Pam Lain cited several sources for Absolom's British service. Another is by Bobby Gilmer Moss, The Loyalists At Kings Mountain, 1998, Scotia-Hibernia Press, 519 Batchelor Dr., Blacksberg SC 92704. On page 4, Aughtry, Absolum (Autery) was commissioned lieutenant by Ferguson in July 1780 and was in the battle of Kings Mountain. Fanning appointed him lieutenent under Capt. Robert Turner on 12 July 1781 in the Randolph County Militia. At the evacuation of Charleston, he went to East Florida. [CO [Colonial Office] 5/560/406; NC State, XXII, 196; Butler, 40. I checked Florida records. St. Augustine is in St. John Co in FL. In 1783, when the Spanish took Florida back from the British, a complete census was conducted and records each householder's decision to stay (and swear allegience to the Spanish King and apparently convert to the Catholic faith) or go to other British territories or elsewhere (sometimes to GA). This census has been partially transcribed and generously placed on the Florida GenWeb site. Neither David Fanning nor Absolom is listed so I am assuming that their section of the census has not been transcribed. David fanning was in Canada by 1784. The reference to Absolom on the Balfour site is found in "Col. David Fanning's Narrative" in the chapter on the death of Col. Balfour and the later section on the descendants of Absolom Autrey. Part of the outrage at Col. Fanning and his men was perhaps due to the fact that Cornwallis had already surrendered and peace terms were being worked out.
Tieing into the discussion on Autry/Autrey origins, in the Index to "Ye Colonial Kinsmen from Plymouth Rocke to York Towne" by Joseph N. Kearney (initial issue, no date), published by Roadmaps-Thru-History Assoc, located in the LDS Los Angeles Family History Center Library, there is a list of Dutch first names and the English equivalent; I am sure similar lists are available on the net. "Cornelis" is the Dutch form of "Cornelius" and "Neeltje" is the Dutch form for "Cornelia". So perhaps the 1801 Marriage Bond reflects that Cornelius called himself "Nelis" or that the name the County Clerk knew him was Nelus. Any one from a Southern family which repeats names across generations can imagine that the Clerk might have known "Nelus" Otry and Little "Nany" Eaves personally under those names instead of thteir real given names. Is there any primary source using "Cornelis" or "Cornelus" that might have been regarded as a misspelling of "Cornelius"? The way the name was pronounced ! may indicate later immigration than the pre-1730s Autrey Brothers and lends credence to Cornelius' father being the immigrant. -----Original Message----- From: Milyel@aol.com Sent: Mar 25, 2004 4:52 PM To: AUTRY-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [AUTRY] Re: AUTRY-D Digest V04 #13 Robin, my great great grandfather, Cornelius Autrey (sometimes Autry), was married in Rutherford County, NC, 9 June 1801, and his marriage was recorded as: Nelus Otry m. Regarding the origin of Cornelius Autry, Immigrant, in the first pages of the First Chapter of the Autry/Culbreth book, Mayo Bundy discusses the origin. Cousin Mayo spent 60 years hunting the origin of Cornelius, but never felt he found it. He does mention that a Capt Autry was in the navy off the Americas in 1585. He also comments that an Alex Autray was in NC 16 yrs before any mention of Cornelius. He could have been a brother, father or unrelated. He also comments on the possible Irish connection. I think Mayo may be correct in that they could have come to England with William the Conqueror abt 1066, since so many French names in GB derive from that. So the mystery goes on. If it solved, I think it will have to be in England/Ireland/Scotland, if it can be solved at all. Robert Autry Brooks

Mr. Harris, If you are refering to my part of the RE:, there was a Cornelius Autrey that came from France with his Brothers, one of them being my line of Autreys, Absalom. The most part of the line was born in NC, and them moved to Kentucky or Tennesse, I belive, can't remember which, Then moved to Alabama where they were the first to cross and settle the river there, and settle in Dubac, Louisiana. Some of the names on your list are familiar, but alot of them I am not familiar with. Familiar: Conelius, Elijah, Elizabeth, John, Soloman, William Page, and Wilcox County, you might want to look into this part of the family, their may be some connections there, I got alot of my info from the Autry