Hello Listers I read in "Early Records of Riverton and District" that Richard STEVENS (1802-1889), wife Sarah and children Edward Thomas (22), Sarah Jane (16) and Emma (10) arrived in New Zealand on the "Royal Albert" in 1853. I have just been given information that a Richard STEVENS was buried in Riverton in 1853. It wasn't the father as I have his DC for 1889. However, Richard and Sarah had a son Richard who was 2 years older than ET. At this stage I'm wondering exactly when in 1853 the RA arrived and if there would be a passenger list. It is possible that their son Richard did accompany them and died soon after arrival. Compilers of the article in the book would not necessarily have known about his migration. I'll be contacting a cousin in or near Gore who may be able to check out the exact date of the 1853 burial. I've been sent the name of a centre in Gore which has a new Burial Locator. The family settled in Jacob's River (now Riverton), so would they have come into Dunedin? Any help most appreciated. Many thanks. Pam Beaudesert, Queensland, Australia
Hi Pam Edward John Stevens died 21 March 1947 aged 89. That would have his birth in 1858. He is buried at Riverton Cemetery. Edward Thomas Stevens also died in Riverton. I googled Riverton and discovered it has a current population of around 1900 people AND Riverton was the first recorded settlement in New Zealand!! Riverton is in Southland - suggest you try NZSoc of Genealogists Southland Branch who may have some Member interest in this name. Hello Listers, I'm trying to help an email friend in England She says that Frederick William George FAULKNER served with the AIF in WWI and was awarded the Military Medal in 1917 for gallant leadership at Ypres. After the war, he married Catherine St George, settled in England and later died there, leaving a Will in which his wife is named. The marriage hasn't been found either in England or yet in Australia. I found the following on the Nominal Roll on-line: Frederick William George FAULKNER was a Bank Clerk, single, 19 years, which was, I think, when he enlisted on 12 (another says 19!) Jul 1915, so he was born around 1896. He couldn't have been much younger. His address was 154 Bridge Road, Richmond, as was his father's (initials WG - William George?). The entry had 'Acting Sergeant' beside it - no knowing when this was, but leadership qualities were obviously showing. It also said that his religious allegiance was Congregational. My friend would like to know more about him, in particular something more about his Military Medal, and also when and where he was married. I haven't found any likely birth in any of the States on Aussie Vitals (NSW, Vic, Tas, WA) nor any likely marriage for WG. Frederick is reportedly a grandson of immigrants in the 1800s, so apparently born here. Is anyone able to suggest avenues of finding these things out please? Is there another Mailing List that would be more appropriate? Many thanks Pam Beaudesert, Queensland, Australia
Hi John, Presume you are just looking at the DORN name in NZ. What years? There are men of that name in the South Island and one in the North in 1915 none of them with the christian names you have given and none with occupations as miners.cheers Leo.
Hi Noticed emails regarding arrivals and involvement in mining. My GGF Henry Meyers lost his fortune in Thames and Coromandel gold and silver mining. Anthony Dorn married Jane Woods in Jersey and went to Australia. That is my lineage. Some of his siblings went to New Zealand, Christchurch and Nelson. Have joined NZSG and purchased CD's but nothing about William Dorn, brother of Anthony who died in Nelson. Visited New Zealand north island in October, found several relatives but no Dorn's. Can anyone suggest next steps please? John Meyers Australia
Hi Christine I also have a Kirby in a family line that hasn't been properly researched as yet. My Kirby changed name from Courville and was linked to French settlement in Akaroa (Banks Peninsula, South Island, NZ). Hokitika is a very small town on the West Coast of the South Island. Population 4500 in 2001 Census. No "New Ballarat" in this area but a lot of the Ballarat Victoria Australia miners came across when they heard/thought there was gold in the hills. Tourists still pan for gold in this area (I haven't made it to the "Rich List"!!) Your man from Hokitika, Westland, New Zealand died INTESTATE which is WITHOUT A WILL. The cost of a PROBATE document may or may not give you any further advantageous information, i.e. no mention of children, parents. The example below may be of interest to you or other listers. My grandfathers first wife died very young, leaving four children under school age. Her LETTER OF ADMINISTRATION legal document registered in the Supreme Court of NZ (1918) showed the following: Name of spouse Sworn Statement of value of estate under 500 pounds Cost 3/- (3 shillings, pre decimal currency) Stamp Duty Sworn statement of a witness who knew deceased and attended her funeral (in this case a brother-in-law) Sworn statement of a Lawyer acting for Estate Administration Bond: Sworn statement of monetary worth of each individual administrator for deceased (Affidavit of justification of sureties) A request to provide the Courts with a true and perfect inventory of all the estate, effects and credits of the deceased Grant of Administration to surviving spouse: Sworn statements that spouse had searched all records possible for a Will or testementary writing and been unable to find Confirmation from the Public Trust Office that NO WILL was held by a Government Office Good Luck "Happy researching and sharing" Sandra Murphy Auckland New Zealand NZSG #19772 Researching OSBORNE, BARTON, MEAKIN, GOWTY, RICKETTS, JEFFERIES, JEFFREYS, BEAUMONT, BIRRELL, MCGUIRE The information contained in this email MAY be confidential or legally privileged. Hi Christine, Great to hear from you and your Kiwi ancestors. I found your Mr Kirby of Hokitika and tried to send you the details but your anti spam programe blocked my message. If you could write to me off list so I can reply to you I will send you the details of his probate, which was in 1866. Obviously this is why he wasn't with his family when they moved to the United States. You will be able to write for his will and probate details which will (hopefully) provide more information about his family. It says he is of 'New Ballarat Hokitika' . The miner's from Australia used Australian names when settling mining areas of New Zealand so I am unsure if there was an area around Hokitika called 'New Ballarat' or if he was Australian as in the state of Victoria there is also a 'New Ballarat'. There was a lot of movement between the mining areas of Australia and New Zealand. Hi Brenda -- I'm descended from one of those New Zealander's that came to the U.S. in 1874. The family, named Kirby, came to the U.S. via the port of New York (Castle Garden. The father was a miner in Hokitika in the 1860s. I have never been able to find out anything else about him because he was not on the ship with his family when they came to the U.S. One of these days I hope to make it to New Zealand to see it - it looks like a beautiful place. I was astounded at the number of folk who were on it and had been born in New Zealand (3,148) Mind you, the transcribers got a bit confused as to where New Zealand was and there are some Newfoundland born people who have (New Zealand) noted. Also other places that start with 'New', such as New York or New Jersey. The other confusion was that the enumerators thought that New Zealand was in Holland !! Those NZer's who stated their race was MAORI, were noted as 'Maori, English'... There are lots of AUSTRALIAN's in the 1920 census too. Hello, My name is Joan Powell and I live in Queensland. I have been asked by an e-friend in England to see if I can help trace some of her ancestors. There is an address in my grandmothers old book for a Mrs Agnes Adams, 40 Moody Street , Lower Hutt, Wellington, New Zealand". Annie GREEN married George ASKEW and moved to Australia.
