You say that Charles is your descendant, and I think he is ours also. Elizabeth (Whittle) was nicknamed Betsy, and she was a seamstress or midwife, something like that and we found our gr gr gr grandfather Westley living with her, no mention of Charles, must have died. I've been trying to put these pieces together now for over 35 yrs. And it still haunts me as to where these people went and who they are. We go to Edgefield/ Batesburg monthly as one of the remaining gr.......daughters live in Edgefield. If you could give me a lead where to look I'll do any research. It's so close like on the tip of your finger, but it just keeps slipping through. Thanks Joni

    2. I was quite interested in this family. I am trying to find the parents of Lula Francis Autry and her sister Anne. Lula was born 1883 and her sister probably close in dates, according to the picture I have. They were both raised by their grandmother - not sure of which side she was on. Lula married Charles Franklin Browning in 1898 in Paragould, Greene Co., AR. If anyone has info on this family of Autry's, I would appreciated it alot. On the 1900 census for Greene Co., AR., Lula states her father was born in AR and mother in TN and visa versa on the 1910 census for Craighead Co., AR. Lula was born in AR, she died about 1913. We have never found her sister Anne/Anna/Annie. If these names ring a bell with any of the children of this Autry, I'd love to hear from you. Thanks - Margaret Pickens

    3. Researchers of AUTRY ancestors who were in Texas during the Civil War, may find the following web site interesting: http://www.tsl.state.tx.us/arc/cif/acname.html Name County Autery, Wm | Bosque Autrey, Mrs | Mclennan Autry, E | Burleson Autry, Jno A | Denton Autry, Miles | Kaufman Autry, Nancy | Kaufman Autry, Mrs | Burleson Confederate Indigent Families Lists (1863-1865) On November 24, 1863, the Texas Legislature passed a Joint Resolution stating that the government pledged "support and maintenance of [the soldiers'] families during their absence from home." In accordance with this Resolution, an "Act to Support the Families and Dependents of Texas Soldiers" passed on December 15, 1863. The Act set aside $1,000,000 annually to be paid the "families, widows, and dependents of soldiers currently serving in State or Confederate forces, or of soldiers killed or disabled in service." Chief Justices of the counties, on or before March 1 in 1864 and 1865, submitted lists of servicemen and the number of their dependents eligible for relief. The County Clerk administered the money distributed to the county for this purpose. Please note that lists were not compiled in every county; those counties are not represented in the index. I am a direct descendant of him and I am convinced beyond a doubt that his mother was Margaret Ann Mattix (Hinds) Autry. There is in existence a letter written in the 1930's by her granddaughter by one of the hinds children (now long dead) in which she confirms all these details. Also I would like to add that John C. Autry's first wife was named Sarah (maiden name unknown) which I discovered in a Tippah County Miss. land sale record for John C and wife Sarah. -Richard Autry

    1. Re: [AUTRY] Zachary Taylor Autry
    2. 12-26-04 I want to say that the comment of Nan Wolf re John C. Autry/Margaret Ann Mattix Hinds is correct. When I tabulated Chap 4 of the Autry/Culbreth book in 1996, I repeated the opinion of some of Zachary Taylor Autry's descendants in TX that her name was Taylor. Shortly after this, the Hinds descendants pointed out the correct name. This is confirmed by the marriage of Rev John C Otery to Margaret Hinds, 21 Aug 1846, as listed in the Crawford Co, AR, papers which have been published. It is complicated by the fact that the names of the apparent step children in the 1850 Crawford Co, AR, census are listed as Hinders/Winders--but it does not look like Hinds! Margaret Mattix Hinds Autry must have died after 1 July 1860 when her name appears with John C Autry in the Denton Co, TX, census; and before 1861 when he married Cynthia Ann Weldon. This date per her obituary and their first child was born abt 1862 per the 1870 Sebastian Co, AR, census. It is still a mystery re the first wife of John C. Autry. Richard Autry has recently found a couple of listings of a John C Autry and Sarah ____. Unfortunately, there are John C Autry's in MO and GA etc. and one cannot tell which one is our John C. And to date, no one knows what the C. stands for. I counted 19 children for John C. Autry, but after 18, who keeps count? And he moved about every 10 years--leaving children scattered all around. Margaret first married a David HInds in 1827 in Lawrence Co. AR. She married 2nd to a Rev. John Autry. Some Autry researchers think that her maiden name was Taylor because she named her first son by her 2nd husband Zachary Taylor Autry. The Autry researchers did not know she has been married previously. In fact, her husband Rev. John Autry was the chaplain for the army post at Ft. Smith where a Colonel Zachary Taylor (later Pres. Taylor) was posted. So, we ASSUME that they named their son after this colonel. I am sending this message to ward off further mis-conceptions about the maiden name of Margaret Ann Mattix in case any descendants of Zachary Taylor Autry use this message board. Rev. John Autry had three wives and a total of 18 children!! His second wife was Margaret Ann (Mattix) Hinds, widow of David Hinds. Her name was NOT Taylor. I believe I have the names of his children by his first wife (or some of them from a census) but we do not know his first wife's name. We know his third wife's name and his children by his 2nd and 3rd wife. Nan Wolf

    1. Nicholas Drake Hunterdon/Burlington/Somerset/Morris/Monmouth Co NJ
    2. Nicholas Drake is listed as the only son of Edmond Drake (will written 1767, d ca 1776; son of Benjamin) in Edmond's will. Nicholas Drake (b ca 1745) enlisted in the NJ Militia in 1776 in Burlington Co and then in the NJ Line of the Continental Army in 1778, being listed as of Burlington Co and/or from Somerset County. Nicholas Drake appears on the Somerset Co Tax Rolls during the Revolution until 1815. He applied for and was granted a Rev. War pension in 1818 in Morris Co where he apparently lived until until he died in 1828 intestate; Morris Co Surrogate's Office files have no listing of heirs or widow, Joseph Dickerson, Jr. was appointed administrator. Since Dickersons have married Drakes this may be a connection or a coincidence. Nicholas stated in 1818 that he was a laborer but ailing, 75 years old, he had a wife who was 45, and had nine living children, all but one of which were gone to the "Western Country". In 1794, Nicholas Drake and Thomas Drake enlisted in the NJ ! Miltia for the Pennsylvania Insurrection (Whiskey Rebellion) in Monmouth Co and were enrolled at Trenton. The NJ State Archives has original muster roll but it is of no help. Age 49 may be a bit old for putting down rebellions as a private but he probably got married about then too. Has anyone come across evidence that this is one or two or three Nicholases? Or who his children were? Thanks, Ro.