webpage, as I took time to read through different links provided by that site. you might want to look into, "The Autrey House" in Dubach, Louisiana, there is alot of info there too, that was collected by the Historians and my family, it is a Historical Monument in Dubach. Our branch of the family! stayed around Union Parish, some in Dubach, Benice, and Farmerville. My dad's siblings settled close by West Monroe and Truxno, all in Louisiana. I also have a Cornelius Autrey in my Absalom Autrey line, and you are correct, it can get a bit confusing at times, because the names Absalom, Cornelius, and William were used so much, but the Cornelius in my bloodline was a the first school teacher in Union Parish, Louisiana. He is my Great x how many ever(LOL) Grandfather, and was one of the son's of Absalom who stayed in Louisiana, the others either went back east, or went to TX., as far as I have found. Thank you. Sincerely, P. Autrey-Hatten Sincerely, P. Autrey-Hatten Janey Joyce <jejoyce@sbcglobal.net> wrote: Both Absalom and Cornelius were popular names with the Autreys. I am unwilling to assume, at this point, that the Absalom Autrey who was a Tory was the same Absalom who probably fathered the Cornelius Autrey who married Nancy Eaves. The Cornelius Autrey in Sampson County is almost certainly from a different line of Autreys. Census records suggest that "our" Cornelius Autrey was born 1775-1780, so was unlikely to have been enumerated as the head of a househole in 1790. The Cornelius Autry enumerated in Sampson County was above 16 and was probably married to the female enumerated with him. He was probably at least 30 in 1790 because Cornelius, Isham, John and Theophilus Autry were on the 1784 tax rolls of Sampson County. By 1784 all North Carolina men age 21 or older paid a head tax. So Cornelius was at least 21 in 1784. "Our" Cornelius Autrey was probably in his father Absalom's household when Absalom and his family were enumerated in Moore County, N.C., census in 1790. I have connected the Absalom Autrey who was in Moore County, N.C., in 1790 with the Absalom Autrey who was enumerated in Rutherford County, N.C,. in 1800 because I found a record of a deed wherein Absolom Autery of "Moor" County, N.C. purchased two tracts of land in Rutherford County from John Leatherman on 15 Dec. 1798. The land was described as 120 acres on Webbs Ceek and 100 acres, also on Webbs Creek. Absalom Autrey sold land on Webbs Creek, Rutherford County, to probable son Cornelius Autrey in 1805, which seems more than a coincidence to me. Incidentally, George Autrey - who I believe to have been Absalom's youngest son although many believe he was Cornelius's son - or someone in his household told the 1880 census enumerator that George's father was born in England and his mother was born in Germany. I think that is interesting, especially when another probable son of Absalom's - Alexander Autrey - came from French and German ancestry, according to his grandson, Benjamin Franklin Riley. In my view, those two bits of information do not conflict. French Protestants began fleeing to England and other countries to avoid persecution in the 16th Century. Some of these refugees and some of their descendants immigrated to the New World. So it is not unlikely that a man of French descent who was born in England ended up in North Carolina. So I also think we must consider the possibility that Absalom was the original immigrant of his line of descendants and was not the son of the Cornelius Autrey who can be found as early as 1754 in Edgecombe County, N.C. and probably died there about 1774. I have looked at many, many records and have only been able to identify two children for that Cornelius Autrey: Isom and Sarah, who married George Vickers. I would love to hear from anyone who has found solid evidence of any other children for him. Janey E. I am a descendant of Absalom Autrey through Charity Autrey and Thomas Jefferson Downing. Query: andrewbalfour.com has published excerpts from Col. David Fanning's Narrative under whom Absalom Autrey served. Absalom was with David Fanning and shot Colonel Andrew Balfour in NC on March 10, 1782 outside his home. The soldiers pursued Balfour into the house and shot him in front of his daughter and sister-in-law after which the women were attacked. At least one of the soldiers was later hanged. Fanning and some of his men escaped to SC. 1. After the war British troops were transported to E. Florida. The oft-quoted