    3. HBH 1892 September 6 2 Pitcairn Island The last vessel known to call at Pitcairn Island was the ship Slieve Roe, from San Francisco to Dunkirk, which arrived at the latter port of June 1st. Captain M'MULLAN states that when off the island the chief man (named ADAMS) came off and gave him some interesting details of the island. The inhabitants now number 200, and only one death, which was the result of an accident, has occurred there during the past six years. They are happy and contented, oblivious of strikes, alcohol, and the struggle for existence which perplexes the outer world. Without turmoil they quietly possess- -Lands, where, save their conscience, none accuse; Where all partake the earth without dispute, And bread itself is gathe'd as a fruit; Where none contest the fields, the woods, the streams, The goldless age, where gold disturbs no dreams. But even in this Eden there is a crumpled rose-leaf. Some years since a man-o-war presented the island with a couple of boats, which were of great service and were not allowed to rust for want of work. These boats are worn out, and the islanders have petitioned the Imperial Government to replace them. We are sure that as soon as the wants of these interesting islanders are made known they will be supplied from some quarter.
