Hello Listers I'm trying to sort out some confusing information about a NZ birth and a NZ death. According to family information, Edward Thomas STEVENS - s/o Richard STEVENS (Uncle Dicky) and Sarah née RASON; wife Ann (Nancy) née LIDIARD formerly LEE - died before the birth of their son Edward John STEVENS. These events would have taken place around Riverton or maybe on Ruapuke or Stewart Islands. The book "Kelly of Inverkelly" (p.174) says that ET died on 8 Jul 1857, six months before EJ was born. "Records of Early Riverton and District" (p.30) says that EJ was born on 8 Jul 1857. This article on EJ also states that his father died six months prior to his birth. EJ was baptised at Jacob's River (now Riverton) on 27 Jan 1858 - info from Ruapuke Registers. A submitted entry to the IGI says that EJ's birth was 8 Jul 1856. As you can see, things don't quite add up. It is some time since I've done NZ research and have forgotton when Registration started. It is possible that ET was buried in Riverton Cemetery - I have no note about the place. The grave of his uncle, George STEVENS snr, who died about 1853, is to be found in Riverton Cemetery. Can anyone help to resolve this puzzle, please? Many thanks. Pam Beaudesert, Queensland, Australia

Hi Pam Edward John Stevens died 21 March 1947 aged 89. That would have his birth in 1858. He is buried at Riverton Cemetery. Edward Thomas Stevens also died in Riverton. I googled Riverton and discovered it has a current population of around 1900 people AND Riverton was the first recorded settlement in New Zealand!! Riverton is in Southland - suggest you try NZSoc of Genealogists Southland Branch who may have some Member interest in this name.
