2) Absalom (about 27, Cornelius oldest son) and Elizabeth (Norris) Autrey, were enumerated on page 62, line 3 of the 1830 Perry County census: page 62-line Starling R. and Alsista (Autrey) Price (about 26, Cornelius oldest daughter) were enumerated on page 5, line 5 of the 1830 Perry County, Ala., census. Bartlett Eaves Autrey (about 25, Cornelius second son) was not found in the 1830 census and I wonder if he was the male age 30-39 listed in Corneliuss household in 1830 and the census enumerator put him in the wrong age bracket. He was in Perry County in 1833 when he married Nancy Buttler. Bird and Alsira (Autrey) Griffin (about 24, Corneliuss second daughter) were enumerated in the 1830 Bibb County, Ala., census (page 161-line 12) Possible child here, say about 22. Bryant & Elizabeth (Autrey) Smith (about 20, Cornelius third daughter) were enumerated in the 1830 Perry County, Ala., census page 62-line 4) Possible child here, say about 17-18
Thanks Robert, I will check to see if I can locate this book.
