Hello Edward Not sure if you're looking for LABONE's only or for Emiley's line in particular (there's also an anomoly with the dates you've given for Brian Edward LABONE). However, I've found a Walter Edward LABONE who married Ada Sylvia STEEN IN 1911. Walter (a retired grocer) died Wellington before 31 March 1953 and his probate was granted 31 March 1953. His Will is at Archives NZ Wellington. There is a possible son or brother, Leonard Harcourt LABONE who was a NZCo. representative who died Wellington 1942. His probate was granted 18 December 1942 and a copy is at Archives NZ in Wellington. Also, there is a possible son of Walter's, Raymond LABONE, a grandchild of Paul STEEN who is buried at Karori Cemetery Wellington, with Paul STEEN. I don't know when Raymond died, but Paul died 5 May 1914 aged 52 years. I would offer to do some more research for you, but I'm in the process of packing to go to UK for a while and do not have time at present. There are a few LABONE's living in Wellington and they may be related to the ones you are looking for. If you'd like to contact them, go to www.whitepages.co.nz for their addresses and phone numbers. Hope this information is of some help. HBH 1892 May 29 Execution of Deeming EXECUTION OF DEEMING [BY TELEGRAPH] Wellington-Sunday The following account of DEEMING'S execution is culled from the Hobart Mercury;- MELBOURNE, May 23. At 10 o'clock this morning WILLIAMS, alias DEEMING, paid the last penalty for the crime he committed. The day was dull and bleak, making the surroundings gruesome. There were a large number of Pressmen present, representing news-papers in all parts of the world. The convict bore up well to the end. He was awake some time during the night until early morning, but he afterwards fell asleep and was aroused at 7 o'clock to have his irons struck off. The Rev. Mr. SCOTT, the gaol chaplain, having been taken ill last- night, the assistant chaplain and the Rev. Mr FORBES attended the condemned man in his last hours. At 10 o'clock the Sheriff presented his warrant to the governor of the gaol, and demanded the body of Albert WILLIAMS, who had been sentenced to death for the murder of his wife at WINDSOR in December last. WILLIAMS was then brought out and led to the drop walking with a firm step, but evidently very nervous. No time was lost in adjusting the noose, and the Sheriff having asked him if he had anything to say or any statement to make, the convict replied, "No, sir, Lord, receive my spirit." The assistant chaplain then commenced reading the burial service, and when he came to the words, "Man hath but a short time to live," there was a click as the bolt was drawn, and the final act in the Windsor tragedy was completed, death being instantaneous. Subsequently an Inquest was held and the usual verdict was returned, that the convict had been duly executed according to law. A large crowd had assembled outside the gaol, and gave brutal cheers on the news being received that the execution had been carried into effect. The prospect of the gallows appeared to have broken the condemned man down towards the end. His rest during the night was fitful and disturbed, but he fell into a heavy slumber early in the morning and ate a fair breakfast. Shortly afterwards the two clergymen attended him, praying and reading with him prior to the hangmen entering the cell to pinion him, he was then on his knees weeping bitterly, and in prayer he exclaimed "Oh, Lord, forgive me for having despatched my wife and children without warning." This is considered an admission that he murdered his wife end children at RAINHILL. The gaol chaplain has made a statement to the effect that he could not make out whether the prisoner was a splendid actor or the subject of a diseased brain, but inclined to the latter conclusion. Only twice did the condemned man show any signs of emotion-once when telling how he killed Emily MATHER, and once upon rising from prayer. The Rev. Mr SCOTT has read every line of the autobiography the condemned man had written, which is full of filth and fantastic imaginings, and cannot see the light of day until it has been rewritten, and which can be only done in such a way as would destroy all its originality. DEEMING'S last letter was written on Saturday (May 21st), addressed to the Rev. H. SCOTT, and begged to tender him sincere thanks for the reverend gentleman's past kindness to him, and expressed a hope that he had always shown himself attentive to the reverend gentleman's teaching. The prisoner continues in his letter: - "I die a fully penitent sinner and a Christian, and I still tell you, as I always have, that I did not Intend to kill my poor Emily, nor did I know myself at the time that I did it, and I can only look on my execution as a murder." The body was burled inside the walls of the gaol at dusk in the evening, in what Is known as the old men's yard, near the bodies of other notorious criminals. A cast of DEEMING'S head and face was taken by a phrenologist.

Hi Sandra, We have gotten the divorce papers on Christopher Bailey and Harriette Bailey. Interesting reading and that is where we found there were two children left with Christopher Bailey when Harriette took the youngest to Sydney. My neighbour only knew of her uncle Bert and no others from the Bailey marriage until we got a copy of the divorce papers. The divorce papers say he was a dairyman and I think at Mt Eden but don't know if he left there but we did find a Christoper Bailey in the 1881 electorl roll as dairyman in Mt Eden and a Christopher and Charlott Baily in the 1893 electrol roll in the district of Franklin in Papatoitoi. I can't remember the second son's name and my neighbour is away this week but I do know that John P would have been born in Ireland between 1861 and 1863 as from the divorce papers we found the marriage date of 1861 in Dublin. If I remember correctly the second son was born in 1865 and Bert was born in 1868. Thanks for your help Linda --- australia-new-zealand-request@rootsweb.com wrote: > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. HBH 1892 May 26 Shipping Rio Janeiro to Aus ports Page 4 Malaria on Board Vessels arriving at Australian ports from Rio Janeiro recently state that the place is in a fearful state owing to the prevalence of malaria. In February last the death rate of 50 to 60 deaths per day. The mortality amongst the shipping in the port is terrible. The Captain of the Carned Llewellyn had two of his team stricken with the disease, but he insisted upon his crew making free use of tobacco as one of the best preventatives from contracting the disease, and the experiment proved very successful, as none of the other members of the crew ere affected. The barque Carleton was not so fortunate, as more than one-half of her crew succumbed to the disease. Yellow fever broke out on board the ship Wandlatta, and only two of her crew were left alive, the remainder having died. Nine of the crew of a steamer lying in the port were taken to the hospital in one day suffering from yellow fever. Men dropped dead in the streets of the city daily, and it was a daily occurrence to see the "dead carts" flying by at racecourse speed, conveying as many coffins as they could hold to the cemeteries on the outskirts. Many of the remains of the victims had to be conveyed to the burial grounds by the relatives or friends who would volunteer to deposit them in the holes dug out for their reception.

Looking for information on second marriage and death of Christopher Bailey. Christopher arrived in NZ in 1863 on the Ganges with wife Harriette and son John P. I know of two more children from this marriage. Harriette left NZ in 1871 for Sydney with youngest son Albert Bailey (actor Bert Bailey from Dad and Dave). Christopher Bailey then divorced Harriette in 1879. I think Christopher married Charlotte Mears in 1879. Would like confirmation of marriage and if possible death of Christopher Bailey. HBH 1892 May 23 DOSSITER SHIPPING NOTE The barque Acacia from HOBART arrived at DUNEDIN last week with her flags flying at half-mast, the cause being that a young fellow named DOSSETER, a native of HOBART, 13? Years old, had fallen from aloft while lessening the foretopsail and at once disappeared from sight. The vessel was immediately brought to, but nothing could be done. Young DOSSETER was highly respected and liked by all with whom he came into contact.
