For over 30 years, I have searched for Margaret Autry Pickens, daughter of John C. AUTRY and Margaret Ann Mattix, to no avail. [Margaret Autry Pickens, twin sister to my gggrandmother Sarah AUTRY Pullen, born 15 Sep 1847 Van Buren township, Crawford co., Arkansas.] She was mentioned in the 1886 will of her father [Sebastian Co., Arkansas], and then I thought she had dropped off the earth. Then a year ago, I emailed an AUTRY researcher, who happened to have last name of PICKENS. Nothing clicked. This year, I recontacted this researcher with no finds. A few weeks later, she recontacted me with possible find. Anyhow, it looks as if Margaret Autry Pickens was hiding in Sebastain Co., Arkansas the whole time. Pretty sure that she is found as wife to A. J. PICKENS on the 1880 federal census. Haven't proved this is my missing 2nd great aunt, but pretty sure it is. Turns out Andrew J. Pickens is distant relative of my email contact, who I picked up off the AUTRY list. My thanks go out to the many researchers who are willing to share information with sources!!! My point is to never give up, and to reach across the ancestral lines when researching. You never know when something will pop up that might not fit with who you are researching at the moment, but may fit later. According to my records, Arizona AUTRY, daughter of William Christopher AUTRY jr and Martha Elvira BERNA, would be the 3rd cousin of Odlin Gene AUTRY. You may already have this info. If so sorry, I have been gone for 2 weeks and just getting caught up. Arizona was my mother's 2nd cousin. So hi from a newly found cousin. I don't know anything about Arizona, but can fill you in on her family, ie ancestors. Arizona Autry is my great grandmother. She married Samuel Tilton Nelson. My father has told stories about going over to his grandmother's home and Gene being there because she was babysitting. I 've already answered you on the Sutton list but I am also interested in the Autrys from Sampson-Cumberland Co. Based on Mayo Bundy's book Descendants of cornelius Autry, I have been able to trace my husband's Autry line to William Autry, one of Cornelius' sons. My husband's "Autry grandfather", George W. Autry is a grandson of James William Autry, brother to the John Autry who purportedly was responsible for incorporating Autryville, NC. If you are related to Autrys in Sampson Co & Cumberland Co, you acquire a copy of the Autry book. It is on the web, thanks to Andrea, but there's nothing like having the hardcopy. ----- Original Message ----- From: <aomegal@intrstar.net> To: <AUTRY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, August 15, 2004 1:12 AM Subject: [AUTRY] Autrys of Bladen, Sampson or Cumberland > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Surnames: Herring,Johnson,Autry,Carlton,Wright,Sutton > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/idB.2ACEB/264 > > Message Board Post: > > I am seeking contact from anyone that maybe a descendant of or researching the Autrys of any of the above counties. > http://allen_omega.tripod.com/autry/ned.htm > > > ==== AUTRY Mailing List ==== > How to unsubscribe from the Autry list: > > Send a message to AUTRY-L-request@rootsweb.com that contains (in the body of the message) the command unsubscribe and no additional text. Hello everyone! I havent written for a while but today I have a treat for all. I just found a really interesting website sponsored by the East North Carolina Joyner Library. The URL is http://www.lib.ecu.edu/ncc/historyfiction/ There is a lot of information on this website, it has online county histories. I checked out Edgecombe and Duplin and each county has at least one history and there is also a book on soil samples for those interested in the type of soil our ancestors had to work with. And what is good about this site is that its actual digitized books so you can print off what you need. Enjoy! -- Sara J.
