HB Herald, Thurs. Mar. 8, 1894 The late Mr John MADIGAN, whose death was briefly referred to in our yesterday's issue, joined Her Majesty's service under Sir Hugh GOUGH, and served throughout the Sikh war. He was later sent to England on recruiting service, and while there represented his regiment at the Duke of York's funeral. When the Crimean war broke out Mr MADIGAN's regiment was among the first to be sent to the seat of war. He served during the whole of the campaign, and after the war was over he was sent to Canada. After receiving his discharge he came to New Zealand, and was through the Waikato campaign. He went to New South Wales as a drill instructor. HBH 1892 May 19 William CHISSELL ex Napier to Aus The many friends of Mr William CHISSELL, who, about seven years ago left NAPIER for SYDNEY, will be sorry to hear that has died there at the age of 29, leaving a wife and three children. He was the eldest son of Mr CHISSELL, of Poplar House, and when in Napier was for some time clerk in Messrs SAINSBURY and LOGAN'S office. Whilst there he acquired a good knowledge of shorthand, and upon reaching Sydney that acquirement enabled him to obtain a position in the New south Wales Mines Department, which he entered as clerk. He gradually rose till he was head of the clerical staff, a position he occupied at the time his last illness incapacitated him/ He caught influenza at the end of last winter, and his whole system appeared to become poisoned by it, as he was never thoroughly strong again, and ailment followed ailment, until at length a rheumatic fever set in. This caused heart trouble and ultimately death.

Thank you for sharing your photographs with us Ken.. I can imagine as to how you felt being there... A few years ago, I attended an Anzac Day service at Brockenhurst. Hampshire, laid a wreath there for the New Zealand soldiers who died at the Hospital and are buried there. Thought it was the least I could do, being on holiday in my homeland, and knowing of the burials there. Currently researching the WW1 headstones at Featherston. Wairarapa, sadly 150 soldiers died of influenza in 1918, some served at Gallipoli, some wounded, and returned to NZ to Featherston Camp, and died of Influenza, one soldier, died, his wife and his brother who were caring for him, sadly all died with days of each other and are buried at the Cemetery there. There are over 180 soldiers buried at Featherston. some came from Australia to fight with New Zealanders, some from Scotland. London...etc.. Adele Clareville.NZ
That was interesting Ken, I had a 2nd cousin Donald James MCDONALD who died in Hainaut, Belgium and is buried in the Charleroi Communal Cemetery. The date of his death puzzled me as it was 11 Feb. 1919!! There were Majors, etc. buried with him. I think I have now reached the conclusion that he died of Influenza?? What was he doing in Belgium so many weeks after fighting stopped?? His only other sibling Hilda Elizabeth MCDONALD had died in Christchurch New Zealand in November 1918 a few months before Donald. What an unhappy time for my great Uncle and Aunt. Only my interest in Family History has uncovered these tragedies. Fellow listers - I thought you might be interested in the Anzac Day ceremonies on the other side of the world. I attended the Anzac Day Remembrance ceremonies in Ypres, Belgium on the 25 April 2007. It was a moving ceremony in honour of the fallen of the 1st World War. The events were marked by a joint New Zealand and Australian Ceremony led by the Ambassadors from both countries and some 2000 others present, mostly New Zealanders and Australians. The day started with a wreath laying ceremony at the New Zealand Memorial at Mesen/Messines. This was followed later in the morning by a ceremony at the Menin Gate in Ypres. The Menin gate is the imposing memorial to the fallen of WWI where the names of those who died and have no known grave are inscribed - except for the New Zealanders whose names are inscribed on the memorial at Tyne Cot Cemetery. Those New Zealanders and Australians who had gathered, marched from the Ypres Cloth Hall to the Menin Gate where the ceremonies took place. The "Last Post" was sounded, appropriately, for exactly the 27,000th time and this was followed by wreath-laying by the New Zealand Ambassador, Wade Armstrong and by the Australian Ambassador, Alan Thomas, service personnel representatives of the New Zealand and Australian Armed Forces and those of the public who wished to lay wreaths. This was followed by the playing and singing of the National Anthems of New Zealand, Australia and Belgium. In a speech following the ceremonies, the First Alderman of Ypres, Mr. Lignel, gave a short speech in which he mentioned that remains of those who died in the First World War are still being regularly uncovered - and to give a stark picture of the terrible carnage of that war, he mentioned that only in the past week, 209 further remains of casualties had been recovered. This year is special in that it marks the 90th Anniversary of the Battle of Passchendaele, one of the turning points of WWI and there are a number of special ceremonies being held beginning on June 7, the day of the start of the battle. On the following two web pages, I have attached some photos of the ceremonies: http://www.kmb-associates.com/AnzacDayYpres2007A.htm and http://www.kmb-associates.com/AnzacDayYpres2007B.htm. The pages may take some time to upload because of the number of photos present. If anyone is interested, I have higher resolution copies of the same photos which I would be happy to provide - contact me off list. I also have photos of the memorial at the Tyne Cot cemetery on which the names of those New Zealanders who died and who have no known grave are inscribed on the New Zealand Memorial there. The quality of the stone has declined over the years, and some names are difficult to read. Should anyone be interested in the name of an ancestor there, I will endeavour to find it. Let me know. Ken
HBH 1892 May 18 ADAMS Walter Queensland Obituary Brisbane-Tuesday Mr Walter ADAMS, M.L.A.
