Hi all, apologies for any cross-postings but I wondered if sks could direct me to where I could find information regarding the the soldiers records and any passenger lists or ships the soldiers travelled on 'down under' of the District Chatham Barracks in Gillingham, Chatham, Kent England, .. I have a person in the 1841 census, occupation 'Soldier' living there - Gerald MURTAGH b. abt 1826 in Ireland. 1849 he is married (in the same district) to Harriet MAPEL and then went to New Zealand. I did read somewhere the great excitement regarding the new ruling that allowed a ratio of 12 wives per 100 Soldiers (as opposed to the old 'six wives' per hundred soldiers) when being posted abroad and it was about 1849 so that may have been the reason for marrying. Neither Gerald or his wife are in the English 1851 census and one of their children Thomas Henry MURTAGH was born in 1857 in Wellington, New Zealand. On his son's marriage details in Auckland NZ 1883, Gerald's occupation is given as 'Painter'. Any help or direction gratefully received. Kind regards, Brenda Hamilton, New Zealand
