    1. Re: [Australia-New-Zealand] DNA Testing in Australia and New Zealand
    2. Bob Mclaren
    3. Joe, The purpose of the DNA testing is to help in genealogical research. Your granddaughter could take two of the three DNA tests. She cannot take the Y-DNA test since this is a test on the male sex chromosome. She can take the autosomal DNA test (called Family Finder by Family Tree DNA) and the mtDNA test. The Family Finder test would show who matches her on any of her ancestral lines and goes back about five generations. The mtDNA is not a test on a chromosome, but on a small molecule of DNA. Hundreds of these molecules are in every cell. mtDNA is passed by a mother to all her children; the father does not pass his on. Therefore, mtDNA traces the maternal line and goes back many, many generations. The Y-DNA test is also valuable, but a male has to take that. So, her father or a brother would have to be the one to do the Y-DNA test. As the Clan MacLaren Genealogist, I encourage those who are interested in their genealogy to take DNA tests since this has proven to be a valuable tool. Let me know if you have any further questions. Yours aye, Bob -----Original Message----- From: AUSTRALIA-NEW-ZEALAND australia-new-zealand-bounces+bobmclaren=earthlink.net@rootsweb.com [mailto:australia-new-zealand-bounces+bobmclaren=earthlink.net@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Joe Thomas Sent: Saturday, February 04, 2017 5:35 AM To: australia-new-zealand@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [Australia-New-Zealand] DNA Testing in Australia and New Zealand Hello My granddaughter is a Wright, not sure if she is okay for the DNA history thing you are doing? 1. [Australia-New-Zealand] DNA Testing in Australia and New Zealand
    2. Bob Mclaren
    3. A number of men and women bearing one of the Clan MacLaren surnames (McLaren, Patterson, Lawson, Law, Low, Lowery, Laurie, Lawrence, McRory, McCrory, McIntyre/Wright, and many spelling variants) have settled in Australia and New Zealand over the years. At this time, there are 14 members of the Clan MacLaren DNA Project from Australia and 10 from New Zealand. I am reaching out in an effort to gain more members. DNA testing has proven to be a very valuable tool in our genealogy research. Two DNA tests in particular are worthwhile investigating. The first is a teat on the Y-chromosome, the male sex chromosome. This chromosome is passed by a father virtually unchanged except for a slow mutation rate. Therefore, if your Y-DNA results match another, you and he have a common paternal ancestor (provided a sufficient number of markers are tested). I have found that the optimum number of markers is 67. The second test is an autosomal DNA test. This is a test on the non-sex chromosomes. Unlike the Y-DNA test, this looks at all your ancestral lines; however, it is good only about five generations back. Here your matches will have a common ancestor with you on one of your ancestral lines. An estimated relationship is also provided in the test results. For men, the best combination would be to have both the 67-marker Y-DNA test and the autosomal DNA test (called Family Finder by Family Tree DNA - the company used by the Clan MacLaren DNA Project). For woman, the Family Finder test is very useful (plus getting a male relative with the surname of the of the names of Clan MacLaren). If you are ready to order a DNA test, go to <http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.aspx?code=T20437> http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.aspx?code=T20437 and place the order. Or if you have questions, contact me at bobmclaren@earthlink.net I will be happy to answer. Yours aye, Bob McLaren Genealogist, Clan MacLaren Society (based in Scotland) Chairman, Genealogy Committee, Clan MacLaren Society of North America Administrator, Clan MacLaren DNA Project (Worldwide) p.s. One famous McLaren from New Zealand is Bruce McLaren - the well known car designer and Formula 1 racer. If there is a male McLaren out there who is related to Bruce, please contact me about DNA testing.
