    1. [AUSTRALIA-NEW-ZEALAND] 1840's - District Chatham Barracks in Gillingham, Chatham, Kent England MURTAGH MAPEL
    2. Brenda MacCulloch
    3. Hi all, apologies for any cross-postings but I wondered if sks could direct me to where I could find information regarding the the soldiers records and any passenger lists or ships the soldiers travelled on 'down under' of the District Chatham Barracks in Gillingham, Chatham, Kent England, .. I have a person in the 1841 census, occupation 'Soldier' living there - Gerald MURTAGH b. abt 1826 in Ireland. 1849 he is married (in the same district) to Harriet MAPEL and then went to New Zealand. I did read somewhere the great excitement regarding the new ruling that allowed a ratio of 12 wives per 100 Soldiers (as opposed to the old 'six wives' per hundred soldiers) when being posted abroad and it was about 1849 so that may have been the reason for marrying. Neither Gerald or his wife are in the English 1851 census and one of their children Thomas Henry MURTAGH was born in 1857 in Wellington, New Zealand. On his son's marriage details in Auckland NZ 1883, Gerald's occupation is given as 'Painter'. Any help or direction gratefully received. Kind regards, Brenda Hamilton, New Zealand

    2. Liz Quaid
    3. Hi Everyone A reminder that I co-ordinate a page called 'Historically Speaking' in the Ashburton Guardian which has an "Information Sought" column for those stuck on branches or looking for descendants in the Canterbury area; or for looking for information of an historical nature. The page runs now on the first and third Wednesday of each month. As from August 13 2007, we are now a morning paper, therefore the deadline for entries has had to change to the Friday before publication. A number of those who have submitted entries have had good success. If you would like to submit an entry, please contact me at reports@theguardian.co.nz While the emphasis for the page is mainly Mid Canterbury or the wider Canterbury area, we also have sections for 'Reunions/Anniversaries' and 'Book Reviews' which cover the entire country and from time to time run an "Out of Town" section for items of interest (suggestions always welcome). If you have an interesting Mid Canterbury ancestor that you would like to write about, please contact me and we can discuss details. There is no charge for any of these columns. Regards, Liz Quaid

    3. Hi Amanda I had a quick look at www.cityofdunedin.com and clicked on cemeteries (Andersons Bay). Found perhaps William (although there appears to be two Williams...........) and Maria Ann Read b 5/3/1868 Dunedin and died 19/3/1888. Buried at Greytown (Allenton) Cemetery. This may give you some sort of lead. Frederick Bickley READ has a WILL available at Archives NZ - Dunedin. This person is listed as a Blacksmith and could shed some light on other parts of the family. FB Read is really the only identifiable person with his two given names, one being the mothers maiden name. Also try www.archives.govt.nz and www.archway.archives.govt.nz. You could also contact the New Zealand Society of Genealogists branch at Dunedin as I suspect a member has an interest in this family. Details at www.genealogy.org.nz. 2. Peter Williams
    3. Hi all, I’d like to find out if Phil V WATSON is a member of this list– I had a brief exchange with Phil in 1998 via my CompuServe address regarding his interest in the surname MURCH in London and also Devon. My MURCH interests now intersect with the connection Phil had to Elizabeth Mary MURCH who married James Smyth STACY 25 Dec 1827 at Aldgate Church, City of London – Phil included that Elizabeth died 12 Jan 1869 in Adelaide, South Australia. Phil’s address at that time <pwatson@cwi.net.au> is now defunct (not surprising really) – the GRD CD I have (1990-1999) shows Phil was living in Puckapunyal in Victoria, The Hotmail address with the CD entry is also bouncing. I’ve checked Oz White Pages but can’t see anything for him there – well, there are of course quite a few P WATSON listings :-) I'd appreciate any help in locating Phil's whereabouts   Cheers, Peter Williams Lower Hutt New Zealand No virus found in this outgoing message.