Hawke Bay Herald 1892 May 14 Hawke's Bay to Australia Pat and Daniel SULLIVAN, T ALLEN, Waipawa news Three fine young fellows named Pat and Daniel SULLIVAN and T.ALLEN left here several months ago in search of fortune on the other side. All were in good and permanent employment on the railway staff, but, dazzled by the yarns that reached them, they started for Western Australia They landed at PERTH, but as work was not plentiful, and the waged only 6d per day more than they had here, while the cost of living was much higher, they determined to try some new goldfields known as the Merchants, 700 miles distant, and carrying swags of 150 lb each to start with, they eventually reached their destination, and found they had jumped from the frying pan into the fire. Work was still scarce, the climate fearful, and all felt sick. Dan SULLIVAN was the worst, and so ALLEN hired a trap and pair and started to drive him to the bay, where was the nearest town, 300 miles distant. When about half-way, on the 3rd of April, poor SULLIVAN died, and next day he was buried at the station on the road. Allen came on and reached PERTH on the 13th, whence he wrote to some friends here. He says "he is still very bad himself due to climatic influences; that it is a poor country, and there is no work to be had in it, and as soon as he can get the passage money, he will make tracks for HAWKE'S BAY again." It is to be hoped our young men that are discontented will take the lesson to heart and let well alone. Pat SULLIVAN has got some work as an ordinary labourer for the PERTH Harbor Board, and he wishes that he had stayed here.
Thanks Adele, Thats a wonderfully informative and rather disheartening set of facts, thanks so much for posting it. In Auckland New Zealand when the motorway was going through, it went through the old Symonds Street cemetery and remains were removed to be re-interred. Its all very worrying. reading the message about Staten Island.,.. wonder if any of our subscribers realise what goes on in other countries, I heard of a story in London, when they were digging for the Chunnel Terminal in London (St. Pancras) they started to bull doze the old cemetery... remains still there. I got rather hot under the collar and contacted BBC on this message.. and Home Office... in short they had to find a more humane method to carry out the work. Similar in West Norwood, cemetery in London, reselling old plots.. so if you go looking for a family plot. its been resold.. how about messages around the globe then? In short again, the council had to make good the graves they had disturbed... History is being lost in many a cemetery, look here in Wellington, when the powers to be wanted a motor way, and it was to go through Bolton Street Cemetery, where many of our very early settlers lied resting... many now in a mass grave and the headstones have been carefully put in other areas around the cemetery. Latest I heard from London, selling off the space on cleaned Monuments at graves.. reselling perhaps your family's headstone to another burial. Trouble is places like England, they are running out of space for burials. time will come it will all be cremations.. What worried me in West Norwood, lovely cemetery, have seen it on the web as to who is buried there, James Busby, who built Waitangi House. Sir Henry Doulton (of Royal Doulton fame) Mrs Beaton.. cookery lady!! etc.. St Pancras Cemetery was for the French Revolution folk who had escaped to London. Dear Jenny, no its not, the problem is that there is a space before the first letter of the email that you need to write to. You need to copy carefully from the capital S and paste it so it is a valid email address. I have written on the list to explain. Hi Atina, thank you for your support. Unfortunately there is a space before the first letter of the email as pasted below. > to: _SICemetery@aol.com_ (mailto:SICemetery@aol.com) I emailed my letter to SICemetery@aol.com and it didn't bounce. If you notice the email in the copied and posted one that has the 'mail to' in it above - it has a space before the first letter, need to get rid of that, its a typo I think but I noticed it and copied carefully from the capital S, not leaving a space before it. I am tired and think I am not explaining it well but it you use the email that is on the line that starts "I emailed my letter ...." you will be fine. Its very good of you to support this cause.