British War Office excerpt says "these men were determined to go to Florida". The Balfour site states: After the War, on May 17, 1782 the Act of pardon and Oblivion passed, exempting [Fanning] from pardon in NC. David and his wife were sent to Florida, awaiting deportation to Canada. Did Absalom determine to go to Florida or was it determined for him? Does anyone have the entire War Office Report or the 1782 Act? 2. Given Absalom's very active role in what was regarded as Col. Balfour's murder, was he indicted or refused pardon like Fanning? Was he ever pardoned? Was his land seized as indicated by Deed Abstracts of Tryon, Lincoln, & Rutherford Counties, N.C.: Tryon Co. estates: Book A1 P. 247? Did he work his way across to Georgia and then return to NC? 3. Absalom's son Cornelius is listed in the 1790 Census in Sampson Co NC with 1 woman but his marriage to Nancy Eaves took place about 10 years later. Could he have been living with his mother or a sister while his father was gone? Interestingly, an Autry/Balfour Descendant marriage took place in 1920 (check Balfour site). ==== AUTRY Mailing List ==== Have you visited the Autrey Heritage page? My Grandfather, James Albert Autrey, was a decendent of Absalom Autrey of Dubac, Louisiana, his father was supposed to have been in TX, at some point I believe, and fathered I think two or three other children, which my grandfather did not find out about till he was in his mid 60's, I believe his name was William too, William Robert I think, can't remember, William was Absalom's Grandson I think. That may or may not be possible. I have good documentation back to my 3-great grandfather John Autry and so far as I know my 3-great grandfather John Autry was a son of Captain John Autry... but I've never been very satisfied by the information that I have seen indicating that and wish that I had time & energy to really dig for documentation. That included some spellings that I had never seen! But I think the Autr*y Family Assn Bulletin (no longer published) listed some 40 variations on the back page. The one that I like was omitted. That is: ALTREE. Someone years ago wrote in that they could not find their ancestor in a listing, then realized that there was an Altree. So we have a beautiful new name! And we might include: McAughtry, found in the Scottish church records. Robert Autry Brooks
Autrey was also sometimes spelled as heard to be related to the now disused mathematical expression "aught" (zero)... Aughtery or Aughtry. If you are using a soundex index, some of these spelling are so far apart that they actually fall under quite different soundex codes. Robin, my great great grandfather, Cornelius Autrey (sometimes Autry), was married in Rutherford County, NC, 9 June 1801, and his marriage was recorded as: Nelus Otry m. Nany (Nancy) Eaves. One of his sons spelled his name Awtrey, and that line has consistently used that spelling. Mildred Yelverton
Looking for Autreys can be a real challenge because of the many ways the name has been spelled. It is not unusual to see the name spelled two or even three different ways on a single document. Just off hand, I have seen the name spelled. Autrey Autery Autry Awtrey Awtry Awtery Awtroy Ortra Ortre Otries Otry Ottery Oytry It can be a real challenge to find them in census indexes. Janey E. Jim, were are your Awtrey's from? I am searching the Ortery/Orterry name and it is said that there is a connection with the Autry name, but I have not found one yet. The only thing that I have found was my 2nd Great Grandfather James F. Ortery listed in the 1880 Illinois Census as Autry. We do not know his parents names to go back any further. The name William is listed as his father's name and unknown for his mother on his marriage register, but it is said that he did not know who his father or mother was. I have been able to track him from the 1870 to 1920 census all in Illinois, most documents giving South Carolina as his birthplace with a couple listing Georgia. Beings you have found records with the Ortry/Ortery spelling I was wondering if we could compare locations if your Awtrey's were from Illinois or South Carolina. Hope all is well with you and wish you luck on your Awtrey search. Robin (Orterry) Mohammed JimPend@aol.com wrote: From: Jim Pendergist (JimPend@aol.com) You may want to try a different spelling. I found the marriage license on my Great, great grandfather William Eldridge Awtrey and Martha Ann Ramsey under Ortry or Ortery.
