Hi everyone! My name is Peter and I live in the village of Skelton-in-Cleveland in what used to be the North Riding of Yorkshire in England - right in the middle of Captain Cook country. I've been researching my family history for about four years now and am entirely comfortable digging around in the online sources for the UK. I have recently taken up the "pursuit" of the second husband of one of my great-great grandmothers. His name was James WEDGWOOD or WEDGEWOOD. It has been suggested that he emigrated to Australia. If this is the case it would have happened sometime between Jul 1880, when he married great-great-grandma Emma and Feb 1888 when she married her third husband. The advice I am seeking from this group is as follows: what resources are available online to trace Australian immigrant arrivals in the 1880s? This will be my first foray into "overseas research" and so any other general advice will be most welcome. I realize my search is going to be very much a "needle in haystack" job. One possibility, if he did emigrate, is that he died on the voyage. Looking forward to hearing from some of you. (And if anyone has any questions about my part of the world, feel free to ask them of me) regards, Peter Appleton Researching the following surnames: Yorkshire (North Riding): APPLETON, BOWERS, COCKERILL, EVANS, FAWCETT, LEGG/LEGGE, MASON, WEDGWOOD/WEDGEWOOD Norfolk: BOWERS, BRUNDLE, CALVER/CARVER, MULLENGER/MULLINGER, WOODS Cornwall: ANNEAR Lincolnshire: HOWSAM Suffolk: MATTHEWS Westmorland: MASON My Family Tree website: http://www.tribalpages.com/tribes/pappleton3

I'm trying to find the marriage details of GEORGE CLAUDE (also known as Claude George) WINGROVE who married NORA ELLEN SLATTERY at Auckland about 1922. They had two daughters who must have been born in NZ. GLORIA EMILY WINGROVE born about 1923 and DAWN MERL WINGROVE born about 1925. George was the second son of EMILY THORPE and GEORGE WINGROVE born in Sydney in 1894. He died in Brisbane Hospital Australia in 1934 at the age of 40. It appears from his death certificate that he was either seperated or divorced from his wife at the time of his death and I can't find any evidence of his wife or daughters having ever been in Australia. Any advice or help would be much appreciated as I would love to track down this branch of my THORPE tree but I'm not familiar with NZ research or what is available. Many thanks in advance. On leaving school, he served his apprenticeship as a compositor with the Western Star newspaper in Riverton. He moved to Auckland in 1884 where he met Jane HINCH, 3rd daughter of James HINCH who was deceased by 1885. Herbie and Jane were married in Auckland in March 1885 and their son Herbert Edgar was born later that year, with both the baby and Jane dying the following February. The baby died from Diarrhoea - maybe Jane did too. She was still in her teens with Herbie widowed before he was legally an adult. My quest is this: does anyone know which newspaper Herbie may have worked for in Auckland at that time? I have just discovered - horror of horrors! - that Herbie and Jane's entries are missing from my database. Fortunately I had written a short (one page) story about Herbie and was able to retrieve some of the details. I don't, however, have Jane's birth or baptism, or her date of death or burial. I just have a note that it was shortly before or after baby Herbert Edgar was buried on 4th February 1886. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks. Pam Beaudesert, Queensland, Australia
Hi Pam There is a good website called Papers Past paperspast.natlib.govt.nz. Southern Cross Online coverage: Jan 1850 - Dec 1876 The Southern Cross began as a weekly paper in Auckland on 22 April 1843. In 1862 it became the first daily newspaper in Auckland changing its name to the Daily Southern Cross. The Southern Cross was merged with the New Zealand Herald, which is still published today, in 1876. New Zealand Observer Online coverage: Sep 1880 - Dec 1909 The New Zealand Observer was one of a number of illustrated weekly newspapers popular in the 19th and early 20th centuries. It was first published in Auckland in 1880 and continued, with name changes, until November 1954. Hello Listers We have 'lost' a rellie called Richard HOLTER. He arrived in Port Jackson on 19 Jan 1840 on the "Alfred" along with his uncle & aunt, George & Mary STEVENS (his mother was George's sister), 4 STEVENS cousins, his sister Charlotte, her husband James BONIFACE and their infant son, also James. He was illiterate at the time, aged 18, and a farm labourer. It seems that the men, George STEVENS, James BONIFACE and Richard HOLTER all had employment arranged on Glendon Station in the Hunter River district. In 3 months in 1841, 3 of this family died (James jnr in Feb, Mary S in Mar and Charlotte in Apr). I know that the STEVENS family subsequently (1843) moved to New Zealand, to join John HOWELL, the founder of Riverton, Mary's son by her first marriage. Has anyone come across a Richard HOLTER in the mid-1800s, most likely in Southland, please? Many thanks. Pam Beaudesert, Queensland, Australia
Hello Listers I have a note that there was to be a HOWELL (descendants of John HOWELL, founder of Riverton) earlier this year. Does anyone know if this took place, please? I emailed the contact person for it, to check, but the email bounced. John HOWELL's half-sister, Elizabeth STEVENS and her husband Theo DANIEL, were my ggps. Many thanks. Hello Jim Many thanks for the info. I was also sent a hyper-link to the Archives, so will check it out when next on line. The date you gives shows just how 'out of synch' some info can be. Cheers. Pam Beaudesert, Queensland, Australia
