HBH 1892 Sept 14 BUCHANAN John Obit. Mr John BUCHANAN, at one time one of the best known figures in connection with Hawke's Bay Politics, died at a very early hour yesterday morning (between 1 o'clock and 2 o'clock) in his 73rd year. The deceased was among the very earliest settlers in the district. When he first came to the colonies he landed in New South Wales, where he stayed for a time. Owing to himself and wife being stuck up by bushrangers, which caused Mrs Buchanan to lose her reason, he came over to New Zealand. He settled in Hawke's Bay about the year 1855, and from that time until quite recently he took a very active interest in all the concerns of the province. He sat in the Hawke's Bay Provincial Council for several years, and at one time was Speaker of the Council. He unsuccessfully contested the Napier seat when the representation of the town was linked up with the court districts, but in 1881,, the town by that time being entitled to a member of its own, he was returned and sat in the House as member for Napier for three sessions. Recently Mr Buchanan suffered much in consequence of a tumor or similar growth upon the cranium, and for this he underwent an operation. Since that time he has been in very failing health, and the end came not unexpectedly, although suddenly. The funeral will take place this day, in the Napier cemetery.

I am searching MEYER, MOORE, BUTLER, and HOWARTH, some of the MEYER family (my direct line) moved to Australia in the 1920's. At the moment I am hoping to fine some info on my BUTLER's. Catherine Margaret BUTLER and Agnes BUTLER arrived in NZ on bord the WAITANGI which arrived in Auckland on the 20/11/1874. (there where also other Butlers on bord but I yet to work out if they are related) Catherine had twin boys in 1875 to Alfred Anthony MEYER, who she married in Auckland on 15/5/1876, They had 12 children one of which was Sydney Royden MEYER (my G Grandfather) I have no idea what happened to Agnes BUTLER and I would love to find out. Thanks Diane, That gives me a start with Agnes at least and thanks for the info on the CDs that could be a help too. I live in a tiny little town in Western Victoria that has less than 1000 people and we only have a very small library with a very limited genealogy section. The nearest town that would possibly have it is 100km away and with one child still to start school its not possible to go and search at the moment. Thanks again for the info its greatly appreciated Sam Vic, Aust -----Original Message----- From: australia-new-zealand-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:australia-new-zealand-bounces@rootsweb.com]On Behalf Of Diane Wilson Sent: Saturday, 13 October 2007 11:53 AM To: australia-new-zealand@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [AUSTRALIA-NEW-ZEALAND] New to the list Hi Sam I see you will have a lot of NZ research with all the lines you mention.
